Edited by 5.29.57.32 Hide / Show RepliesOi. There was a request not to add an image without starting a new Image Picking thread. I've rolled it back.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanApologies. Apparently my browser settings prevented me from locating an option to actually post the image in a picking thread as per the regulations (the image picking forum was displayed as noninteractive index).
This has now been rectified and the image is being submitted hopefully where people can actually see it.
It's not that bad, for the record.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman- Teen Titans Trouble In Tokyo: In the end of the film, Raven does this to Beast Boy after he made his last and somewhat awkward comment: "Okay, next time, we're going to Mexico!". She then coldly slaps him sensless off the stage, the camera fades after that, then the credits roll.
- This example isn't actually this trope. That slap was part of a Running Gag based on Boke and Tsukkomi Routine, a Japanese comedy routine where one guy habitually makes dumb comments and the smarter partner slaps him upside the head in punishment for his Incredibly Lame Pun.
I'm wondering if the "domestic violence" angle shouldn't be toned down a bit. I agree that female->male violence in general is more accepted than m->f, but this article seems to be implying that a woman seriously beating a man is more accepted than a man giving a woman a single slap out of anger - i.e. that ALL f-m violence is more accepted than ANY m-f.
I think the Double Standard is covered well in Would Not Hit a Girl, and while it deserves a mention here, as it is it comes across a little oversensitive.
Hide / Show RepliesI definitely agree. Another thing is that it's simply not true that manga/anime slaps are only female-male.
HodorDeleted the part about domestic violence. Come on, we're talking about a slap administered when one of the characters is very angry, not an ongoing violence issue. Never mind the fact that these slaps doesn't always involve domestic relationships.
It still has a huge focus on female-to-male though.
Edited by TsundeRay http://twitter.com/raydere | http://raydere.tumblr.comI changes the entry for Inu Yasha a bit. I don't think that Sango is someone who can deal out that kind of slaps to Miroku by default because, as the Action Girl and Big Guy, she actually is a physically strong woman, and definitely a match for Miroku. (Fine, he managed to defeat her in a battle, but I think we're supposed to see them as pretty much equally strong).
So, unlike Kagome, who would normally lack the agility to hit Inu Yasha or the strength to bruise him (even if it's just for one panel), Sango can be reasonably expected to be able to actually hurt guys.
Am I viewing this trope in a too narrow way?
Don't know about you, guys. But if I ever were to make an Anime, I'd subvert this trope.
Like, if the guy IS strong enough to stop her in a million ways before the slap connects, she WILL be stopped.
Not to mention that just like men who abuse women are normally portrayed as Complete Monsters, so will a woman that slaps a man. I'm 100% against Double Standards.(And I often believe I'm Earth's Only Sane Man)
Edited by CosmosAndChaos One of the over 40 party members from Chrono Cross. And a canon mother to celebrate the upcoming Mother's Day(05/12).As I've said before, the picture isn't an example of the trope, since Shinji is both normal and a wimp. A lot of people seem to have mistaken this trope for "regular slap".
Incidentally, this might have a basis in Real Life, at least from the standpoint of the observer. The Mythbusters recently * conducted a test using ice water to test various myths regarding pain tolerances. In their first test, using 25 women and 25 men, the average time that the women kept their hand in the water was about 20 seconds (only had a quick glance, it could be anywhere between 14 and 26) longer than the male average. They claim that this means that women have a higher pain tolerance than men. * At least this visible difference between the means discredits the Common Knowledge inherent in the assumptions behind the "comedic" nature of this trope.
Ketchum's corollary to Clarke's Third Law: Any sufficiently advanced tactic is indistinguishable from blind luck.
Per TRS, this is to be disambiguated Armor Piercing Slap between Bitch Slap, Megaton Punch, Armor-Piercing Attack, and possibly other tropes:
