Actually, there's already a thread on this movie. Been a bit surprised with the lack of comments on the topic though.
Together, we are one.I'm watching it right now, though I have the raw.
MMORPGs are serious business.
The only sub available, for some reason, is HUGE. I'm comfortable with the RAW, but some of the more complicated terminology loses me.
That said, I do love the bit of reversal at work here what with the AI being much more human, dreaming of reaching the stars, compared to the vast bulk of humanity digitized in "Heaven". Ditto with the I Choose to Stay decision of our heroine at the end, especially when you remember her complaining at the start of the movie.
That Kugyuu though... XD

Anybody wanna make a tvtropes page now?
Wait, someone subbed this?
I can understand Japanese (elementary level, non-JPLT certified yet), but I will admit that I went cross-eyed with some of the scientific jargon. Still, that means that I still got 70% of the dialogue.
And no, I don't think this has been subbed yet, but any translation delay is likely due to the fact that it's going to be aired in the US this December anyway.
Think it already came out, did it?
So has anyone here seen the film, and did the like it? Cause some on MAL seem to hate it:
"I can't say it was the worst anime nor the worst movie I saw this year...but it's pretty close to both. Watching this atrocity was the first time I ever considered walking out of a theater in the middle.
I'm not even sure where to begin. The story, the characters...Angela is like an awful gross light novel heroine but somehow even worse because I'm supposed to take her seriously. I'm sorry this is so incoherent but this movie just made me so mad. I could never have possibly imagined Gen Urobuchi could have written something this bad."
Because Angela IS bratty for the first two-thirds of the movie. Which is why rather than Angela herself, one has to pay attention to her conversations with Dingo and, later on, Frontier Chaser.
Hm, not sure how to feel about it. I think I mostly dislike it
The CG is good (mostly), but feels kind of weird in a movie that has cyberspace as a plot point
The pacing is... ugh. First quarter is mostly incoherent action sequences, then half the movie is solid exposition (felt like Monogatari, but uninteresting), then the final quarter is also action
Characters... Angela is good when she's in her element, but devolves to a generic ojou-type Tsundere elsewhere. Dingo and Frontier Setter barely have personalities. There's basically no supporting cast
The setting is kind of interesting, but doesn't really get explored
Thematically, it is pushing some ideas, but I don't find them particularly insightful
...I have some difficulty believing Urobuchi wrote this

Well, the choice of using CG was probably not in Butcher Gen's hands, ditto for the pacing. I guess that's more on the director's side (although it's the guy behind Fullmetal Alchemist, so don't know how that went wrong).
As for the rest...I don't know much about writing but it is my understanding that "Story" and "Script" are different. If that's the case, is it possible Gen was involved with the "Story" and someone else botched the "Script"? Because the rest all sound like script issues. Of course, if I'm wrong, then it would be the first thing I've heard people dislike that was actually written by Gen (as opposed to shows that just have his name attached to scoot by on his popularity).
If I knew how I know everything I know, I'd only be able to know half as much because my brain would be clogged up with where I know it fromStill no tv trope page? Kinda want to know how it went since I wasn't able to watch it.
There's reviews across the net, and you should be to find the movie itself via Perfectly Legal Means

Just watched this. It was solid and enjoyable, but it felt more like a concept than an actual full-length film. There wasn't really enough worldbuilding anywhere to make the conflict truly compelling. It would work wonderfully as a prologue to a longer work, but they've unfortunately limited their options in that regard.
Rie as the voice for Angelina actually worked out surprisingly well, especially once you remember that she spends most of the movie in her immature, bratty 16-year-old girl form. Dingo could have used more development, but he worked well even as a fairly static character.
So Aniplex USA is releasing the film on Blu-Ray June 5
Complete with an English dub as well:
Cast has:
- Wendee Lee as Angela
- Steve Blum as Dingo
- Johnny Yong Bosch as Frontier Setter.
- And Crispin Freeman
Steve Blum as Dingo? AHAHAHAHA. Imagining him using his Cyrus/Spike voice now.
Best part is our two leads literally are Spike and Faye
And Vash and Alucard are also there.
Deceptive Airing Poster◊.
Kind of amazing how this somehow flew under the radar for the folks here, given who's behind the production. Well, in any case, it aired in theaters on 11/15... then we get a BR rip barely three days later.
In any case, the subs are to be found where to be found. As for the film itself, it's actually much MUCH lighter for something from Urobutchi, but hmm, you get the feeling that this, combined with both the first season of Psycho-Pass and Kamen Rider Gaim, he's trying to say something... Like humanity might not be perfect, but letting go completely of what makes humans human is much MUCH worse.
On the personal side, Rie Kugumiya can't help slipping into her usual voice, ESPECIALLY during the action sequences (where she sounds like Shana). Which makes it weird, as our female lead has HUUUUUUUGE tracts of land this time around...
