It's a new era of lawlessness as Island Nations all need to cross the desolate oceans. In the beginning, the main transportation of both people and goods were the oh-so dependable art of sailing. With naval forces becoming more and more powerful over the years, it seemed that Piracy was becoming a dangerous trade and pirates themselves would go extinct very soon. Nobody, however, could have expected the next big breakthrough for science, which brought in motion this bright new era: the Aero-Era many have begun to call it.

The combination of air transport, expensive cargoes, and the absence of any unified policing agency resulted in a new kind of crime: air piracy. Ships have become fish and the prey for various Air Pirates who attack by air like Hawks hunting fish. But for every Hawk, there's an Eagle. And those Eagles are called Aces. Safely securing cargo, fighting pirates. Some may call Aces superheroes in airplanes, others may call them sleazy bounty hunters. Some may even call them just as bad, if not, worse than the pirates they're chasing. But whoever they are or whatever they're called, in the open air, over open seas, and even over the cities of the numerous dotted islands, Aces have become the go-to force for when things need to be done.

And now the year is 1937. a depression has hit the various Island Nations after a great war had occurred just five years prior. Some islands have managed to handle this economic landslide, but for the most part, many islands have fallen onto harder times. Piracy has reached an all time high. So high that the various islands cannot keep up with the sudden surplus of Air Pirates. Bounty Hunting, however, has never been so lucrative...or rather, it would, if said hunters didn't squabble over each other's prey.

But you're not like those other Bounty Hunters, are you? No, you're a smart one. Which is why you signed up to work for the Mercenary Company High Aces set up on Apple Island. Do you need the extra help and security? Maybe, maybe not. But it's better to work for a share of the bounty than no bounty at all. So suit up, Ace! We've got work to do!

Welcome to Aeronaught: Skypirate Hunting! This RP is heavily based off of Crimson Skies but with an alternate, Oceanpunk setting. Some time ago, long ago-like, longer than most of your characters can likely remember, the world was flooded and the continents were broken up into continents. All these islands are named after various fruits and vegetables.

And now the year is 1937, Air Piracy has been around since the 1850s. Schizo Tech is going on in full force with technology being a good couple of years ahead of what we can do. So your personal aircraft can range from planes that were created a good few years ahead of the 1930s to being original, fantasy creations that you may or may not have designed yourself. You can give yourself Robot Henchmen or be a robot yourself. You can use contemporary bullets or laser ammunition.

Island Nations

Apple Island: The New York analog, consisting of the main 'Big Apple' and the smaller 'Little Red', 'Little Green', and 'Little Yellow' surrounding islands that seem to rotate around the island like some odd sun. It's the island that never sleeps and is often told to be the birth of modern aircraft technology. The headquarters for the High Aces Mercenary Corporation is set up on Little Green Island, not too far from the 'Drunken Duck', a famous tavern for Aces in the shape of an actual duck.

Esterfront: Steampunk town, I'm assuming. (Sergey_Smirnov)

Engine Island: Part of the Metal Iron Chain People who hail from here are known for being tough due to their history of violence in the past. Highly industrialized island. Apex Predator-Anthros best steer clear. (Paradoxial Stratage)

Queensland: Island substitute of England. (Fantasy Liver)

G.U.N.S.T.O.C.K.: Greater Union of Naval Skyfarers, Traders, Oceanic Cartographers, and Kin. Group of floating airships forming a unified nation as well as a mobile trade hub. Well known and respected nation. (Taco)

Ydra: Floating island. Hidden by most, if not, all of civilization. (Solip Schism)

Pomegranate Island: Random island. (Soli Schism)

Cloudberry Island: Island far North. Suspected to be the home of the Anouki. (Blu Beri Pi)

She sees him as an equal.
  • Aircraft:
    • The Do-217 a long range bomber, able to deliver up to 1 metric ton of bombs over a target. It carries 6 machine guns of varying calibers for self defense purposes, but this particular plane specially modified so that it can carry a smaller interceptor with it into the combat area.

Was just about to start up my own take on an air pirate RP, but would be much more interested in playing one then running one.

Pretty sure but want to double check, Airships will be used rather then ship ships? Would there be any use for a torpedo bomber?

Kitsune okay?

Yeah, most of the combat will be done against airships, not ship-ships. I'm on the fence of the usefulness of a Torpedo Bomber, but if we go after a regular ship, then maybe there'd be some use.

And depends. If you just mean a Fox or even a Fox with multiple tails, than yeah, sure. If you mean magic, I want there to be as little magic as possible. So no gamebreaking like with mind-altering illusions or killing curses.

Also, there's been a quick edit to the sign up sheet for a personal equipment and skills for Any kinds of weapons, items or skills outside of flying.

Imca (Veteran)
#5: Oct 15th 2016 at 11:26:53 AM

Well I guess you could mount a cruise missile under it instead of a conventional torpedo for airships.... maybe.

Basicly a large, jet engine powered, low flying, posibly unguided(depending on other tech) missile. >.<

I currently have a WIP of a character sheet for this RP if it ever takes off. My only point of contention is that I'm not sure whether to give him an aircraft or not since his skills are primarily in aero-mechanics. I'm a bit concerned that if I give him both an aircraft his own and the skills to fix stuff, he'll come across as having too many skills right off the bat. Here's what I have so far though:

  • Name: Kyle Jay Darringer

  • Age: 27

  • Race: Rat (Of the sapient anthro variety)

  • Appearance: Has a height of 4 feet, 1 inch (with his tail making up 6 inches) and a weight of 63 lbs. Has a Diesel Punk-styled cybernetic left arm that also functions as a multi-tool, along with a mechanical left eye that looks more like an amber light than an eyeball. Has a light brown organic eye and black fur with dark skin. Has a tattoo of an engine with a lightning bolt behind it on his left pectoral. Often wears a dark green mechanic's jumpsuit and a mid-sized pack for parts and supplies.

  • Personality: A little gruff around the edges. Has a tendency to be sarcastic and at times cynical. Has a sense of consummate professionalism most of the time whenever he's on the job. Off the clock, off the clock he tends to be an aloof loner with little to say, however it is possible to get him into a conversation every now and again. Possesses a downplayed sense of prejudice against anthros of the apex-predator variety due to how he was raised and the history of his people, however he will demonstrate a nominal amount of respect for his predator coworkers when required.

  • Equipment: Carries a standard tool kit for repairing smaller aircraft and basic machines (mainly consists of a socket wrench with attachments for various sizes, an adjustable crescent “monkey” wrench, duct tape, a small fire extinguisher for electrical and fuel-based fires, a flashlight, a magnet, spare bolts and other parts, and a few other items). Also wields a chrome six-shooter nicknamed, “Failed Diplomacy” and several rounds of ammunition.

  • Skills: Has experience repairing aircraft and some other machines since he was a teenager. While he may not be able to work miracles, he has experience building and fixing a variety of aircraft types and can even do internal repairs in mid-flight. (Anything outside of flying)

  • Background: Hailing from Engine Island within the Metal Island Chain, Darringer left his nation of Rezzenon to pursue mercenary work both to apply the knowledge of his trade of aero-mechanics in a more lucrative position, and to escape the politics of his people that have only become more all-consuming over the years. While his people are known for being rugged survivalists and powerful industrialists, the people of Rezzenon are infamous for their violent history and hatred of apex-predator anthros that resulted from it. (I'm gonna allow some worldbuilding here. You can be from any sort of island you can think of. Whether it resembles a country like Ireland or Egypt or is well known for it's Mining Colonies or Military Strength. Maybe you hail from some giant ship that sails the waters endlessly like a moving island. Go nuts.)

  • Aircraft: Undecided

  • Crewmates: N/A

  • Notes: Speaks with a light “natural” Australian accent, so while he may not sound like a stereotypical Australian from a cartoon, he will occasionally use slang and the dialect will be noticeable now and again.

If you have any suggestions for edits, feel free to mention them. If you want me to do more world-building in regards to this character's background, I can handle that also.

I normally hate doing this but I feel I should probably ask before making this because it's sort of a big departure: can I make a character who's functionally an aerial marine, whose "aircraft" is just a jetpack and some grappling hooks?

  • Name: Jay Berryman
  • Age: 27
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance: He has severe burns on his hands and face. Having lost most of his hair, he now shaves his head. Due to heavy burns, his once-handsome features are now disfigured. He dresses in his old fur-lined bomber jacket from his Air Force days with sunglasses and white trousers.
  • Personality: Once friendly and cocky, Jay is now marked by cynicism and heavy sarcasm due to his self-loathing and self-pitying that arose from his injuries. However, he still maintains his love of flying and is desperate to prove to everyone and himself that he is still just as good of a pilot as he ever was. So strong is this desire to prove the world wrong that his "leisure time" is often spent just practicing flying. Despite his currently abrasive personality, he still does maintain his love of human company and likes to show off when he can.
  • Equipment: A six-shot revolver and a box of bullets that he always keeps handy. Also has a book of matches and a flask that's always filled with a little of that "liquid courage" that Jay feels enhances his flying.
  • Skills: Is a decent shot with his pistol. Is quite adept at drink mixology and knows a fair bit about military tactics, particularly in regards to aircraft combat.
  • Background: From Queensland (my island substitute for England), Jay always loved going to air shows with his father and, thus, enlisted to be in the war as part of Queensland's Air Force. While he was a good pilot, he was shot down in battle and doused with jet fuel and suffered severe burns. He received an honorable discharge and got a pension but due to the damage suffered in his hands, the Air Force felt that his performance would be affected so they denied him entry back to the force. Bitter over this, Jay has been practicing to overcome the slowness of his hands in regards to piloting and has signed up with the High Aces - dedicated to proving that he's just as good of a pilot as he ever was.
  • Aircraft: A Tigertail Flipper (basically a fictional equivalent of an Armstrong Whitworth F.K.8). Has a rear mounted machine gun for the observer but no weapons for the pilot. Looks like this.
  • Crew:
    • Pilot - Jay Berryman
    • Observer/Gunner: A Anthropomorphic Shepadoodle Dog named Bosco who has is agreeable but has a tendency to get distracted during combat.

Question. Does High Aces provide its mercenaries with any equipment/aircraft/etc. or are they expected to bring their own resources to the table? The character I have in mind has a backstory in which he stowed away on a ship leaving his home island and somehow found his way to Apple Island and to High Aces. Do I need to construct a backstory in which he somehow got his hands on an aircraft before arriving, or would he be able to sign up without any resources?

@Paradoxial Stratagem: Everything about him checks out so far. I don't think that him being able to fly planes as well would make him too broken or anything. It just means he can take care of his stuff. But whether with or without a plane, he's accepted.

@Taco: I guess I'm okay with that. If you wanna make him that, then go ahead.

@Fantasy Liver: Jay Berryman checks out, he's accepted.

@Solip Schism: High Aces expects their mercenaries to come in with their own equipment.

  • Name: Grapnel "Nelly" Cord
  • Age: 18
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance: Nelly is really skinny even considering how young he is, a super whippy boy made almost entirely of muscle and tendons and bones. He is 5'8" tall and wears his flight jumpsuits even when he isn't actively in a fight, mostly because he doesn't have any actual casualwear. If the situation calls for more formalwear, though, he does have a fancier version of the same uniform, with a ton of little tassels and fancy cuffs and stuff.
  • Personality: Nelly is really inquisitive about the wider world. He's never actually left his home flotilla, and never flown around either, so he's prone to distraction about New Things. He writes almost as a reflex whenever he's not actively in danger, recording everything he experiences. He has never been in actual combat, but assumes it'll be fine judging by the books! He is the kind of person to say "that's swell" unironically.
  • Equipment:
    • Academic Equipment: Nelly carries around a notebook and a pen at basically all times, both very sturdy and capable of writing in basically any situation.
    • Martyr Juice: Nelly's flight suit has a special liquid known as Martyr Juice running in veins along its surface that draws in excess heat from outside and holds onto it safely, making him effectively immune to sources of normally deadly heat while he wears it. The Juice needs to be cycled with a second volume of it after most missions and allowed to cool in open air over 24 hours in order to be usable.
    • Grapples: A set of grappling hooks attached to steel cables, capable of both affixing to ships and to flay the bejeezus out of a target if necessary.
    • Hammer: A handheld mallet with a buttspike designed to rupture glass canopies and skulls.
  • Skills:
    • Scholar: Nelly is an experienced scholar in spite of his age and knows a lot of things about the various peoples of the sky, though he is extremely lacking in regards to those living on the ground and sea. He knows a lot about the theory, history, and philosophy behind various aircraft manufacturers, but is not a particularly experienced mechanic.
  • Background: Nelly hails from the Greater Union of Naval Skyfarers, Traders, Oceanic Cartographers, and Kin, or G.U.N.S.T.O.C.K., a loosely organized flotilla of airships with no central core at any given time that resembles a combination shipyard, fortress, and aircraft carrier. Respected by most, it is a mobile trade hub for basically anything you need bought or sold, with a solid contingent of military and mercenary forces to keep it safe. His family are mostly engineers, writers, and scholars, collecting stories from the people of G.U.N.S.T.O.C.K. as they come and go from the ship. This had been going on for so long that when Nelly came around he realized there was little left for him to write about! He gained a natural affinity for climbing around not only the stacks of books in the Cord home, but all around the flotilla, trying to find unexplored nooks and crannies to chronicle. This was not nearly as fruitful as he expected, unfortunately, which led him to something unprecedented among the Cords: leaving. Nelly joined the High Aces as an Aerial Marine, committed to apply all those self-defense lessons he learned about in a new and dangerous world nobody had ever really committed to print on the flotilla!
  • Aircraft: The G.U.N.S.T.O.C.K. Personal Boarding Apparatus is a kit common among Nelly's hometown defense force. It is a large backpack with multiple straps that fit across the entire body, and combines a grappling hook rig with a jetpack to provide personal maneuverability outside of aircraft. The main body is a pod about the size of a normal duffel bag and contains plenty of fuel to power the jet in the back. Little braces come off the arms and attach to the wearer at the forearms, serving both as armguards in melee and as winches to cast out and retrieve grappling hooks threaded into them.

All right, here's my first draft. I'm still not entirely clear on what level of technology we're using, so just let me know if his aircraft is too advanced or what-have you and I'll adjust as necessary.

  • Name: Ejra Demoris (pronounced AY-ruh)
  • Age: 24 (born in late winter of 1912)
  • Race: Human—Angel (Not that kind of angel—see background)
  • Appearance: Short but lean. Dresses in close-fitting, nondescript, mostly functional gear. Fond of the 1930s aviator look, with goggles and a few too many belts to be eminently practical. Due to a genetic defect, he has starkly-white hair and completely black irises, marking him as what his homeland refers to as "angels". The black irises in his eyes give him an appearance of having severely dilated eyes, but his vision is perfectly sharp.
  • Personality: Mischievous and playful. Cocky, but friendly. A big fan of the Indy Ploy. Tends to use humor as a shield.
  • Equipment: Has an extensive stock of, and knowledge of, drugs and poisons, many of which he carries on him. For use with some of his poisons, he also carries a set of needle shuriken. Wears two boot knives, one of which is a 4.5 inch tantō, the other being a 3-inch push dagger.
  • Skills: Ejra is a textbook Fragile Speedster and Lightning Bruiser, skilled in martial arts. He can't take a punch, but he can damn sure evade and deliver one. He prefers to avoid close-range physical confrontations, though. Having gotten his start as a cat burglar, he specializes in infiltrations and sabotage. He also has an extensive knowledge of poisons and drugs.
  • Background: Ejra was born in the floating city of Ydra, a place plagued with civil unrest and Fantastic Racism. A small percentage of Ydran natives are born with a unique mutation causing them to have white hair and black irises, as well as less visible traits such as heightened reflexes and slightly above-average intelligence, but weaker-than-average muscle strength. A concerted campaign by the ruling classes has resulted in these people, known as "angels", being viewed as second-class citizens and regarded by many as subhuman. As a result, they are largely excluded from upper society and are discriminated against in the workforce, and many of them resort to crime in order to survive. The defect itself is highly unusual and does not seem to be strictly genetic, as angels almost never produce offspring with the defect. Ejra spent his formative years learning to survive in the shadows from a friend, another angel named Trevor. In 1932, he stowed away on a freighter leaving the city, and upon finding that people outside Ydra had never even heard of Ydran angels and thus had no prejudice against him, he never looked back. He spent a year freelancing with a small band of pirates based on Pomegranate Island, one of whom gave him—quite unwillingly—his aircraft as a result of an ill-advised bet. After becoming disillusioned with the piratic lifestyle, he moved on. When our story begins, he has just found his way to Apple Island, where he has heard of a mercenary company known as High Aces.
  • Aircraft: The MurDross MD-12 "Murderess II", a double-engine fighter with forward-swept wings and thrust-vectoring (i.e., engine exhausts that move to pitch and roll the aircraft, complementing the fins and flaps that normally do that on their own), which he swindled the craft's original owner out of in a night of drunken betting. The craft is remarkably fast and agile—much like Ejra himself—but has very light armor and, due to its light weight, a limited capacity for carrying weapons. It's capable of rudimentary remote piloting, but this mode of control isn't nearly fine enough for dogfighting. Its weapons loadout includes:
    • 1 nose-mounted machine gun; a rapidfire low-caliber weapon that excels at precision shots against unarmored or very lighty-armored targets, but fails against anything heavier.
    • Depending on the mission, Ejra can carry 6 air-to-air missiles or 2 guided penetration bombs (GPM bombs have no propulsion system, but have tailfins and a simple onboard computer that guides the bomb to its target after being dropped. The bomb itself is high-yield explosive with a small splash area).
  • Crewmates: None as of yet.

Robot girls okay? I think I have finaly got around to making a thing. >.<

[up] Thrust vectoring is normally in addition to flaps, not as a replacement, since it improves maneuverability but gimble and plates alone cant pull every kind of maneuver flaps can, errr if you actually care about functional areodynamics that is, considering this is a game. >.<

So here's my shot.

Name: Captain Tonrar

Race: Anouki

Appearance: Old man of the north.

Personality: Tonrar is a dad, in spirit. He cares for each and every one of his comrades and crew, and will defend them to his last breath. That sort of loyalty is returned tenfold to him by his crew. He believes strongly in justice and in hunting down outlaws, not necessarily for the reward, but to do the right thing.

Equipment:

  • Phlogiston Gun: A heat based weapon, it can fire both an EXTREMELY long range beam type attack, as well as a short range, wide burst of heat.
  • Emergency Wingsuit: In case the worst happens, he keeps this on at all times. Its saved his life more than once.

Skills:

  • Veteran Captain: Tonrar is a very experienced airman, and has an air of command and experience that makes him a natural leader in any situation. He is the voice of reason. Furthermore, he has seen every possible situation out there, and could write an entire manual on flying and command by himself, if he so desired.
  • Skilled Navigator: Not only is Tonrar excellent at using modern navigation tools, he is well trained in the older ways, including navigation by the stars. He always knows where he is and where he's going, and how to get there.
  • Old Salt: In a fight, Tonrar isn't too shabby either. He's survived every combat situation he's ever been in - both in person and in command of a vessel. He knows exactly what to do and has the ability to do it.

Background: Tonrar has always been a man of the air - though his people call Cloudberry Island, far to the north, home, he was born on his father's ship, and has lived his whole life in the sky, one way or another. And it has been a long and productive one. Now, near the end of his days, he is still a force to be reckoned with, as captain of a very decorated warship, and hero of multiple known armed conflicts. He is known far and wide for his heroism and skill, and respected by many. He is the kind of captain all good areonauts should aspire to be.

Aircraft: The Anernerk: - A relatively large warship, the Anernerk might not necessarily be the fastest bird in the sky, but she just might be one of the best armed. A large array of guns, cannons, and other such accouterments bristle all over this lovely aircraft, which even comes with docking space for anyone who wishes to hitch a ride.

Crew: Assorted nameless NPC's, as well as any PC who wants to sign up.

So that's my initial write up, happy to workshop out any issues, if there are any.

If you don't think that's a good idea, I can just use a regular plane.

I can file the serial numbers off of the Anouki a little more if you want, but the character design tickled my fancy.

As for his reasons to become a mercenary, its a way to get paid while also making the world a safer place.

@Skiller: That's acceptable!

@Blu Beri Pie: I suppose that works for me. Accepted.

Um, this...is still a work in progress so there's corners that need polishing and stuff that'll likely need changing...

  • Name: 'Joshua' & 'Aisha'. ...The last names have been smugged off the forms.
  • Age: 19.
  • Race: Artificial (maybe) Human.
  • Appearance: Something like this. Although with the head's swapped, I suppose.
  • Personality: For 99% of the time, Joshua is always calm and level-headed regardless of the situation. While his main motivation is to survive and protect his sister, the young man's strong moral compass is one of the few factors one would consider calling him human over.

    • Aisha on the other hand is far more emotional, energetic, outgoing and temperamental to the point she almost makes up for her brother's stoic, serious and suppressed attitude. Having little patience for people who can't get to the point and short-tempered, the fact she's...far more fight-happy and morally ambiguous compared to her sibling means she's...a little unpredictable.

  • Equipment: Golden Sun: A unique and exquisite short-sword with a translucent, but glittering golden feldspar inset on the blade's hilt/cross-guard. Their family emblem on the pommel is concealed with an emerald colored bow. Otherwise, the weapon itself is nothing out of the ordinary and held onto for sentimental value. Usually wielded by Joshua.
  • Silver Star: The other family weapon with the crest concealed by a frilly midnight blue-ribbon. A deceptively simple handgun with an internal mechanism that coats the loaded bullets with a silver agent that cause temporary paralyzation to one's nervous system if the bullet isn't lethal, the fire-arm is something Aisha holds onto for self-defense.

  • Skills: Emphatic Link: Less of a skill and more of talent/quirk the siblings possess. Being able to sense each other's positions, emotions (well...sort of) and able to synchronize their thought process to work perfectly in tandem...the issue is Aisha being either too emotionally charged or down making it next to, if not impossible to work with such an efficient synergy.

    • Fleet of Foot. Years of being on the run means the both of them are quick on their feet and quite athletic.

Background: Born to or rather, created for a noble currently on the throne and in need of a potential heir, life for the twins wasn't exactly going to be normal from the beginning. With an unexpected revolt forcing them to flee with a few of the servants still loyal to their father. No word of his fate have been mentioned over the years and forced to flee from island to island to avoid being found.

Taking up fake aliases from an old, if slightly cliche novel to hide their actual identities, time continued to fly by and by the time of their nineteenth birthday, with little alternative as their 'inheritance' rapidly continued to run out and needing a method of getting money before they ran out completely, Joshua spent what money they could spare on an obsolete plane before enlisting with the High Aces to have some means of putting food on the table...and without drawing attention to himself too much. ...Although when Aisha quickly found out, she insisted on following to make sure he didn't get himself killed.

Aircraft: A sleek, if outdated two-seater bi-plane armed with mini/gatling guns. I'm...not good with specific specs so I'll be getting some help on designing/choosing some things.

On a similar tangent...while she is not the better pilot between the two, Aisha's kept out of the gunner's seat...at least until they've saved up enough funds to upgrade to a less limited form of weaponry as while she's a much more effective gunman, especially against large squadrons, her tendency to get a...little...trigger happy tends to burn through their ammunition at a startling rate.

Hope you weren't expecting anything witty here. Maybe some day.

I KNEW THERE WAS A REASON I FOUND THE Crimson Skies NOVEL AT MY USED BOOKS PLACE.

Also, if it's alright, seeing as no one's gonna mind, I'll just lift the stats and name straight from the setting. Unless the GM has something to say about that.

Definite interest.

Imca: Ooh, good point. I've edited that detail.

HydraGem: I kiiiiiinda did that on purpose. As soon as I read "no angels or demons", I was like, "Hey wait a second, I bet I can get away with using this old setting of mine that has angels..."

Granted, in the original story they actually were angels with all of the divine implications of that word, but that's obviously not the case here.

Looking forward to getting started. :3
