During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. " to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

No objections to Ragyo. Sounds like she'd be at home in Berserk, which is my measuring stick for depravity.
Why are we talking about Osborn again? Norman was qualified a long time ago.
He did something new in a comic this week, namely infecting Doc Ock's fianceé with AIDS.

The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."I think we were discussing adding more crimes to Norman Osborn's rap sheets, apparently he has done more terrible things in his latest appearance.

Interesting. Ragyo gets a for being able to intrigue me since Vandal Savage.
To me, it's kind of funny how at /co/, people tried to pair Ragyo up with Ozai as some step-mother by virtue of her child abuse. Never knew she had such ambition.

...is that a hentai? She seems to do a lot of groping and molesting. If so it shouldn't be on here, period.
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."no, it isn't. Not at all.
Yeah, unlike a hentai, the show at least has a plot. Sure it has a lot of fanservice in it, but it has a plot.
basically Kill La Kill is an over the top parody of fanservice shows, while being a very over the top action series.
It has a lot of nudity and sensuality, but it's nowhere near a hentai (we never see any nipples, for starters)
Plus, it's not meant to be titillating at a lot of points, even if they don't draw nipples where they clearly should have been drawn.

I know, I was just making a joke with comparing the show to a hentai. Normally a hentai is just pointless fanservice with a nonexistent plot.
for Ragyo. This one is like the ultimate no brainer.
And before she's brought back up, for Nui. Her moral agency and deeds are all tied to Ragyo, who obliterates her in terms of heinousness.
On Nui, there is the fact that she is simply Ax-Crazy. That's all I saw her as. There's also the fact that she keeps rather hard grudges, and there's also the fact that she was trying to kill Ryuko because she was still pissed off about her father cutting her eye out prior to the main show. I'd probably let Sanfran explain her more because I haven't really gotten around to watching the show, only clips.
Is that an argument for or against her inclusion?
What I mean is, PM Sanfran. She knows more about the show than I do.
I know enough about the characters to know that Nui doesn't hold a candle to Ragyo, therefore she cannot qualify.
Nui's literally Ragyo's tool too, and she apparently doesn't have Moral Agency since she was literally born that way too.
One Life to Live has badly written examples
- Complete Monster: Mitch Laurence. Not only is he a murderer and a rapist, but he also recently he returned from the dead, hired two men (one her brother-in-law) to stalk his daughter and make her think her dead husband was back from the dead, then proceeded to lure her to his old home in Napa, where she found his corpse sitting there in a chair while his corpse was discovered to have disappeared from its casket back in Llanview. If the rape and murdering weren't his Moral Event Horizon, this definitely was.
- Adding to that, Mitch followed that with planning to kidnap his unborn grandchild, kill its mother, and have his daughter Jessica raise it. When he found out the baby wasn't actually his grandchild, he threw its mother out in the cold, and decided the only way to get another possible heir for his creepy cult was to rape Jessica—his own daughter (or so we thought)—in the hopes she would conceive an heir. Talk about messed up.
- Another one is Victor Lord, who was revealed to be a pedophile who molested his own daughter, Vicki after his first and presumed death, hence how she got multiple personality disorder. After he came Back from the Dead after The Reveal that he molested his daughter, he tried to have her heart transplanted into his failing one so he could continue his miserable existence.
- It could even be argued that Victor Lord Jr was worse than Todd Manning, because while Todd was flamboyant in his evil doings, Victor was more subtle about it, making his moments of villainy more impactful.
Sounds like Mitch Laurence counts but needs a rewrite
Also, if I have the time, I'll try and listen to Oliver Twist on You Tube to refresh my memory on Sikes.
I have done some research into the Controller and I think he could count, there is one story where he is really nasty, I am going to do a full proposal on him:
Who is the Controller?
The Controller is an Iron Man foe who's real name is Basil Sandhurst, he started out as an electro-mechanical/chemical research scientist who was prone to fits of rage, which got him banned from most research labs. His Amoral Attorney brother Vincent managed to get him hired as a scientist at Cord Industries, where he threw another fit that caused an explosion that crippled him. Vincent racked with guilt, set up a research lab for his brother. Basil used this lab to recreate an exoskeleton that allowed him to walk again, however Basil invented another more sinister device, the slave disc, a Mind-Control Device that allows him to control people's minds. The slave discs steal people's mental energy, a few mind controlled puppets allow him to walk, several more grant him super strength. Basil soon developed even more of an megalomaniac complex and a belief that he was the only one entitled to free will, that others exist to be his slaves.
What does he do?
All sorts of bad things. His basic M.O is to use his slave discs to control as many people as possible to increase his own power base and grant himself super strength. One of his first acts as the Controller was to enslave his own brother, despite his brother's generosity, so he is a pretty evil villain even back in the Silver Age. Controller often kidnaps or tricks random civilians into becoming his slaves, he once started kidnapped a bunch of random people in a town in Texas, stealing people from their families just to gain more power for himself. He is also prone to acts of petty cruelty, he once forced man to kill a woman who refused to date him back in High School and the man who he forced to commit this murder killed himself, with Controller not caring one bit. Controller also has set up gladiatorial games when he is bored, forcing some of his mind controlled slaves to fight to death, with an audience of slaves clapping at this gruesome display. He also enslaved a mutant girl named Sarah Jessup, a psychic who increased Controller's mind control powers, Controller's mind control process eventually drove her insane, causing her to become an unstable super villain and she eventually died.
Any Freudian Excuse, redeeming qualities, or other mitigating factors?
The only Freudian Excuse he has is his disability and that is not even close to justifying anything he does and frankly he was bad person before became disabled, if he was just interested in walking and used his discs just to control enough people to power his suit, he might be sympathetic. But that's not who he is, he wants power and dominion over other people. Despite his brother's kindness towards him, Controller was more then willing to him a slave and he worked for Thanos, in exchange for his help, Controller wanted Thanos to make him ruler of the Earth, so he willing to betray the entire human race to further his own quest for power.
How does he match up by the standards of the setting?
He seems particularly evil for an Iron Man villains, his attitude and acts of cruelty seems far beyond those of an average Iron Man villain. He may engage in generic super villainy at times to further his goals, but his whole M.O is pretty evil, enslaving innocent people to further his own ends.
Verdict
I think he counts, he is pretty evil with no redeeming qualities.
the more I research him, the more I'm convinced he counts, really.
I'd also like to do a rewrite for Sir John Talbot from The Wolf Man 2010. The current is a Zero Context Example and all.
Here it is:
- Sir John Talbot of The Wolf Man 2010 is a literal and figurative monster. Cursed with lycanthropy decades before the film, Sir John murdered his wife accidentally and allowed his young son Lawrence to be sent to an asylum to have the memory of the werewolf tortured out of him. When Lawrence's brother was going to leave the Talbot home, John didn't lock himself up on the full moon with the express intent of transforming and tearing his son apart. He allows himself to transform outside his cage shortly after, killing many innocent people and infecting the returned Lawrence. He allows Lawrence to transform and go on a killing rampage so he'll be blamed for the killings and be sent back to the asylum for more torture and insanity. Sir John had given his Indian manservant Singh a gun with silver shells to stop him should he ever lose control, but upon Lawrence's return to the manor to settle things with his father, he finds Singh's butchered corpse and John gleefully informing him he'd removed the powder from the shells years ago. Seeing his curse as power, John Talbot believes that he is the superior species and can do whatever he wants to anyone, even his own sons who he views as nothing more than possessions.
I was told the Kore writeup had grammar issues. Is this any better.
