How do you add new pages to Fan works? I want to add an Awesome, Heartwarming, and Tearjerker page for Traveler.

Apologies if this is wrong discussion to ask how to do this, but I wasn't sure where to go.

Should we add a page for fangames and ROM hacks (similar to the Skyrim Recommended Mods page)? Some are really good mods that add major quality of life improvements (like Sacred Gold/Storm Silver, Volt White/Blaze Black, Renegade Platinum), others add interesting challenges (such as pokemon randomizers, forced Nuzlocke rules, or the Kaizo series), while others add their own scenarios, regions, and stories.

I would like to recommend a fanfic.

Sacrifice and Subjugation By Metal Darkon

https://m.fanfiction.net/s/10471043/1/

Not just anyone can be the Champion. But what determines whether or not someone has the potential? How does one truly prepare? In a world fraught with danger both near and far, a boy pursues the answers to those questions. But the Pokemon League is a brutal institution, pushing trainers to their mental and physical limits. Only the strongest succeed.

This story is a more realistic take on the Pokemon world from the view of someone who wishes to be a trainer but is denied by there parents and the tragedy that allows them to follow there dream. This story has death, wonderful action scenes and a stirring plot that draws you in. Myself as a fanfic reader don't like OC characters but this character is well flushed out. There motivations are clear but the writing and the surprise plot twist that has been built up from the beginning is masterfully executed. If you are a fan of The Game of Champions or The Traveler you will enjoy this story. As of the time of this rec the S & S has 790 reviews of Fanfiction.net, the Author doesn't rapidly update. This story sits around 599K words and 43 chapters. Please give this interesting story a read!

You can't recommend your own fanfic. Other than that, I don't think there's rules aside from using the template and not deleting other people's recs unless they are not using the template or are in the wrong section (shipping stories in General, etc).

I am the only one who's earned that right! In the entire universe, I alone have the right to judge all humanity!

Hello.

I am a fanfic writter and Troper adept. After seeing the Pokémon fanfic part on TV tropes, I now want to suggest a fanfic I recently finished, Pokémon: The great adventure.

Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8330343/1/Pok%C3%A9mon-The-great-adventure

I don't know if it's wise of me to promote my own work, but people seem really fond of it and the sequel is even more popular. I admit I'll be a little sad if you refuse, but had the fanfic been of bad quality, I would have never promoted it. It's only the readers' opinion about it that made me give a try.

So ... please? (puppy eyes)

Long thing short, Ash meets a strange man who becomes his mentor and father figure and turn him in a total badass. Follows the series to a certain point and has Ash grow up, starting to ten.

Hi there!

Good on you for coming to the discussion page. Yes, fanfic authors are not allowed to list their own stories on Fanfic Recs, but if you want then you can create a wiki page for it at Fanfic.Pokemon The Great Adventure, which you can then link to as appropriate from around the wiki.

I personally can't recommend your fanfic since, well, I haven't read it, but someone else may come along, take pity on the puppy eyes, and do so.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

What's the protocol for a Fanfic Rec that has been removed from it's host site? Specifically I refer to Reluctance, under the General subpage, that was removed from F Fdotnet for reasons. I don't know of any mirrors, but if someone else does...?

plus some people keep fics on their hard drive, so if a fic is recced and someone goes looking for it they may run across a group who Keep Circulating The Fics.

However it does seem the first name reccing that fic is the author's. So that should be removed, no self promotion after all.

I deleted my recommendation for Farla's Pokémon Revolution. I read through it more closely and I found Eon to be one of the flattest villains I have ever seen. Not to mention the degree of Character Derailment was insane. And finally, the fact that Charles Rocket Boy and Farla have fairly different writing styles doesn't help.

If there are 5 votes supporting its removal OR no one comes to its defense after one week - whichever comes first - this fic will be deleted.

We seem to have an implied "keep" vote based on how someone has recently added their name to the "Recommended by" list.

Personally, I think it could stand to have a better recommendation writeup at the very least, particularly considering the number of comments that counter criticisms rather than actually support the work.

CrypticMirror Since: Jan, 2001

I support it staying because I like it and I recommend it. Under the No Such Thing As Notability rule, and after the huge fuss caused by a troper called Antvasima on the Ranma pages, it was established by Fast Eddie that all that is required for a fanfic rec to be present on a fanfic rec page is for one single troper to think it should be. In this case I am that troper. Trying to impose an objective measure of worth on fanfics is not something that is the business of this wiki, and trying to do so was part of what got Antvasima banned the first time (along with removing other people's recs).

As for the comments, well since the comments section is supposed to be replaced with a reviews link (see the template at the bottom of the Fan Fic Recommendations front page) that is a moot issue. Information on a fanfic rec page is supposed to be Fic name and author, recommender name, brief one or two line summary , any tags, and a link to a review page where reviews (if any since they are optional) may be left.

What thread is his word on? Can't find it.

EDIT: I searched this topic and the only reason I found for antvasima's ban was edit warring, not "trying to impose an objective measure of worth on fanfics". Besides, we work by consensus, and the site's MO is "the vote of the majority goes" from everything I saw. Either way, I PM'd Fast Eddie. If he does come by as I asked, let's see what he says.

EDIT 2: DialgaX, I'll ask you not to zap this fic until FE passes the word, even if the 5 votes are reached. Better safe than sorry.

No, the majority can often be wrong. Anyway, no published work can be excluded because it is not "important" in the eyes of any number of tropers.

If the work is available online, on screen, or on paper, it is published.

What's precedent ever done for us?
CrypticMirror Since: Jan, 2001
Apr 18th 2011 at 10:42:43 AM •••

that is what happened over in the Ranma page, Antvasima removed recc'd fics and wanted them to meet some sort of standard for "quality" stating that the Sturgeon's Law required it to achieve some sort of objectively scored status. This was found to be not the case, one troper thinks it is good enough to be recommended is all it takes to be recommended.

From the Fan Fic Recommendations main page:

"This is a list of recommendations made by Tropers for Fan Fics. Feel free to recommend your favorite fanfics here, but please follow the preferred template found below.

Bear in mind that recommendations are subjective, so if you want to question or discuss any given recommendation you should do so on the appropriate discussion page"

Nothing about any committee or group approval there.

I'll try to remember to start moving the page from the old format with formats into the current template with a link for people to give reviews sometime later this week.

I think we did have a thread on the fanfic recs discussion page that explained this but it got nuked because it turned nasty due to Antvasima accusing all sorts of people all sorts of things.

Is that going to work? I can't seem to find a method of converting comments into reviews in the "add review" section aside from each individual recommender doing it themselves. Using this strategy, my fic alone would require thirteen individual rereviews, and I'm not convinced all of the relevant people are still around.

REV6Pilot Since: Jan, 2011
Apr 18th 2011 at 11:57:12 AM •••

No you can't. The tropers themselves must place the review - it's bound to the handle.

Iaculus Since: May, 2010

The way we did it during the big conversion a while back was to take, say, Joe Bloggs's signed review from the comments section and add it to the reviews tab ourselves, titling it as 'Joe Bloggs's Review'.

See the recs page of Neon Genesis Evangelion for some good examples.

If you can't delete, why not have two lines, one for those who recommend and one for those who disrecommend? Anyone can add a fic, but readers looking for a story will be able to tell if a lot of people didn't like it.

CrypticMirror Since: Jan, 2001

addressed on main Fan Fic Recommendations page already with the final line above the recs index:

"If you want people to stay away from a fan fic, or read it for Bile Fascination or Snark Bait reasons, post it in SoBadItsGood.Fan Fic or Horrible.Fan Fic. If you want to read articles for other fanfics of varying quality, go to FanFic.Fan Fics."

So, no disrecommends allowed on the main page. Word of God right there.

icemew Since: Dec, 1969
Apr 18th 2011 at 3:20:52 PM •••

Huh. That's not the best setup. I assume it's to avoid the piles of warring edits here, but a disrecommends option would be pretty useful and probably cut down on that somewhat.

It does mention you can say if you like/dislike a fanfic in its reviews. Would it be possible to split up reviews into recommends/disrecommends format?

DialgaX Since: Jan, 2001

ArcVaranus Since: Dec, 2009
Apr 29th 2011 at 1:57:49 AM •••

Uh, Cryptic Mirror, I think you're taking Word of God a little too word for word there. I've always seen that line as meaning "if you find a fic tht's really awful and you want people to avoid it, post it in So Bad Its Good or Horrible, etc", not "If you find an already recc'd fic on this page and you think it should be avoided, talk about it somewhere else."

Even if someone likes a fic and reccs it, if someone disagrees with it's quality, they deserve to be heard too. Disrecommends made onto an already recc'd fic tend to induce natter, but at the same time often flag controversial fics so people are at least warned before they choose their timesink of choice.

Still, with the review system being set up, the situation should improve. This should clear up natter and give people a heads up about the quality of fics once it gets going.

I'm thinking of removing Sinners, by Slash Firestorm. There are many tropers that disagree with its self-proclaimed "quality" and, as said in the main page, the author doesn't accept feedback to make the story better.

I call this: if this idea gets approval by five or more tropers, the next one deletes the fic entry.

phazonfarmer has several other recommendations on the page, has a troping history, and has commented on the fic at Slash Firestorm's newgrounds site. I've also found other positive comments about the fanfic on FF.net... impressive, considering the fic is on the adult site equivalent.

ArcVaranus Since: Dec, 2009

I'd say axe it. As I was reading it I was somewhat entertained, but looking back, every single last one of your points against it is completely spot on, and now I can't even stand to look at it. The plot is one long epic wangst fest, the main character is dull and his characterization as he goes into the dark side makes no sense (and the presentation of him being 'between light and darkness' is just cliche), and the doomsday plot gets in the way of what should have been a study of how the advertised relationship would have worked. Not to mention the Anvillicious message of how good and pure the relationship is in contrast with how evil religion is. It's... it's basically pokeTwilight.

It is indeed 'slightly better than normal', but slightly isn't good enough. This thing is a Door Stopper, and if people are going to waste their time roaming these pages (like me) than there really should be better options around. Best of the best on these pages, I say, and this isn't one of it.

4 in favour, 1 against.

I'd lke to recommend two fics:

'An appple a day' by delongby

A story that involves 1 Psychic Trainer + 1 Criminal Mastermind + 1 Psychotic Killer + 1 Apple(mew) = 1 Great Story (in the hopes of the author)

Great storytelling, though a little mary-sueish at the begining.

'darkmask' by zaru

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6253583/1/bDarkmask_b_Johto_Chronicles#

the story of a vigilante that uses seriously brutal methods, and decides to travel with the local version of Lyra. Mild sex jokes at one of the two protagonists sexuallity though.

thanks for everyones time, read you latter.
