They're equally cute and it equally shows that they're mute. I see no reason to change from the current to one of those suggestions.

^ What makes you think of mute in current?

I explained in post 3 about the "is cute but not mute" part and asked about the context from the page, and then post 5 finished the argument explaining the context the page itself provides the "is mute" part.

I didn't offer the argument again because nobody has said how the current doesn't convey "is mute" more than the suggestions in 15, though for some reason people have been voting in favor of them. I think they're good, but they're equally as good as the current, which leads me to say keep.

I think 15.3 is a little clearer on the mute part, since covering her mouth with a sign is at least to me reasonably clear.

15.1 at least has what would be normally dialog which shows that she is writing her words rather than saying them. 15.3 looks to me like she is shyly hiding behind a love letter.

The love confession card in 15.3 is not helping the mute case, because it's a situation many people would go mute in. As noted in Love Letter.

If you are so shy they you can’t say it but have to write it instead and look cute while doing it is quite representative of the trope.

I think 15.1 is the better option because a) It has subtitles, b) Makes clear that the character is using written word to communicate which imply the muteness well enough and c) fit the "cute" part. 15.2 and 15.3 are not clear enough, both cases can be a person just holding a sign with no indication of mute.

I don't see how having subtitles is an argument at all. They're just translating what she's writing. Being cute is also not an argument above the others.

The main problem I have with 15.1 is that there's no connection between the cute part and the mute part. "Cute and also mute" isn't what the trope is about, and we need to clearly demonstrate that that's not what the trope is about. It needs to be "Cute because mute," and I think 15.3 shows that connection, even if you can argue it's not absolutely clear she's mute. The trope name implies as much. What's more important is that she cleary doesn't speak in that situation. Which actually is the case for Yuu as well, since she can choose to speak, if she wants to.

In short, I'd vote 15.3 slightly in favour of the current, and I'd vote against the other suggestions.

Those first two are more Talking with Signs. The third one doesn't look as cute as the other candidates to me.

Whether it's the current or 15.3 is a lateral change for me, so my vote hasn't changed — just responding to the newest suggestions.

Edit: I agree with Millership [down][down]. That's pretty much my point. The two suggestions I'm talking about are not cute, and the second one is more The Woobie (or trying to be). Looking sad/pathetic does not make them cute.

By that standard, the existence of Talking with Signs should be a no-no for all examples listed so far in this thread.

Not necessarily, if the example is cute on top of that. Some overlap between tropes is to be expected.

[up][up][up][up]Hmm, speaking of A Silent Voice... perhaps this image of Shouko? She's still Talking with Signs, but the text adds something imo (I don't think "I'm deaf" is a far logic jump to "I don't normally communicate through speech.").

[up] That is misleading though, that would make people think this is literal which is The Speechless.

None of those in 36 are screaming cute to me really. Still gotta go with 15.3 or 15.1.

About the subtitles, it helps because she could be saying anything from: "We can't make sound or the monster will hear us" to "No smoking". The concept behind the trope, IIRC, is that the person needs to communicate that way and is not something temporary.

~41: But the trope can be about literal mutes, as long as they have a cute childlike appearance. If they're not cute and such, then they're The Speechless.

Is it crowner time?

[up][up][up] No, Everyone who is mute is The Speechless. This is a different trope who might be The Speechless but also might not be.

They could be Cannot Talk to Women, Eyes Always Averted, Not Good With People, Shrinking Violet, Situational Sociability, Twice Shy or any number of tropes. It is hopelessly limiting when you just use one really restrictive trope of so many.
