Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous Post
Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Sorry, I got overeager sadsadsad FYI, I compared the VG page to the Film page, and Film still has WAY more. But if it's any with 3 or more, should we have subpages for Call of Duty and Zone of the Enders?

What IS the character limit anyway?

Tv Rulez, a [tup] to all those proposals.

And I take my talking to and don't do it again and again apologize.

The character limit is 400,000. If you scroll down to the bottom left of a page, you'll see 2 sets of numbers. I don't know what the bottom number means, but the top number is the current numbers of characters on the page.

The smallest of those subpages can still fit both Blizzard and Bioware and have room to spare.

[up][up]Fascinating; I never knew that. Looks like even with the subpages merged we still have plenty of room, but eff it, if I'm the only one who wants fewer subpages it's not an argument I'm gonna win, so whatever. Some battles aren't worth fighting. Sorry again sad

[nja]BTW, I've started the TV Sandbox.

Shaoken's.

Ok, I think we just need to repair the damage and swap out the rewrites and Video Games is done. All agree? Any thoughts?

[up][tup] My only thing is maybe going through the examples and seeing which ones need to be unspoilered (and maybe picking an image, but that's optional). If you wanna delete them from the current page now before the swapping, or just re-add them, whatever.

[nja]And sorry again.
BTW, I'm reading Darth Plagueis...geeze Palpatine.

[nja][nja]So now on to TV; what's the progress of Kamen Rider, Power Rangers, and Super Sentai?

I would posthumously support the merger of the subpages, only because we've been applying a fairly low split treshold by wiki standards and that doesn't strike me as a good idea with this trope in particular (more pages to deal with, the risk that people will view a subpage as some kind of "badge of honour" for a work, encouraging misuse etc.).

[up]People are already treating this trope like a badge of honour, and we can simply get mods to hit people with the mod stick if they create subpages.

Plus the best advantage we found of them is we can put "has it's own subpage" and cut out any attempts to add new examples to work pages.

[up][up]Ah good, I'm not alone, even though I acted hastily (sorry again; can I stop apologizing now? tongue ).
Anyway, I'll go through Kamen Rider Monsters, Power Rangers Monsters, and Super Sentai Monsters today and check grammar and such.

[nja]Fortunately, I won't be tempted to merge with TV (though a couple MAY need subpages if all the ecamples stand).

[nja][nja]Actually (and this is the last time I'll bring this up; if I'm voted down so be it), should we just remove the subpages from Video Games And Visual Novels instead?

PPS: I went through Power Rangers, and if no more edits are needed, it's probably good to go. As for Kamen and Sentai, I worked on the grammar and got rid of Word Cruft, but some work still needs to be done (especially Kamen; Sensei doesn't seem quite heinous enough and Rook it says has a Heel–Face Turn).

Rook's 'Heel Face turn' was just boredom. Not sure it counts. I think we just need Sanfran to post the rewrites and the page is good. Power rangers need a compression for Xandred and it's good.

There's nothing to suggest that he was ordered to do that. His boss didn't seem to be in direct contact with him, and you never see them talking to each other.

Okay, for Elementary, either Moriarty has to go, or this from the character page has to go:

Personally, she truly did fall in love with Holmes. It's also revealed that she has a daughter who she cared enough about to escape from prison in order to save.
Plus there's the whole Worthy Opponent thing.

Alright, I worked on TV; there are a LOT of entries needing expansion and a few which may be able to be condensed, so I'm gonna take a little break until some of those are resolved.

[nja]I Lied tongue; a quick question:

The Good Wife had a rare non-murderous example of a Complete Monster in TV talk show host Duke Roscoe. A Glenn Beck-esque political shock jock, he accused a woman whose child had been kidnapped of murdering her, hounded her until she committed suicide, and then mocked her grieving husband to his face while continuing to insist that the dead woman was a murderer. When the network was sued for libel, he threatened to quit if they settled, and went on the attack against the opposing attorneys. And then CONTINUED to attempt to defame them after the child he accused the woman of murdering was found alive, kidnapped by strangers. This story was Ripped from the Headlines based on an incident with Nancy Grace.
Seems like an utter Jerkass (and don't get me STARTED on Nancy Grace), and may even meet the heinous standards of the setting (though since a character recently got shot and killed...), but doesn't seem to meet the GENERAL heinous standards.

Yes, that should be cut. I'll let Ambar field the Moriarity one.

Did we get the subpages back yet?

And from past requests, here are some writeups/fixed writeups:

The Teen Wolf entries now that the season's done:

  • Jennifer Bake killed twelve innocent people in cold blood for power. She tried to kill Danny just because he had info that might endanger her, not to mention setting up Psychic-Assisted Suicide on four traumatized teenagers including the main character. Boyd died partially because she insisted on maintaining her facade. She never shows the slightest remorse, but keeps on pathologically justifying herself. When Chris Argent confronts her on her murders she smiles and says that they are 'sacrifices'. For all her eloquent speeches that she needs to stop the Alpha Pack for the good of many she never interferes when they hurt people. She is out for revenge and her own interests and would stop at nothing to achieve it.
  • The Nogitsune possessing Stiles, mentally and emotionally torments him, forces him to torture his friends, and go on constant murder sprees. In its first murder spree, it was summoned by Kira's mother at an internment camp to avenge her American lover, but instead massacres the internment camp, prisoners and guard's alike, before finally being subdued. In the present, he takes control of the Oni and one of the first things he does is kill a girl named Allison. He later leads the Oni on a massacre at the local hospital and police station. In the final showdown, he plans on having Scott kill Stiles, citing it as the only way he can be defeated. And why? Simply for fun: it sees it all as a game.

  • Mary Lou Maloney was just an Alpha Bitch in life in the Prom Night films, manipulating boys to her own ends. When she used two boys to become prom queen, one of them, Billy, decides to retaliate with a prank, but Mary gets killed in a freak accident. Thirty years later, her spirit awakens when a girl named Jess takes a gem out of her crown, and as a result gets killed by Mary's spirit. She later torments the main character Jess's best friend Vicki Carpenter with Hellish hallucinations before possessing her. She later kills the local priest, Buddy (also one of her old prom dates), telling him there is no God or Heaven to torture him. As it turns out Vicki was dating Billy's son Craig, and Billy was the new principal, she uses this to plan to get revenge on Billy through his son and taunts him about it. Later she kills Vicki's other friend for Monica for suspecting something is going on with Vicki. While getting ready for prom, she tries to seduce Vicki's father and kills her mother. At the prom, Mary cheats the vote by killing a boy named Josh, who's running the prom votes. Billy is forced to shoot Vicki but that just gives Mary physical form. In the rampage that follows, Mary opens a portal to the underworld and attempts to drag Craig down with her. In the next film, after escaping hell, she kills a janitor who was one of her ex boyfriends. She seduces a teenage boy named Alexander, who already has a girlfriend, and kills a teacher for giving Alexander bad grades, and puts a strain on his relationship with Sarah, and kills a guidance counselor for being suspicious. Mary later kills Ale's rival Andrew, which prompts Alex to reject Mary. In retaliation, she kills his best friend Shane and frames him. When Alex rejects Mary again, she plans to kill Sarah at the prom. When Alex rushes to save her, Mary agrees to spare her, if he goes to hell with her and be her prom king for eternity. When Sarah seemingly manages to rescue Alex, Mary gives them both a false Hope Spot before killing Sarah.

  • Claude from An American Werewolf in Paris is the leader of a gang of Social Darwinist werewolves and owner of the Club de la Luna. Claude made himself a werewolf by stealing the blood of the benevolent werewolf Serafina. Upon doing this, Claude uses his club to lure tourists and thrill seekers in before he and his pack transform and massacre them all. Claude uses his club to lure people to their deaths. When the hero, Andy, is bitten during a visit to the club, Claude tries to get Andy to join the Pack by forcing him to murder his friend Chris. When Claude learns Serafina's scientist father is working on a cure that ended up causing immediate transformation, he raids his lab to murder him and steal it to transform whenever he wants to kill innocent people.

I'm requesting it, and I'll request all new additions and rewrite swaps by tonight if nobody sees anything.

Let's finish Xandred and Power rangers is done.

Anyways, ACW, don't make any more unilateral decisions on subpages. if there's a subpage already there with 3 or more entries and it's a single work or franchise, leave it. Let's merge Blizzard entertainment and Bioware back to the main page...I think we oughta do the same with Go Nagai to be frank.

[nja]And if the pages can't be restored, we can just cut and paste from the Sandbox.

Say, there's another anime character I want to discuss, mostly because I want opinions on if this guy's too minor to qualify.

The character is an unnamed Mad Scientist who appears in a single chapter of Zatch Bell!, functioning as a one-man Freudian Excuse for sympathetic villain Dufort. Dufort has the psychic ability to know the answer to any question, but only when he's angry, so this guy took him in to research the abilities. He'd give Dufort pets to play with for the sole purpose of eventually killing them to trigger his abilities, made him watch as he tore up letters from his family, and it's implied he murdered the kind nurse who was the only person at the facility Dufort liked. Through all this, Dufort cooperated with the scientist, as he told him that his powers were being used to find answers to the world's greatest problems. On his last day there, however, the scientist, smugly smirking all the while, tells him it was all a lie: the research was actually to develop Weapons of Mass Destruction, his family never loved him, and, oh yeah, the facility is at the north pole, and he's being released just so he can freeze to death.

This guy is easily the worst human in the series, but is he onscreen enough to qualify?
