General Kingdom Hearts Fanfiction Thread

So, to cut down on classes I need to write because I think some of them are just Warrior with more flavor (Samurai, Berserker, Parivir, Knight, ect.) so I decided to divide them into several schools and just make Warrior just a catch all term for any combatant that uses physical attacks/melee for main method of attacking instead of magic.

So, here are some of the schools that I came up with:

The Way of the Bushido (Samurai/Parivir)

An old order of warriors that originated in Ivalice who wield long curved blades and heavy oriental styled armor. Almost all of the Bushido serve all high-ranking members of any society as they believe supporting the ruling government is the way to go. They are very secretive about their swordplay techiques to the point where if anyone reveals a little bit of their fighting style, the person will be cast out as a traitor to the order and be called a Ronin. Monks who wish to become a Warrior are strongly encourged (and sometimes even forced) to follow The Way thanks to the some of the Monk temples having connections within the order and in general being easier to set up. The Way hate Mystic Knights due to the percevied perversification of their sword arts. If I were to use D&D alignments, it's main alignment would be Lawful Neutral with the other tolerable alignments being Lawful Good, Lawful Evil, Neutral Good and True Neutral. Any acting member is offically called a Yojimbo.

College of Swords (Warrior or Fencer/Bard)

A bard college that combines inspiring magical ballads with the fighting prowess of a top tier warrior. Basically on paper, they're essentially Kamina from Gurren Lagaan but with magical music instead of Spiral Power. In practice, their effectiveness can vary from bard to bard. And despite the name, Bards who study at this college can wield any weapon that they wish, it's just common misconception. Viera bards who go through this College usually end up training as a Fencer due to their natural dexterity and fragile bodies. The College of Swords is the most popular out of all the bard colleges on Ivalice. Like any class based as a Bard, the alignment should be any non-lawful. A member of the college is called a Blade.

Order of Excalibur (Knights and Paladins)

Another old order of warriors from Ivalice, led by Count Cidolfus Orlandeau or Thunder God Cid, are dedicated to protecting the people and generally being champions to inspire normal people to strive to be the best that they can be. Knights that belong to this order specialize in rending or breaking enemy equipment in addition to normal fighting skills. While anyone can break weapons and armor, only Knights can break Infinity Plus/Minus One Swords and equipment on that level. Some Paladins in the order worship the Eidolan of Light, Alexander. Many White Mages who have altruistic intentions and goals come to this order to train to become Paladins. Count Cid works with the Kingdom of Disney directly to train recruits to become castle guards as well as training anyone who wishes to follow the path of the Paladin or Knight. The alignments being Lawful Good, Neutral Good and Lawful Neutral.

And Berserkers?

I expect that the archetype/stereotype would be Chaotic anything, and then there's this one Lawful Good Berserker who gets annoyed when people don't take him seriously.

No, he'd just lose his ability to Rage.

But in all seriousness, he'd feel deep shame that so many of his people would fall to pillaging villages to eke out a living.

Lawful berserker rage would be Tranquil Fury and thus can or would be able to be controlled by the player.

This thread has largely been used as a launchpad for discussing ideas you guys have for your fics (and there's nothing wrong with that), but I'm curious as to what Kingdom Hearts fics you have read, what kind of fics you've read (e.g. shipping or no shipping), and any recommendations you may have. I've had very little experience reading Kingdom Hearts fics, but none of the ones I have read made for positive experiences.

Beyond that, I've had Remember the Tides recommended to me by a number of people but haven't read it yet, and there was this brief little Inside Out crossover I was directed at recently that was just fifty zillion kinds of awesome. In the tearjerking/heartwarming way, I mean.

And if quests count, there's this totally super-awesome one on Sufficient Velocity starring Kairi post-KHI.

Uh, mostly Kingdom Hearts III fanfics because they were going to be action packed which I loved because I was going through "I love shonen anime!" phase.

I'm still in it but much less tolerant of certain tropes like Idiot Hero.

An Inside Out crossover? What's it called?

Those Lacking Spines is great. It was written between KH2 and Days and is making fun of the fandom as it was then, so it's a bit dated in some ways, but I'm sure it'd still be enjoyable.

Besides that, I've got plenty of recommendations. I think they're mostly one-shots, so that might not be up your alley if you're looking for something longer, but I've definitely found some good ones.

I'd need a little time to pull together a list, though. Give me a few hours and I'll see if I can get around to it.

Those Lacking Spines looks like a Crack Fic, and I only enjoy those when they're shortform. Or when they're web comics like 8-Bit Theater (basically a Crack Fic of Final Fantasy), because the comedy just translates better to me when it has visuals attached.

I wouldn't really call it a crackfic. It's a parody.

I've read the fic's trope page description and it is totally a Crack Fic.

Also, a Crack Fic and a parody fic aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

If it matters, I'm not into reading shipping fics when Kingdom Hearts is concerned. Unless you have some good Roxas/Xion stuff.

I might have one or two Rokushi fics. ;) Thanks for letting me know, though. Are ships OK if they're just in the background, or do you just want genfic?

Also, one thing: I personally disliked A Match Made In Hell despite it being on our fanfic recommendations page last I checked. Granted, I read it a long time ago, but I found some of the humor to be in poor taste and the cases of Alternate Character Interpretation to be extremely jarring. I had serious issues with the way the author wrote Roxas even before Days came out. If you think it might be your type of thing, go for it, but it wasn't mine.

The Inside Out xover I found and liked, after approximately ten seconds of google searching to verify, is At The Core of Being.

Alright, I looked through my favorites on Fanfiction.net and AO3 last week and made a list, but I wanted to refine it a little before posting it and didn't get to it until now.

I've divided them into three categories - one-shots, chaptered fics, and crossovers/AUs. The vast majority are one-shots, though, since I don't always have the patience for long fics.

One-shots:

Time Is Like The Ocean: Birth by Sleep trio after KH3.

Like Breathing: Very short. Basically just Xion feels.

Rescue Me: Another really short one-shot. This one's about Sora towards the end of 3D.

Contemplations: This one's centered around the TWEWY characters in 3D, mostly Joshua. It's set in the KH universe, so I'm putting it here instead of with the crossovers.

One Sky One Destiny: Character study of sorts centered around Kairi and Aqua.

Within His Heart: Involves Roxas, Ven, and Xion after 3D.

that six, this six: Centers around Selphie, Wakka, and Tidus, and ties back into the games they're originally from. Not a crossover, but it helps to have played FFVIII and FFX.

The Meaning of a Feeling: Kinda hard to describe this one, but it's about Ven and Vanitas and it's written beautifully. It's also long for a one-shot, at over 12,000 words.

what traveled the furthest: Days trio finally making it to the beach after KH3. It's tagged as Axel/Roxas/Xion, but it seems platonic, so I'm not sure why.

Reflection: Introspective thing centered on Riku between CoM and KH2.

like bottles holding prayers: Kairi-centric. Set at the same time as 3D.

To Stand the Test of Time: Has to do with the Destiny Islands trio and their parents after KH2.

Chaptered fics:

Stories: A bunch of little scenes from throughout the series. More of a one-shot collection than a single fic.

He Who Saw the Deep: Two-shot, although it seems the second part was written later. First part is about Ven, second part is about Roxas.

Islands Like Glass Towers, The Locked Room, and Home Beyond the Sky: I'm cheating a little here, since the second two are one-shots, but the first one has 12 chapters. All of them have to do with Sora's family - first one is pre-BBS, second one is during KH2, and the last one is post-KH2.

Crossovers and AUs:

Playing for Keeps: TWEWY crossover, written before 3D. This is admittedly not as good as I thought it was when I first read it, but it's still a fun read.. There's a sequel, but it's not as good.

Never Easy: One shot, although it's a long one. Canon-divergent AU where Kairi takes Sora's place after Hollow Bastion.

A Hero and A Key: Zelda crossover. Unfortunately it only has three chapters and hasn't been updated since December of last year, but what's there is pretty good.

OK, that's everything. Hope you find some stuff that you like.

I've written some KH fics too - most notably a crossover with Fullmetal Alchemist - but putting my own fics on this list would be pretty shameless. I have links on my contributor page to my Fanfiction.net and AO3 accounts if you're interested, though. They have all the same stuff except for some of the junk I wrote in high school that's only on FF.net, and I wouldn't recommend that at all.

Would Remedies be able to cure allergy-related things like asthma or bee stings?

I'm also wondering if I should show Chocobos in Ivalice...
