Feels like this page could use some pruning; every other example is either an author tract or trying to subtly argue with another example.

The Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies example, should that Pun in the example remain? I feel like it gives an unmistakable nod to an identity in the spoiler part of its example.

Hey I was just wondering what does this statemen mean "Hideo Kojima was in fact so appalled by fans misinterpreting Solid Snake as a character that a large part of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is dedicated to attacking fans who played the first MGS as a power fantasy." can yall elaborate a little more?

I went and pulled all the "crossdresser vs trans" examples, because Fanon Discontinuity is not Misaimed Fandom. In my experience, people interpreting crossdressers as trans know full well that the creator didn't intend them as trans because, to put it bluntly, the creators never intend them as trans.

... I said "all", but it turns out there were only two, and they both coincidentally had additional reasons to pull them unrelated to the above paragraph.

    examples
  • Fire Emblem Fates:
    • The below mentioned "crossdresser or trans?" debate came to the game with the appearance of Prince Forrest, a Wholesome Crossdresser and Action Fashionista who explicitely says he's a guy despite his girlish tastes in clothing and openly states that he's uncomfortable whenever he's mistaken as a girl. [snipped a bunch of links to personal tumblrs that were probably trying to export drama]
  • [This one is also a violation of Examples Are Not General] A handful of fans like to view cross dressing characters, primarily Naoto Shirogane and Chihiro Fujisaki, as good representations of Transsexual characters in fiction and some would even constantly insist they are Trans in canon despite Word of God remarking on how they are not. The issue here is that, while having head canons that they are Trans is perfectly fine, characters like Naoto and Chihiro were never intended or written to be Trans in canon. In fact, their characters and problems do not necessarily reflect the LGBT community in Japan in any way. Instead they were meant to be seen as representations of how strict and unfair gender roles and standards in Japan are. Like how a woman like Naoto wouldn't be taken seriously in a male dominated field in addition to being considered too young for her work. Or how a physically and emotionally frail male like Chihiro would be constantly shamed and bullied for being too weak for people's taste.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

  • Godot in the third game gets a lot of dislike for his blaming of Phoenix for Mia's death, with many citing how incredibly faulty his logic is. The thing is, that's the point. It's intentionally meant to be irrational, stupid and delusional and even Godot himself admits this later on. He was so distraught over Mia's death while he was in a coma that he desparately looked for someone, anyone, to blame for it. The whole thing was a coping mechanism born out of his depression. (Other aspects of his character are legitimately YMMV, but this one was intentional)

Let me get this straight. Godot was meant to be irrational stupid and delusional, and fans are misaimed for thinking he's irrational stupid and delusional? If fans hate him for traits that were meant to make him unlikable how is that Misaimed Fandom?

Ragarding Tharja in the FE: Awakening example:

"Word of God (that was unfortunately never officially translated) states that her Yandere traits were meant to be unsettling, and that choosing the player as the target of her Stalker with a Crush tendancies was specifically done to make them even more usettling."

This fandom has become infamous for deliberately spreading fake rumors and mistranslations, so I'm taking it out just in case. If anyone has links to a reliable translation of these supposed lines, they're welcome to add them and then put it back.

If she was intended to be sympathetic, this is not an example of Misaimed Fandom. Quite the opposite, actually.

I'm not so sure about the Tales of Vesperia example. The point the game seems to be trying to make (as the second point in the example alludes to) is that Yuri is a somewhat grey character whose actions can't be described as absolutely right or wrong. Right, okay, that's all well and good.

But (though I can only speak of my own experiences in fandom here, feel free to correct me), I have yet to see anyone describe him as evil, much less find it to be a widely held opinion. And even if that crowd does exist, those going the opposite way of glorifying his actions and acting like he's 100% right in everything are far, 'far' more common (particularly on this wiki, in fact).

Maybe someone who knows the fandom better than I do is better placed to comment, but the example as it is seems to paint exactly the opposite image of Misaimed Fandom on this topic than what I've actually seen in practice. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that this is a case of misaimed fandom in action rather than a description of it.
