On TV Tropes, it's very common for editors to misuse appearance tropes, as well as tropes whose names make them sound like they could be appearance tropes.
Meaningful Appearance tropes are often misused in ways that overlook the "Meaningful" aspect, resulting in Zero Context Examples and misuse in the form of examples that have no meaning even if the tropes themselves are not People Sit on Chairs.
The Appearance Tropes Cleanup sandbox covers tropes with potential issues. Tropes that simply require cleanup will go through this thread, while tropes that require more significant action will have to go through the Trope Repair Shop.
April 2, 2023 update: This thread is no longer for making changes to tropes, and was brought back from the Projects Morgue solely for cleanup. Making changes to tropes is still a job for the Trope Repair Shop.

Nothing?
Are you suggesting that we cut Windows of the Soul?
Umm my first thought would be to split it into 2 tropes, pick one specific type or send it to YKTTW.
Split into what?
Macron's notes@Memers: Did you not check the discussion that starts from the post that I've linked to?

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.soo don't want this to die for the the third time. Not sure if Windows To The Soul should be merged or kept and rewritten (Windows of the Soul probably needs work too). At the very least one of them needs to be renamed.

Macron's notesPerhaps a merge-rename-do nothing crowner on the first?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanOh yes on the rename thing, no if ands or buts about it those trope names are way WAY too close to each other.
Regardless of anything else, one (or both) of them definitely needs a name change. Personally, I'd like to cut or merge Windows To The Soul because so much of it is either a list of other tropes or tied up in Elemental Eye Colors.
Its a supertrope to that one.
Windows To The Soul should just be like Color-Coded Eyes, Windows of the Soul can either keep it's name, or be changed to something akin to Emotion Through The Eyes
I think they're both pretty valid tropes. But the important thing about Color-Coded Eyes should be that while there are general patterns, a work may also define what eye colors mean in their own context specifically. That way we don't get stuck in, "purple has to mean magic because the trope page says so, so every character with purple eyes in any work that ever does anything remarkable goes here" , and becomes a more general, "this work does a lot of symbolism through eye color, and this is how it works in this show - purple eyes mean magic and these characters have it"; or "this work doesn't do symbolism through eye color, so even though this character has purple eyes, it doesn't mean anything and is not a trope here"
Emotion Through The Eyes is already worded to make a point that its more obvious in literature when the author spends time describing eyes or eye movements, which can also be done through close ups, or other kinds of reveals in visual mediums.

I second Emotions through the eyes.
The big thing with purple specifically is its an unnatural eye color, it cant exist in the real world and is completely intentional inclusion. Being an unnatural color is what makes them
There are also established tropes in character design such as Green-Eyed Redhead and Phenotype Stereotype. The latter's blue eyes a big sign since less than .5% of Japanese without some mixed ancestor have blue eyes and those are mostly thanks to Polyomavirus type A.
But really I think Windows of the Soul is the big issue here not Windows To The Soul, its just so impossibly general that its not a trope. like I said at the top of the page it could go well as 2 different tropes or supertropes.
I guess the options for Windows To The Soul are:
- Rename
- Rename and rewrite
- Merge into a broader trope/supertrope
- Cut
- Do nothing (if we do that, then Windows of the Soul would need to be renamed instead)
Sone things look like they might to th other trope. But last time nothing happened because there wasnt a strong enough consensus to do anything on the crowner. So hopefully we can come up with something this time.
Macron's notes@ Memers there's more to tropes than what it means in anime.
Nothing I said really is specific to anime just non-live action stuff like games, comics/manga and animation.
In non-live action media things are meaningful cause its 100% intentional that X person is drawn that way, especially when it comes to unnatural eye colors like purple or red and racial stereotypes like Phenotype Stereotype and such.
There just might be exclusive meanings in anime compared to elsewhere. Going back to my earlier post
- Purple is mysterious, magical, playful and is a sign that they are important since it’s very very rarely used on a minor characters being such an unnatural eye color. Usually not villainous but rather trolly.
- Yellow are cunning and clever, usually have some kind of to cat or fox motif. [1] Turquoise is the other cat and fox color if they have blonde hair.
- Brown/Gray heavy emphasis on “normal” or “ordinary” characters, not really trope worthy unless they are seriously pushing The Generic Guy.
- Red is demonic, yokai, monster, or otherworldly. Not always a ‘take warning’ thing though as not all demonic origins are bad. IE Fallen Angel Flonne in Disgaea who got red eyes when she ‘fell’ from being a normal angel yet she is the same old Love Freak.

which i think is fine for a rewrite to acknowledge.
But it should also note that meanings can be show specific, and just having the color may not automatically give you the 'general' meaning.
I like what acrobox is saying in post # 1987. Something like that would make the two tropes clearly distinct and wouldn't lock them into meaning that is only relevant in comparison to real life. A given author/artist/director etc. could decide to make purple eyes the common color and have the impossible/magical/etc. eye color be brown, or red or whatever.
Purple Eyes does have its own trope page but could use a name to denote the "specialness". Color-Coded Eyes might have merit for all meanings that arent emotion. Could help us fix the eye color tropes.
Time for crowner?
Macron's notesWe have Elemental Eye Colors and Red Eyes, Take Warning as well which covers some of that however it doesn’t cover all of it hence why a supertrope akin to the Youkai page for the rest is needed, something Windows To The Soul is trying to be but missing the mark.
Yellow and red mostly though. Brown/Grey only really if they mixed in with the freaks with crazy eye and hair colors as a sign ‘this guy is normal, others are not.’.

^^ crowner is cool with me
Are the options that we decided on? If we decide on a merge or a rewrite, will that come after?
What To Do With Windows To The Soul. •Rename •Rename and rewrite • Merge into a broader trope/supertrope • Cut • Do nothing (if we do that, then Windows of the Soul would need to be renamed instead)
Oh those are just options I saw suggested on the thread. Should have asked if those are the ones that were wanted. After a merge or rewrite would be example/wick cleaning I think.
Macron's notesI'm sorry. I meant deciding on the specifics of the merge or the rewrite, such as a draft of what the rewrite would look like.
I like that one but the trope itself needs work.
Honestly I don't see much of a trope in Windows of the Soul as it is written. Its written 'eyes show emotion' and thats it, If it was excessive descriptions of their eyes, common in romance stories, or extreme closeups of Dull Eyes of Unhappiness then sure.
Or even the other extreme, subtle eye actions that are not focused on at all but are clues to something being wrong, like in Myriad Colors Phantom World every phantom has 2 colors in their eyes [1]◊ [2], its never mentioned at all in the work but you can see it if you look closely.
Marq FJA We could take it to Trope Talk if ya want on the side but what is wrong with Hot-Blooded Sideburns? aside from the fact that it should be named Go Nagai Sideburns. Its the signature style of Go Nagai, one of if not the most important creators in anime, for his hot blooded main characters in framing their face. It has been copied endlessly to be one of the stereotypes of anime and ending up knowingly or unknowingly in animesque works.
Even his female characters like Cutey Honey got it [3]◊ and that has carried over into works by other artists such as all of Kiyohiko Azuma's tomboys.
I see a bit of misuse of long sidelocks and some sideburn like hair covering where the ears would be on a Little Bit Beastly character but thats it. The latter there would be a different trope of its own.
