Think this will go better here than the OOTS Rules Thread in which I originally posted.

I was sort of interested in thinking about what the classes an would be for characters in A Song of Ice and Fire- thinking of Thoros of Myr and Melisandre who (especially the former) have a Bad Powers, Good People thing going on:

Thoros is a priest of the god Rh'llor who was initially a priest in name only and known for his drinking and wenching, and being a skilled participant in tournament melees as well as a war hero, and later on, is a member of an outlaw band (despite the religious part, he seems at base a Fighter or some kind of Ranger/Barbarian like Belkar). While not a genius, Thoros is reasonably intelligent, suggesting a pretty high Wisdom/Knowledge score. Thoros's overall personality suggests someone who is True Neutral but with inclinations toward Neutral Good.

As part of his religious observance, Thoros would stare into fire, and of late, began to see visions of the future in the flames (this is ostensibly at least divinely granted, like with the Oracle in OOTS). Now the tricky part. Thoros is known as The Medic of the outlaw band. However, Thoros' actual ability involves raising people from the dead as Revenants, who have their memories and personalities as in life, but Came Back Wrong to some degree. While Thoros doesn't realize this, his powers and those of Melisandre (to follow) seem likely to be powered by Dark Energy.

Now for Melisandre. Melisandre is also a priest(ess) of Rh'llor and has the same prophetic abilities as Thoros. Melisandre is a Well-Intentioned Extremist who wants to save the world, and will sometimes engage in human sacrifice to do magic that will help her cause. She takes no pleasure in this and is really Obliviously Evil and is capable of being reasonable/sympathetic Everything about her suggests someone who is Lawful Evil but bordering on Lawful Neutral.

In terms of her other powers, Melisandre is implied to be centuries old and possibly undead, which is concealed by a glamour (she can also cast glamours on other people using an item that belongs to whoever they are impersonating). She either doesn't eat or sleep, but seems to be capable of either if so inclined. There are suggestions of her having a Soul Jar in the form of a ruby she wears, suggesting a lich, but it might also be a magical artifact along the lines of the crimson mantle worn by Redcloak in Order Of The Stick.

Melisandre's main ability is Deus Sex Machina. She will have sex with someone, draining their life energy, and can then give birth to a "shadow baby", which looks like a shadow of that person and can be sent on assassination missions.

Are you interested in simulating these abilities as best as possible in Core, or do you want an exhaustive attempt to match them to obscure prestige classes etc.? I might be able to help with the first, but I don't own nearly enough supplements to brave the second... :(

Following on from the above, I'd give Thoros a couple of levels of ranger and the rest in cleric (though you could easily make the case for him being full cleric).

Mel would be full cleric with an undead template of some sort (if you buy that she's actually older than she looks).
