Could we add Overshadowed by Controversy here, seeing as how a great deal of people who heard of the comic only heard about it after learning of Chris-chan's IRL behavior?
Hide / Show RepliesSeconded. I literally only came across the series because of Linkara's "Top 15 comics I'll never review", where he mentions Chris-Chan (he only cited it as an example of a web comic people might try and get him to review because it didn't meet the qualifications of other web comics he mentioned). While it's true that there are people who read it, odds are that the majority of them heard about said comic because of how infamous Chris was, as opposed to discovering the comic first then finding out about him.
Third person to second this. Even before "the incident", she basically took the early internet by storm. I even have an idea on how it could be worded:
- Overshadowed by Controversy: Without getting into flamebait territory, Chris-Chan is among the most documented people on the internet. As soon as the trolls came into the picture, Chris's legacy became defined less by the comic, and more by the author's reactions to being trolled and other bizarre antics. She continued to have controversy after controversy heaped upon her, until a certain incident in 2021 involving her own mother landed her in prison. These days, jumping into Sonichu is likely to lead the reader into the rabbit hole that is the life of Christine Weston Chandler, and it's the main reason why the pages are locked to this day.
I think we can do without addressing Chris-Chan as a woman. Speaking as someone in the transgender community, he lives up to a few too many unfortunate misconceptions about the community...
Is Best Known for the Fanservice really an appropriate trope for anything to do with Chris-chan's work? I don't see anyone getting their jollies off to any of Chandler's attempts at erotic media.
Edited by CloverGoldngreen Hide / Show RepliesAgreed, it either should be reworded to actually describe that chapter is infamous for the attempted erotic content, or just be cut entirely if it can't be edited to actually describe the Fetish Retardant it induces.
chuck lorre vanity cardWe should probably add What Do You Mean, It's for Kids? onto this page. Despite the creator's claims that it's suitable for a TV-Y7 rating if it were a TV show, the comic has lots of content inappropriate for children such as graphic violence, nudity, sex, and foul language.
Edited by qthesimWhat's the point of not allowing hate on Sonichu? I know "we are not a wiki for bashing things", but Sonichu is just...objectively bad.
Okay, I'm like crazy late to this, but after learning Chris did something...appalling to her own mother, I'm a bit concerned where the Tropes page for Sonichu goes from there. Is this like Ren and Stimpy where they bring up John K.'s horrible acts, or is Sonichu's Tropes just gonna go silent? Not sure which one is better or worse.
I feel like at very least, a "Funny Aneurism" entry about Sonichu's incestuous lust for Christine in that one issue of Sonichu as it ties to... real-life events is certainly in order. Written as neutrally and honestly as possible, not to flame but to inform, of course.
Bumping this, to throw my two cents on what the trope pages might be done with. To reply to Toon Freak's comparison with the Ren & Stimpy page, this page warrants the mentions of the drama a lot more, considering at least R&S had a lot of talented people working on it unrelated to any of the fiascos John K did.
Meanwhile Sonichu as a work is pretty much impossible to separate from the author's actions, and given how much sympathy has been lost for her after the arrest, I vouch the controversial aspects of Sonichu's creator should be addressed in the page as to make sure people are informed.
chuck lorre vanity cardWe could bring up Chris Chan, but we need to understand the risk of vandalism. Chris attracts a lot of attention online, and among this attention are deranged fans trying to justify her behaviour or "weens" as in people who just try to be overly edgy by trashing Chris Chan. Both of these may fly to TV Tropes if this page starts acknowledging Sonichu's creator, even if Chris herself may never see it. The question is, would the people running this page be prepared for that?
Edited by ToonFreakOh yeah, I agree totally the page for this work is better up locked as to not attract vandalism, I actually forgot that was the original intent of the thread.
My two cents go more with keeping the pages locked, but have the pages written by moderators to acknowledge the controversies more, I think that's the best possible solution to prevent inflammatory trolls to her here.
From what I read in the wiki, seems that July 28 of present year is when the court case for the situation resumes, maybe depending on the verdict the pages can get edited by the mods here? This really is a difficult situation for this work page...
chuck lorre vanity cardWould it be appropriate to add Fetish Retardant to this page? There are grade schoolers that can draw better than Chandler. Yet that didn't stop him from including some graphic attempts at erotic scenes in his comic.
Should "Chris-Chan" (i.e. the fictional version of Chandler that exists within the comic) also be considered a trans woman?
By now, it should be clear to all except the most dense of us that sheep are secretly conspiring to kill us all and steal our pants.Should we add in YMMV that Togedemaru exists in Hilarious in Hindsight?
So, I know that there's a good reason why the YMMV page is locked, but I want to add an entry on Critical Research Failure - in "CWC's Love Quest Saga", while talking with a girl named Hanna, said girl mentions that she enjoys reading Chuck Palahniuk. However, it incorrectly states that Chuck is also the director of Fight Club; he was the author of Fight Club, not the director - something that you'd think Chris would know, since he has Hanna state that she enjoys reading Chuck Palahniuk's works, not watching them (if Chuck was a director, she would've said the latter).
Edited by RoarkTenjouinWe should probably add something on Estoretic Happy Ending (Chris murdering four people and being treated as a good thing) and Squick (all of Issue 8).
Hide / Show Replies- Esoteric Happy Ending: Chris and his allies stand triumphantly over their enemies and justice has been served to Simonla's murderers, but to do so, they've committed countless crimes, maimed or murdered hundreds in the process, engaged in a show trial, engaged in some of the most brutal atrocities in the name of revenge, and otherwise became far worse monsters than their enemies.
Is there a "cleanup" forum thread for Sonichu where these edit suggestions can be submitted?
