This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.
Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:
- If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term
. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
- If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
- You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
- Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
- If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
- Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

I've removed Fountain of Expies from the TRS Queue for now because I'm not sure if I can finish the wick check on time.

I finished a Wick Check on Ace Of Spades. It's a starving, pre-2010 trope with <50 examples, and I found that a good number of them could get folded into Playing Card Motifs, and I only found 12 actual examples of the trope's real meaning (Ace of Spades is a bad omen) not used as part of Playing Card Motifs. I'll add it to the queue.

You don't need to remove it from the TRS Queue. It can be put on hold, just like The One Who Wears Shoes, which is also put on hold due to not having a wick check.

If it matters, the trope has actually only existed for about half a decade because it replaced a disambiguation page, and the page creation timestamp is from when it was a disambiguation page.
Synchronicity went over this on the discussion page:
- This page used to be a disambiguation.
- A launched TLP replaced the disambig text on Jan 8, 2019.
Personally, I think the fact that a newer trope is that heavily misused is more of a concern than if it happened for an older one, since older tropes seem to be more prone to attracting misuse (though not always since TRS has dealt with newer tropes in the past).

Er... I just noticed I accidentally removed Camera Screw's entry on YMMV.Home Page when I tweaked the wording of Broken Aesop's entry; I'm guessing I selected more text than I meant to before I hit backspace. I put it back and re-linked to Camera Screw's TRS thread since that decision was made just under a year ago.

Good to know - this was a mistake made on the Starving Tropes page as well. There is also a request from the Disambigs Request page asking for a revival of the disambig as a green link. I do think I have a good case for it being (in practice at least) largely redundant with Playing Card Motifs anyway.
I also did a wick check for Out Giving Birth, Back in Two Minutes - I found that it's being used to mean a lot of Pregnancy Does Not Work That Way tropes.

Recently there have been cases of crowners being open longer than usual, and that hasn't gone unnoticed by others, but it seems like this was only brought to my attention via posts in the relevant threads, and I don't recall any hollers being sent.
Since I've been sick this month, I haven't been as active as I usually am (I've mentioned this on Yack Fest, but it wouldn't surprise me if not everyone on TRS has seen those posts), so please holler if mod attention is needed, since that would make it easier for mods other than me to see requests for mod action (while I tend to check on threads manually, aside from when I'm less active like this, not every mod does). In addition, engineers are allowed to do a lot of the tasks that were mod exclusive until last year, so calling crowners isn't completely mod-exclusive anymore.

What do you mean? If you're asking whether you're allowed to make a crowner, the answer is that you've been allowed to make TRS and IP crowners ever since you became an engineer. If you're not sure if the thread is ready for one (such as whether every option has been accounted for), then ask for feedback in the thread.

I checked the thread, and I see what you mean. I've dealt with similar situations even before the engineer position existed, and yeah, it's a pain when a thread gets to a point where it would normally be time for a crowner to be made, only for it to not be clear what to put on one.

I have just put Why We Can't Have Nice Things into the TRS Queue. I've performed a wick check (linked in the queue) and found it's pretty greatly misused. The random sample of 50 wicks came up with over half of it typically being about something, usually a valuable thing, getting damaged or destroyed or using the trope as a Stock Phrase, when the trope is about one or more characters doing something that leads to an outcome where a (good) thing gets ruined for everyone else.
I asked here about it when I found the on-page examples misusing the trope, and my concerns turned out to be pretty much true and shared.

No, that's how it works. If another crowner is needed (which one is in this case, since it was decided to rename and a new name needs to be chosen), just replace the crowner with another one.
