What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

...okay, so, I've known for years that the United Arab Emirates import a lot of sand, as a sort of funny "lol, desert countries need to import sand" trivia thing. But I didn't realize before now the actual reason. It's for cement, metal casting and other construction needs because of the massive boom in construction that's being going on, and desert sand is absolutely rubbish for that purpose.

The Roman city of Petra, located in modern-day Jordan, had a large, ahead-of-its-time pipe system, a series dams to control flood water(which are being rebuilt), and a luxurious swimming pool with a garden.

I know who Alan Tudyk is, bro. I knew him from Suburgatory, and then I found out he was in Firefly and A Knight's Tale. The voice acting thing is a recent gig for him that I'm surprised he's good at.

Somewhere in the United States of America, there is a woman who thinks mathematical equations are actually a terrorist code. Is it racist to be afraid of Arabic numerals?
