Now is time for a bad joke: In Rau mind, Screw you Al means Screw you All.

And the world was nearly destroyed by a pun. But hey, i like a game in where the world was destroyed by a pun.

So, I've been reading the Hellsing manga lately, and judging by the end-of-volume Author's Notes (AKA, Kohta Hirano hilariously rambling about assorted random shit), apparently he considers (or did consider) ZZ Roux Louka to be his waifu.

Hirano: "I wonder if Roux Louka would be willing to marry me..."

Were the Type 74 Hover Trucks really built for locales like the mountainous jungles of Southeast Asia in mind?

Probably not. They thus join the long tradition of military equipment being adapted to climates it was never intended for. (They probably weren't designed for the sonar system either.)

They're actually huge though when you look at them. The show wants you to believe they're like mobile suit foot sized, but...they have a minimum of four positions to man in there, (two drivers, a gunner, and the electronics guy) plus the room taken up by the electronics, plus two side doors that give you an idea of how big they're supposed to be in relation to a person. Interior shots from 08th MS show they still have room after all that for four or five more people, probably more; they're not long shots of the whole compartment, just from the electronics station in one direction and we don't know where that is. And then there's the aft cargo area.

The Type 74 is almost certainly bigger than a Stryker or a BTR-80.

I don't think I've ever seen the claim that the hovertrucks were developed for southeast Asia and/or jungle environments specifically. I know they've appeared in other places since their first appearance in 08th MS Team (the Crossfire PS 3 game has them in Australia as well, for instance, and implies that they're pretty much standard equipment for the EFF on Earth, where they're used as cargo convoy vehicles in addition to supporting MS operations).

Given the size and apparent flexibility of the chassis, I wouldn't be surprised if there were numerous specialist versions of the thing, from the forward mission support role we see in 08th MS Team, to pure cargo transport, to light anti-armor skirmisher, to mechanized infantry vehicle, etc etc. Of course, given its relatively recent retconning into existence, we haven't actually seen much of it, and it certainly appears to have been phased out after the One Year War — which makes sense, given the later conflict's lack of emphasis on conventional ground warfare on Earth (as opposed to small-scale raids and short-duration missions with specific objectives, rather than attempting to take and hold territory).

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

So my final thoughts on Zeta.

The Good:

  • HAMAN KARN!!!! It's really jarring that she's in the same series as Reccoa.
  • The fights are incredible.
  • The series manged to be very dark without going to the grimdark levels of Victory Gundam.
  • Jerid's is one of the best rival characters in the franchise. And like I said in my thoughts on the last two episodes, the manner of his death is brilliant.
  • Emma is awesome and I wish that more Gundam series would actually have competent female pilots who aren't Cyber Newtypes (or Cyber Newtype equivalents like Extended or whatever Ribbons turned Louise into) instead of that disgusting Stay In The Kitchen Crap.
  • The Zeta is one of my favorite Gundam designs.
  • Seeing Char as a protagonist was great, especially when you realize that he hasn't actually turned over a new leaf and is still a huge asshole.

The Bad:

  • The sexism. Holy shit the sexism.
  • Reccoa. I really don't have to say more.
  • Katz. It's amazing that I actually wound up hating him more than Reccoa. How could one character possibly be that much of The Load?!
  • On a related note, the Sarah arc is a huge Idiot Plot where everyone obsesses over her and fails to put any security on her the million times they capture her just because she flirted with Katz once. Not to mention that it's just a longer version of the Lalah arc from MSG.
  • Fa, particularly how Tomino uses her as a strawman to prove his point that women should Stay in the Kitchen. The saddest part is that there's a couple of fights where she actually does a decent job, which makes me sad at the wasted potential for another Action Girl.
  • Shinta and Qum.

The Nitpicks:

  • The Titans mecha designs were by and large unremarkable.
  • Four, Rosamia, and Sarah's deaths were so obviously telegraphed that it was hard to care about them, so their deaths had little emotional impact.
  • All of the "space is great" talk fell flat with me.
  • Scirocco is kind of a boring villain.

Overall: As a teen, Zeta was one of my favorite Gundam series. Watching it as an adult, I find that it is still good, but the sexism really drags it down.

I think that Turn A is now my favorite Tomino Gundam series, but overall I still like Zeta.

I like to think that Zeta started out with good intentions, got women in combat roles and in competent leadership etc.

And started out with all kinds of girlfriend and boyfriend character types like a checklist.

  • The attention seeker Reccoa,
  • the Patient Childhood Love Interest in Fa,
  • the girl who just can't see or do relationships in Emma,
  • the 'I am devoted to someone else' in Sarah,
  • the vengeful exgirlfriend in Haman,
  • The Waif in Four.
And on the guys side
  • the Angsty Teen in Kamille,
  • the dumb jock Jerid,
  • the boy who won't leave you the fuck alone and wishes to NTR you in Katz
  • the aloof guy in Quattro,
  • the Shojo Bastard Boyfriend who inexplicably gets all the ladies in Scirocco,
  • the lovable relationship klutz in Heiken.

And he decided to take a dump on all of them and make everything end badly for everyone especially the two survivors as you see in ZZ.

This line make me happy. [tup] Now is time to create a "tragic" (laughable) Shojo manga with Sarah like the protagonist.

[up][up]There is that too.

I don't know, I see a lot less one sided sexism in it than most people I guess. The show is terrible with everyone, the girls tended to be a lot more obvious.

[up] Don't forget the two timing with the attention seeker Reccoa and Katz the stalker who she was nice to once trying to NTR.

Yeah, Haman remains one of my favorite Gundam villains. She takes no shit from anyone and is usually in absolute control over whatever the situation happens to be.

While Shinta and Qum remain the most pointless characters in the history of pointless characters.

Tomino was in a relationship with one of the V As. Halfway through Zeta they had a messy breakup as she was stolen out from under him by another person on the staff.

Do the math.

Blast Impulse was only be used one more time in the entire show. For that matter you won't see Sword that much more either.

Like with the Strike they stick with the pack that gives it the standard Gundam armaments rather than anything fancy.

Apparently even the model kits gave Blast Impulse the short end. It's a crying shame.

AJSthe2nd Since: Jan, 2015
#13772: Oct 14th 2015 at 3:12:02 PM

That's because they couldn't get Blast Impulse into the 1/100 scale without it tipping over because the backpack and cannons aren't balanced right. That's why there wasn't a MG Blast Impulse.

It's not particularly surprising that Shinn didn't use Blast much — he's not much of a long-range combatant, and most of the big, slow targets that Blast would be useful against in the first place are equipped with positron shields.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.
AJSthe2nd Since: Jan, 2015

Shinn's problem with Blast is he used it against the Extendeds only, and ranged weapons are basically worthless against named characters in Seed because they actually know how to dodge and block. Even Kira in the powerful Freedom needs to use melee to down most non mook pilots (with one or two exceptions)

If Shinn used Blast when he was fighting the hordes and hordes of nameless Windam's coming at him he'd probably rack up quite a kill count with it.
