And Watership Down is still considered children material, speaking of what you should expose kids too......

I saw Watership Down as a child. Didn't have a problem with it.

One thing I think that Moral Guardians seem to get wrong a lot of the time is that children shouldn't get scared. This is a rather naive way of thinking seeing as not only is it good for one to get scared (as long as it's within what each individual child can take) but a significant amount of children like to get scared.

Goosebumps and Jumanji scared me when I was a child yet I still watched them. Because they were fun.

[up] It's a bizarre thing, ain't it? Kids just love disturbing stuff. They love dark humor and gross humor. (I oughtta know. I was one!)

As much as some people, even on this very forum, complain that kids shouldn't be watching shows that are disturbing or gross or whatever (or disturbingly gross), the kids are going to keep watching it because they generally aren't that disturbed. (I say this from personal experience; as a kid I was never scared by anything in Courage The Cowardly Dog, for example.)

Besides, kids need to be scared. Otherwise they never learn how to face their fears.

Courage gave me nightmares at least.

There's also The Grim Adventures Of Billy And Mandy if that counts.

[up] It fits under dark humor, which as I said, kids really like.

What do you mean by disturbing? Because I wouldn't want eight-year-olds to watch Saw III or End of Evangelion. I do agree that kids are more resilient than a lot of people give them credit for (and/or a lot of the horror of situations just goes over their heads), but there are still limits.

Whatever you can get away with on a kids' network is probably the highest level of disturbing a kid can take.

Can't say I'm a fan of dark humor, either back then or now.

Dark themes and settings never bothered me though.

I think I've actually become more receptive to Toilet Humor the older I get actually, although I still don't want to see anything explicit related to that.

Funnily enough I've read that Anno intended Evangelion to be aimed at children (though exactly how old i'm not sure). Even the japanese which have more lax standards about this sort of thing found this objectionable.

Detective Conan in japan is suitable for children as well. Despite you know, having murder in every episode.

Not to mention most battle shounen (which to my knowledge target boys 8-15 years of age) have character deaths, oftentimes bloody ones, and they aren't always conveniently undone like in DBZ.

It's pretty telling that a series like One Piece is considered family entertainment in Japan, but when they brought it over 4kids completely butchered all of it to make it something that moral guardians would not object to.

Even more ridiculous is Fullmetal Alchemist being the same in that regard as One Piece. A family show.

Yeah I was initially surprised when I found out Fullmetal Alchemist ran in a shounen magazine. The whole deal with Shou Tucker was exceptionally dark and hit me like a ton of bricks the first time I experienced it.

Never read One Piece but wasn't Ace's death a massive tragedy?

And you'd be surprise about demographics. After all something like K-ON! is seinen, while Attack on Titan is shonen.

[up][up]Honestly, AoT isn't really surprising at all. It has some pretty shonen-y tropes.

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

Yeah, when you read enough manga you can kinda just tell what demographic a given manga falls under because there are certain tropes/ideas/narrative styles that tend to be VERY prevalent in given demographics. For example, after reading actual seinen it's not very surprising (and actually quite noticeable) that Death Note ran in a shounen magazine.

I enjoy how great the Japanese act when voicing a character depending on the anime and the animation. I really love the animation that Studio Ghibli has form its films and speaking of Studio Ghibli. I finally watched Kiki's Delivery Service for the first time, and I really enjoyed the music and scenery for the film. But I also felt sad watching this movie, and remembering it was Phil Hartman's final film role before his tragic murder in 1998. Making the scene where Kiki loses her powers and can no longer hear Jiji talk to her very eerie to watch. The credits especially got me the most, especially the In Memoriam part for Hartman. Please tell me I'm not the only one that felt like this when watching the movie.

So one thing I've noticed that detractors like to bring up is that most female characters in anime always have large eyes. That, and some of the premises (AOT was described as being "boys jumping around to kill giant naked people) they found stupid, and that anime hasn't revolutionized anything.

Thoughts?

My thoughts?

Tell him that among those men trying to kill giant naked people are women too! Women whose eyes aren't any larger than the mens'!

"naked people" is not that accurate when it comes to the titans. they're more like humanoid abominations honestly.

not sure how females having large eyes is a relevant complaint.
