I don't think "character makes a sarcastic comment" is a trope on its own. That's what most people think Deadpan Snarker is, and it has a pending TRS thread.

I agree with the sentiment that they're mainly for potholing on the forums.

I mean, I guess they probably are, it's just weird that they're in Main and stuff then but that does make potholing easier...eh...yeah, I was wrong about them being treated like tropes.

Sarcasm Mode as written in the trope description isn't just sarcasm even if most people use it that way.

Its when people use indicators for sarcasm like how some comics would italicize or bold sarcasm.

I think its weird it doesnt collect in universe examples but that probably needs to be discussed else where

Yeah those would be related the description also lists inflections and using stock phases in spoken word or audio to indicate sarcasm.

In theory one can say that potholing to Sarcasm Mode is also a form of Sarcasm Mode in the sense of "sarcasm marker", with the pothole being the marker. I am not sure if these potholes should be considered legit, though.

Given that anyone who can't see the link target (most obviously mobile users) can't see that it's sarcasm...

There is a Short-Term Projects thread open to discuss what should be done with the Up To Eleven sinkholes, especially considering that there are over 27000 of them and they reflect incorrect usage (as a synonym for Exaggerated Trope).

YMMV.ET The Extra Terrestrial (particularly the part about the infamous Atari 2600 game) has these sorts of entries (sinkhole chain is in bold):

• Seinfeld Is Unfunny: The whole "Worst Game Ever" reputation. Most modern players only consider it boring at worst, rather than completely and utterly infuriating and unlikable. And since quite a few later games are considered to hold the title better, the title isn't used for this game very often anymore.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) was a huge disappointment, but calling it the worst game of all time is a stretch.

And frankly, calling any work "the worst work ever" is something we want to avoid on this wiki.

The first entry in the first folder of NightmareFuel.Dragon Ball Z has a chained sinkhole to a bunch of other shonen Nightmare Fuel pages.

I note that there is a tendency to sinkhole sentences to random works, presumably as Memetic Mutations of quotes.

For example, I've removed the sinkhole in the caption at Stealthy Cephalopod to Literature.The Magic School Bus. I also changed the pothole in the image caption of Dating Do-Si-Do from Webcomic.Questionable Content to String Theory, which does clearly relate to the caption.

I don't mind captions being potholed to the work they reference. Otherwise it can lead to the nagging feeling that a quote sounds familiar but you don't know where it's from.

Okay, I restored Stealthy Cephalopod, although I'll keep Dating Do-Si-Do where it is.

If a caption directly and intentionally references another work, why shouldn’t it be potholed?

Found this subbullet on Funny.Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines with chained sinkholes.

Playing With/ pages often have sinkholes where the hypothetical characters' name is linked to sometimes two or more tropes. Can they be removed outright?

Just replace those names with the tropes (e.g. "Alice" → "a Crazy Cat Lady who is a Dimensional Traveler"), then add an appositive if names are required.
