Spoilers for the first episode of Borut... wait.

If you read the title, then you know the deal. Naruto's ended after years of publication. All the characters settled down and moved on with their lives. Our story begins with the children of those characters.

Meet Boruto - he's not the mediocre ninja that his father was. Where Naruto was untalented, Boruto is lazy. Where Naruto didn't have parents, Boruto has them. One of them at least. See his dad's too busy being the leader of the, you know, village. So where Naruto dreamed of being Hokage, Boruto hates the concept.

The story begins in media res as we flash to an as-of-yet inexplicable scene where the village has been left in ruin, and Boruto is the last man standing against a powerful new threat. But before this horrific future came to pass, Boruto was just a genin, ready to walk through the same trials of ninja-hood as his parents.

Ah Naruto. You're so dead. Deader than dead. Dead as the dormouse. Just watch.

We've yet to learn who Kawaki is or why "the age of the ninja is over" (beyond a single city/village getting destroyed). Or if Naruto's even really dead.

Also, fair warning: the cast is reportedly characterized differently between the manga and anime versions. So like with Dragonball Super's anime and manga, there may be spoilers from either version. Currently the manga seems to be ahead of the anime.

The manga starts by covering the events of the Boruto movie (plus a few extra elements), but apparently the anime starts its own story right off the bat.

[up][up][up][up]I wouldn't characterise anime!Boruto as lazy. Well yeah we didn't actually seen him put much effort, but we didn't see him slack either. He is troublemaker either way though.

He is good in academics and ninjutsu and is pretty eager prove he isn't "riding his father coattails". He also cope with Naruto's position much better than his manga counterpart, though obviously it's not ideal.

All said, using movie/manga description would be pretty misleading as both continuity pursue different direction.

I guess I have only one question:

Is Sasuke's daughter useless because she's a girl in the Naruto universe, or is she a Physical God because she's an Uchiha?

[up][up] He's the only one that looks exactly like one of his parents. At least the others look somewhat different like a new haircut.

[up]I know, it was a joke about how the laziest character had the least effort put into his kid.

They seem to be walking the middle ground with her - she doesn't seem very important to the plot yet, but she's kicking ass whenever she's in a fight and the fanbase actually likes her.

Sasuke's competence as a protagonist and Sakura's skillset. It works.

As far as the main cast goes in comparison to the early part 1 cast

  • Boruto: Comes off as a less standoffish, less Book Dumb Naruto, just different enough to stand apart as his own character
  • Sarada: Seems to inherit the more positive traits of her parents while having very few of the negative (then again, she hast had a proper character episode yet in this)
  • Mitsuki: Sai but less of a jerkass and more Innocently Insensitive, and with somehow even less people skills
  • Shikadai: Like I said, he's pretty much Shika 2.0, though he seems a bit less of a jerk than his father.
  • Inojin: Sai but with actual people skills and somehow even more of a jerk
  • Chouchou: Kind of like Ino but way more laid back and far less of an Alpha Bitch, they seemed to have toned down her more obnoxious traits from Gaiden thankfully.
  • Metal Lee: Not too much like Lee, seems far less Hot-Blooded and way more insecure.
  • Tails Denki: Kinda meh on this guy, though the concept of a Gagiter Genius ninja sounds interesting. Reminds me a bit of Manta.
  • Iwabee: Character wise he feels like some weird fusion of early series Naruto and Neji- pre character development
  • Sumire: Moe class rep archtype, not much else to go on. I see some people calling her Hinata 2.0 and outside of her Shrinking Violet tendencies I don't really see it.

Boruto has sort of this Big Man on Campus thing going on which I appreciate. He's very socialized compared to Naruto's whole obnoxious loud mouth with No Social Skills schtict.

But here are some episode synopsis's for the next few...

Episode 7 (May 17) – Love and Potato Chips…!! Boruto’s classmate, Chōchō Akimichi, has been feeling the gaze of an unseen figure on her, making her uncomfortable. When she finally catches the culprit Magire Kakuremino, it is revealed that he was actually watching Chōchō’s class representative. After knowing that Magire has feelings for Class Rep, Chōchō encourages him to confess to her.

Episode 8 (May 24) – A Dream’s Message On a certain night, Boruto had a dream where he was given an Ocular Power from a mysterious character. Boruto believes that he had awoken the Byakugan, an inherited ability from his mother, Hinata’s side of the family, the Hyuga clan. His father Naruto however, does not believe him. Hence Boruto decided to go to his grandfather Hiashi’s place to listen to the story of the Byakugan.

Episode 9 (May 31) – One’s Own Proof To prove that he had awoken the Byakugan, it is decided that Boruto will spar with his aunt, Hanabi. With Naruto and his grandfather watching over them, Boruto fights boldly, but no matter how hard he tries he is not able to activate the Byakugan, and gets down on himself as a result.

It was only a matter of time! I hope we get Mitsuki's backstory animated too.

This episode was remarkably well animated for something so low key.

So looks like Orochimaru is behind the crazy, but everyone probably saw that coming what with Denki's encounter with the crazy shadow happening after he was bit by a snake.

Next week we get to see Boruto hanging out with his grandpa, should be fun to see how that relationship is.

Cho-Cho has been my favorite of the new kids ever since the show started so I'm happy she got some focus. Sucks that she had to share it with Sumire though. Hopefully if she gets another focus episode she won't have to share it.

I think the line about Mitsuki investigating pertained to why Boruto can see said shadows rather then what is actually going on with them.

I find it kinda hilarous that, out of all characters, Cho-cho is the one who seems to have inherited the Talk no Jutsu

[up][up]As I see it new protagonist -> new villain. Plus unless Orochimaru somehow missed who is Boruto's mother there is nothing much to investigate...

Also don't forget Orochimaru, as evil bastard he is, was formally absolved of his crimes and Voice is Leafs ally. Making him enemy now would be silly.
