Alright, confess odd things.

For example, I'm jealous to my big brother becuase he discovered The Smiths first. Dammit, now I can't have a crush for Morrisey without feeling weird about it.

Speaking of songs... I happen to like Linkin Park's lyrics, both because of how overwrought they are and because I genuinely find some parallels between it and some of the stuff that happens to me.

I like most of Florida Georgia Line's music. I can see how people would see them as the Nickelback of country, though (same producer, even).

I like videogames. I don't identify as a "gamer", It's just a hobby people!

I find ridiculous the idea of it being a culture.

And just to take it out of my system, the "wars" between PC and consoles, hating people that don't spend the same amount of time when playing games ("Filthy Casual Gamers"), and expecting anyone that plays videogames to have played the classics (A moviegoer automatically knows nothing about films if he hasn't seen Citizen Kane, right?) gives you an idea of how much I love the average "Hardcore Gamer".

Some hardcore film buffs would say so, yes, actually.

What is it about Citizen Kane that makes people unitedly not like it?

They probably think too hard about its reputation and end up underwhelmed, rather than attempting to understand the story or, y'know, the groundbreaking cinematography and why that was so groundbreaking.

It's a case of Hype Backlash, which is another trope I hate.

To add to what Odd1 said - one reason so many cinema buffs like it is because of what ground it broke, and how it proved some techniques could work.

Unfortunately, most don't think of it for that reason. It's much like Birth of a Nation that way - most people focus on its reaction than anything else. Yes, there's a reason those reactions happen, but if you can get over them and enjoy the films cinematography and visual effects, you will understand where lots of modern films took influence for their own effects from.

The same thing applies to 2001: A Space Odyssey, like where at the end it sidesteps the use of montages and manages something brilliant - but people keep raving about it and it ruins it for most people.

I thought people didn't like Birth of a Nation because of the Ku Klux Klan.

(Re: Citizen Kane) I personally just didn't find the story very interesting, the satire was too dated for it to be funny to me, and I'm so used to watching Hitchcock films that the cinematography wasn't so special (a very rare case of Seinfeld Is Unfunny for me). Then again, I found the cinematography in Triumph of the Will to be rather interesting and that was made before Citizen Kane so who knows if that was really the case for me or not.

Which is exactly what I said. It is unapologetically racist, bu if you can get beyond that and see the techniques used, you'll appreciate where lots of modern cinema gets its tropes from.

Hell, Continuity Editing was something Griffith basically introduced to cinema.

Another thing about Citizen Kane: although it broke new ground, a film doing something first does not mean it's done it best.

They do have medals for almost, and they're called silver!

It's not so much about doing it first as it is doing it first in a successful way in the public eye.

When writing female characters in my stories, I do not think of whether or not they pass the Bechdel Test.

I don't think of it consciously, but like, my stories usually have a lot of female characters anyway so I just figure I'll pass it without trying in most cases.

Which reminds me, I really do need to write more. Confession: I'm one of "those guys." Y'know, the kind that calls themself a writer but hardly ever actually writes.

My stories often don't. But that's cause they're tight-focus male slash fic.

I tend to overthink if a character trait could be consireded sexist so I usually end up with a lot of female characters. Then I overthink wether making so few male characters is sexist (Would it be sexist with the genders flipped? I personally don't think so) but then I remember I am a man so I can decide if something is misandrist (Or maybe I can't?) and I finally just get over it and continue writingnote .

And that's why my stories don't usually pass the reverse Bechdel Test.

I have various fictional crushes — but none on people IRL.

And then my fictional crushes consist of me wanting to hug/squeeze the other person, and not even kiss them or do anything beyond that.

I guess you could say I fall for characters solely based on personality. (If they're good looking it doesn't hurt, but I'll love average looking characters with a good heart over a bishounen jerk any day.)

I find it very awkward and weird and so far from the norm.
