That was 12 years ago. doesn't seem to have really stopped toriko from being reasonably successful.

Halle-frigging-lujah. He can come back to the industry when he learns to actually direct.
Hopefully Matt Greenfield returns to Sentai's roster soon, their main full time directors at the moment could use a little less work.
Page isn't loading. Summary?
Steven Foster is leaving Sentai Filmworks. For context, he's a much disliked ADR director for many of Sentai's dubs. Not that I can really say much since I have yet to watch an actual Sentai dub.
YES!!!!
But apparenty, he was SO bad, he killed the URL link!
The comedy anime he's directed are decent to hilarious, but the serious stuff...not so much. Still kind of regret getting Kids on the Slope against my better judgment — two of the leads are perfectly capable of holding their own, but the third needed a pronunciation guide. "Kaoru" is NOT pronounced "Koar" (you gotta hear it to believe it)!

you can't be serious.
I think my decision to watch Madoka Magica in one sitting was a poor one, because it didn't let things sink in.
What do you mean, Glenn?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. So what else did this Steven Foster guy do?
Produce awful anime dubs. In today's era! Un-HEARD of! What are we?? The 90's!?
@ Marq FJA: I mean that there wasn't enough time for me to really feel the full emotional impact of the events of one episode, before the next episode's events happened.

I attributed that to wangsty writing used in place of actually developing or exploring the characters.
But then how come so many other people got incredible feels from it?
i think the majority of the characters were developed pretty well, honestly.
Because a lot of people just think angsty stuff is deep. Or instantly pity anything with a cute design.
Want me to hand you your hipster shades? Clearly you are the intellectual elitist here, o wise one. Please, shower those of us unworthy of your wisdom with the objective knowledge of subjective art
I've got new mythological machinery, and very handsome supernatural scenery. Goodfae: a mafia web serialBecause they resonated with it more than you? You not enjoying a piece of art as much as you feel you should've is not necessarily a failing on your part or the art's part. Sometimes we don't like things that are not bad. People often try to parse this into an objective failing of the work in question, but this is not always the case.
Well, I'm not parsing it as a failing of the work, but rather as a failing of the method how I approached it.
I'm sorry, but I only wear monocles. You've probably never heard of them.
If you want a more serious response, I could give you more reasons than that, but I think Madoka is mostly just okay rather than actually bad, so it doesn't really raise any desire in me to tear it apart. My response to GMH was mostly based in how Madoka spends too much time crapping all over its cast and not enough time giving me reasons to actually care about them.

@15415: Yeah, thanks. I meant what did he direct?
Well, the explanations I've thought of include:
- maybe I shouldn't have watched them all in a row? (what I said earlier)
- maybe I wasn't sufficiently experienced or enamored with the standard Magical Girl genre tropes for the deconstruction to hit me hard enough
- maybe I was spoiled that it would be a deconstruction or other "darker" take on the Magical Girl genre and thus saw it coming?
- maybe I should have listened to the original audio
- because it was better? (but the English dub didn't seem notably bad in any way)
- because it should have felt more distant? (i.e. not listening to someone in one's own language) (but wouldn't this hurt the possibility of getting feels)
The most similar other show I've seen is Uta∽Kata, but only its content is very broadly similar — its pacing is quite different, as is its premise. Also, oddly, I didn't get as much feel as I had hoped from a first viewing, but the show continued to haunt me a little bit for a long time to come (I still haven't figured out its meaning).
Regardless, the characters of Madoka Magica are definitely iconic and interesting. Just that while they're interesting to think about, I'm a little surprised I didn't feel more reaction to them.

The author got caught soliciting a minor. You can see how that might make Toriko a bit of a toxic property.
What's precedent ever done for us?
