I like how the movie looks decent (visually, at least) in the beginning, and then near the end they're using animated gifs for the explosions.

Y'see, I thought the problem was it tried to be a serious cyperpunk style rebellion movie about sonic the hedgehog.

[up] My point exactly.

I mean come on people, you keep trying to force Sonic to be Metal Gear or Final Fantasy, when this is a series about a CARTOON HEDGEHOG.

Fuck this shit.

Oh, definitely. That goes without saying.

I don't think we had to comment on that idiocy. Considering I noticed some mentions of SATAM in the credits, I'm assuming that he was trying to make a dark movie version of SATAM or something.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news for Sonic fans but...SATAM...was OK. It's not bad. It's just not good enough to warrant this worship.

SATAM did at least have some humour such as Antoine.

This is trying too hard to be Archie mixed with the dark ages of Marvel and DC.

I actually don't think it's impossible to have a serious story being told starring furries or fluffy animals or anything, and still be able to pull it off. Sonic 3 & Knuckles's plot was fairly serious (Eggman wrecking some serious shit and betraying everyone in his attempts to get the Death Egg back up into space), if admittedly a bit thin and told almost entirely through pantomime, but it was handled incredibly well.

There are definitely lines that shouldn't be crossed, though. Sonic Adventure 2 takes itself too seriously, turning into some kind of sci-fi "epic" with angsty anti heroes, stellar objects exploding, corrupt governments, conspiracies galore and threats of mass extinction - it's so heavy-handed that it doesn't feel like a good fit for the Sonic series. Shadow the Hedgehog then ratchets that up considerably (guns! You use guns in a Sonic game! Not even laser guns or boxing glove guns - actual guns which shoot lead bullets!) and adds aliens into the mix... and despite trying its hardest to demand it be taken seriously, I seriously just can't, it's so stupid.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) takes the cake, however. It probably could've worked alright with just a "save the princess" plot (ignoring the obvious interspecies squickiness, and that the dumb woman gets captured and rescued a good five timesnote ), but it just had to insert in Mephiles/Iblis/Solaris because they have a fetish for Giant Space Fleas for final bosses. Iblis just kinda is, and doesn't really do a damn lot in the plot (except act as Silver's motivation for the plot, and randomly pad out Sonic's and Shadow's stories with a meaningless boss fight). Mephiles is the worst, though; he tries to lecture Shadow on philosophy and how mankind will turn on him and hate him and capture him over Iblis's reign of terror (for... some reason), ignoring that in his own game Shadow'd moved past this kind of bullshit so bringing it back up in an attempt to be heavy-handed falls utterly flat in every conceivable fashion... Also, Mephiles tricks Silver into going back in time to give Eggman time to capture Elise two more times kill Sonic and make Elise cry so she releases Iblis and he can rejoin with him and become Solaris again, ignoring that he can go back in time and do it his own damn self (and ultimately does in the Last Story, making Silver's inclusion into the plot even more meaningless and Mephiles's plan here absolutely braindead). Seriously, this plot was absolutely idiotic, so it's a damn good thing it erased itself from the timeline; we can safely ignore everything that happened in it, and we're all better off for it.

(Actually, I wonder if the cutscenes from the game, trimmed into a movie of sorts, would make a good Metroid: Other M-style Wrongpurae; there's so much wrong with this game, and I always get a kick out of people mocking it.)

I think Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations actually did it a lot better; Eggman's a serious threat again, but the game isn't wallowing in its own self-importance and remembers how to have a fun time, to balance it all out.

[up]Thing is, Sonic 3 And Knuckles' story is told solely through the gameplay and short, dialogue-free cut scenes. Really, it's easy to ignore the story if you aren't looking for it.

I mean come on people, you keep trying to force Sonic to be Metal Gear or Final Fantasy
Don't laugh, someone in the Sonic thread in the Video Games subforum actually thinks a Sonic game done like Metal Gear Solid is a great idea and brings it up at every opportunity.

I don't normally have much time for gaming in general, so you can imagine that the MGS games aren't exactly on the top of my list of things to play due to just how time-consuming they are and how much effort and memory they require.
