I dunno, an escalating fight against the forces of order sounds like quite the challenge...
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Then I want to fight the President of the United States.
Actually, let's make it a super team of composed of the leaders of all five Security Council nations.
Yes, Authority Equals Asskicking is in effect.
Oh my god, a finale where you fight President Obama? Give him awesome kung-fu powers and you've got a day one purchase out of me.
Well, I mean, the makers of this game are probably already on a watchlist, might as well.
I don't talk soft, that's the other guy.The idea now reminds me of that Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombie campaign.
Famous political figures thrusted into action.
More like Metal Wolf Chaos.
So I saw that new trailer.
To avoid stating the obvious, I'll just limit myself to saying two things:
- Environment destruction looks pretty good, although cutting the view only to the level you're on kinda messes up the experience (hey, when I blow up a big-ass building, I want to see it! That was, like, the coolest part of Red Faction Guerrilla!)
- Oh, hey. Flamethrower. I hope the way fire spreads at least works (I'm not hoping for anything on par with Far Cry 2, although it would be a nice surprise).
Also, is it only me who thinks they ripped the title font from Doom?

"what the complete, unabridged, 4k ultra HD fuck with bonus features" - Mark Von LewisAs I walk knee-deep in blood, I know what must be done.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. You know, looking at this, I kind of had an idea to make a slightly more palatable version of this concept.
For the longest time I had this idea to make a supervillain horror game where you play as this Muggle task force that tries to deal with the metahuman threat as best it can. So one of my ideas was to have this guy who could mass mindcontrol people (with your guys wearing protective suits) and fighting you by simply throwing waves and waves of controlled civilians at you (including children) until you ran out of bullets and were killed. If THIS can get sold, you think there would be any chance for my concept to make it? (I don't have the skills for making it, just wondering)
Read this only if you want Brutal Honesty:
I think it's more palatable to play as a proactive villain who decides who to shoot or not, than to play as a good person that's forced by a villain to do horrible things against their will. Hatred fulfills a Romantic escapist fantasy of freedom and agency, of power over one's fate and that of others, petty and destructive though it is. Your concept does the exact opposite, and feels humiliating, heartrending, and just plain misreable.
It might still be an interesting game to play if the story is presented skillfully, like it was in Spec Ops The Line. The point is to move away from gratuitous masochism and into True Art that happens to be Angsty. There has to be catharsis of some sort.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Yes. Great articles, though, even if they would benefit from being less insultingly phrased.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Given that the writer hates Spec Ops: The Line despite its cult-classic status, he'll probably hate Hatred more because it's even more shallow.
Is that supposed to be some sort of indictment? Besides, he doesn't hate it in spite of being a cult classic, he hates it because it's a cult classic, because it's promoted as a groundbreaking revelation despite being nothing of the sort.
Somehow I don't think the game is that clever. I see it as either a bid to gain attention as Angry Joe points out below or the creator genuinely thinks this way, which is far more disturbing. Whatever the story is this has Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy written all over it, a bid to create the most vile and unredemptive...that a word? The most...hateful player character ever, base a game around the Complete Monster.
Now maybe at the end of the game we will be surprised by the story having a positive light or making at least an attempt at an indicement of the nihilist attitude that so far is the whole point. However here are Joe's comments on this Columbine style game.

And my retort.
I gotta agree with you on Hatred, this style of game is a personal pet peeve for me in not only being torture porn and glorifying atrocities like Columbine, it is perhaps the worst example in recent memory of games like Dead Island (which is entertaining,) The Last of Us (a masterpiece,) Last Light (goes too far,) Spec Ops (ditto in directly attacking the player and Conker doing a better job and saying more in a minute long parody,) The Crapsack World of the Doomed Brigade, Jihad Victory, Wrist Slasher IV, basically games that are so dark and depressing they are no fun, they are not enjoyable or make you care to play them. Games like Hatred have a right to exist sure, by the same token I have a right to react to them and my reaction is basically don't feed the troll, they clearly do not have the skill to make a decent game and have to rely on shock value.
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursIt's all a matter of opinion, taste, and values. If you ask Campster or Yahtzee, they'll give a number of fairly important imperfections in The Last Of Us.
SOTL has flaws, no doubt, and the aforelinked article does a good job of pointing them out (although, again, its aggressive, hyperbolic tone hampers it somewhat). But it was a breath of fresh air, for a shooter. FYI, I don't hate shooters; it's just that that style of game doesn't usually satisfy my ludonarrative needs. I loved Mass Effect 2 and Fallout New Vegas, for instance.
As for Hatred, feeding the troll, hype, backlash, and so on... Audience Reactions are part of the work. If anything, I commend Destructive Creations for triggering so much discussion with so little effort.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.So did Klebold and Harris. It might still be mechanically a good game, but content wise, from what we've seen, seems to be akin to presenting...say, Fred's death as masturbation material.
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursWho, who, and who?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I think a better metaphor would be Seltzer and Friedberg.
The Columbine killers who thought they were so cool and so hip and so great to go on their shooting rampage, Hatred seems like it is a celebration of such people and events.
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursMadWorld was an over-the-top sendup of both absurdly brutal video games like Manhunt or Postal and game shows like Takeshi's Castle and American Gladiators. Hatred on the other hand looks like the first Postal with a bad hangover. It's BRÜTAL for the sake of being BRÜTAL, and the creators are convinced that what they're doing has "nevah been dun befo'!"
Yes it was. Almost twenty years ago. You're late to the party. Schmucks.
"what the complete, unabridged, 4k ultra HD fuck with bonus features" - Mark Von LewisContext is important. The game could easily be reworked into The Punisher where he refuses to kill innocents and if he does game over. This on the other hand the whole point is to kill innocent men, women, maybe children, Inthink they want animals and pets as well. Enjoyment?
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursI'll say it again, it's gonna be a great game to blast some Slayer while playing.
I really hope that there are other vile mass murdering characters in this game. The game would get boring quite quickly if there aren't any challenging enemies in it.
