The "The Trope" cleanup

I like it.

I've seen these for Mario: The Legendary Hero and The Everyman. The Superstar of the Mushroom Kingdom. The Stomper of Foes. Average, yet versatile in every sense of the word. Nintendo's biggest Mascot, Fun Personified, and at one point more iconic than goddamn Mickey Mouse.

Princess Peach: The Damsel in Distress (that is, unless she's not).

and Bowser:

The Evil Overlord. The self-proclaimed king of awesome. The mighty tyrant who inspired so many more to follow his stead. The only villain who can go on go-kart races with his nemesis and get away with it. The biggest, baddest reptile of all, and he'll let no one forget it.

Behold! The King of the Koopas!

I'd purge all of them but that's just my opinion.

Well, for Mario, he is the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom and his Jack of All Stats nature is very well known (the trope used to be "The Mario" after all), Peach...eh, I'm pretty sure there are other Damsel in Distresses that are as well known as her and Bowser, I'd chop it down massively

Mario's might be onto something if only because I think the general public will think of Mario if asked to name a video game hero. If not him, then someone like Sonic or Link. And admittedly this is assuming the general public don't care about games beyond Pop-Cultural Osmosis.

So, what should we do?

I mean, I'm fine with cutting it, I just think that if we want to keep any of them Mario's is the one that has the most merit.

Mario's introduction reads to me like it's saying he exemplifies the tropes The Hero and The Everyman, both of which legitimately begin with "the", not that it's touting him as the greatest example of the tropes. So, no issue there.

As a rule of thumb, the problematic cases are where "the" is in italics, especially if it's bold italics, even more so if it's potholed to Trope Codifier.

I'd be happy to nuke all of those on sight. At this point, do we have consensus for that?

Yeah, I'd agree with purging them. Mario and Luigi's combined section and Peach's section of her page talk about their well known examples. Also, is Peach the Trope Codifier for Damsel in Distress?

Not at all; Peach is just an infamous example of one.

I got rid of the Trope Codifier on the Damsel in Distress section on Peach's folder and we should just purge the others as well.

I've also done this before for Mr. Krabs: "The Penny-Pinching Crab." Remove?

Also, are there any objections to what I wrote up for the Doctor on this thread's previous page?

Argh. Mr. Krabs I not be too sure about. He be the picture on the page, the dialogue exchange and the video clip which also say he be the Trope Codifier. But, Transformers had The Transforming Mecha removed and the first sentence turned into a pothole to Transforming Mecha. So, go ahead. Arrr arrr arrr arrr!

I saw this on Characters.Sailor Moon Usagi Tsukino: The Shoujo heroine. The Magical Girl Warrior. Fights evil by moonlight. Wins love by daylight. Never runs from a real fight. She is the one named Sailor Moon.

Any thoughts on what to do here?

Princess Peach is all good. I would recommend deleting from Usagi's page because like Peach, she's a well known example, but not THE example. For instance, Sakura from Card Captor Sakura is pretty well known, too.

Is it OK if I let Backstroke of the West remain described as "The Translation Train Wreck"? Because I can't think of anything else as hilariously mangled as it.

I'd say Pokémon Vietnamese Crystal and Zero Wing's English translation are pretty well known too (Someone set us up the bomb!)

Yeah, delete. Zero Wing was doing memes long before Backstroke of the West.

I found this on Disney's Snow White characters entry: The Disney Princess. Actually, Walt Disney himself preferred Cinderella and Snow White's not really that well-known.

I mean, Snow White was the first. And by what metric are you assuming her popularity?

• shrug* I mean, there's the 7D which exclusively stars the Seven Dwarfs and Snow White doesn't get up to much in Kingdom Hearts and had like one line in Once Upon a Studio.
