Our Next Feature Presentation: The Stuff (10/12)

Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

Some of these are associated with particular movies, but others, like Tre Day, are not. What will likely be done on those days? Or the other days inbetween?

Like I said, we'd be celebrating the absolute best of what represents our culture.

I don't want to bring up specific titles that I already have in mind right here, as I'd like save quite a few surprises, but I will have a list for you that I will share in private by the end of the week.

Okay, to butt in and say something completely unrelated...

I'd like to ask if we could riff Frank Zappa's Baby Snakes (link) in the probably distant future. If we can't, no pressure.

[up][up]I only took a glance at the timeline. Is the complete work really THAT long, or is, like, the second half of that tape blank filler? Anything that long would have to take up a night's entire playlist, if it really is that long. That's my only concern about this suggestion, though.

Anyway, we'll be rolling out Superhuman Samurai SyberSquad and Gamesmaster real quick.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we'll check out some mindless action and laughable dialog in Private Wars.

...yes, it is that long.

For those who didn't click the link, the Baby Snakes closes in on just under 3 hours. Make of that what you will.

"Still, a tarantula that contains lava and breathes fire?"

Stole it from Dark Souls. Quelaag isn't specifically a tarantula, but still, close enough.

Also, I really should've shown up tonight instead of taking a nap. :| I really should've shown up.

What'd Private Wars get?

It got a ★★, but under the current number of voters, it got the highest ★★ it could get.

[up]What that means is a simple +1 voting majority for a slightly higher rating isn't enough to push a voting average over that 0.6 threshold. Private Wars really was pretty fun, though. I think it deserved better.

Anyway, tonight we got some nonsensical sci-fi action. IMDb roundly summarizes it as, "Terrorists with an indestructible robot take over a high-rise hospital in order to kidnap the president's daughter."

In other words, "Die Hard in a high-rise hospital", and by "Die Hard" I am, of course, referring to Die Hard Arcade.

Keep your eyes peeled for that evil South African diplomat from Lethal Weapon 2/Mentor figure to Emilio Estevez in The Mighty Ducks/King Arthur from A Kid in King Arthur's Court.

I give you... Project Shadowchaser

I'd like to leave a suggestion: Modesty Blaise, the infamous live-action film adaptation of the long-running comic strip written by Peter O'Donnell.

It stars Monica Vitti, Terence Stamp and Dirk Bogarde. Trailer here.

See you guys Friday.

[up][up]Oh, wow, my only real familiarity with that title is Vincent Vega's reading material on the toilet. I never knew there was a movie. Remind me of this again on Friday, in case I forget.

[up]I remember Cr1TiKaL telling us all about that one.

Well, pre-emptively, I can't make it tonight because the parents are taking me to a different movie. Have fun without me (which I know isn't hard).

So, first off, more of Retsuparae struggling through that guilty pleasure of mine, Sonic 2006. Then some more Legends of the Hidden Temple.

Then, at 8 PM EST, it's Die Hard in a Hospital. Wait, I mean, Die Hard Arcade: The Movie'. Sorry, it's actually Project Shadowcaster, where The President's Daughter is imperiled yet again!

Come on in!

Well, that cheese with Duke Nukem's dad playing an evil android (who mysteriously starts acting more robot-like only after it's revealed that he's an android) got a ★★★ from us.

Tomorrow night, we get The Rock in a cheesy family adventure based on a Jules Verne novel.

[up]But how did the movie end (I know that character was an android, and I'm sure I could take an accurate guess as to the rest, but I wanna hear about it)? Hate to had to miss out on the conclusion, but I would've voted [awesome][awesome][awesome] on what I had already seen, anyway. Happy to learn I wasn't alone.

And I didn't realize tomorrow's movie features The Rock.

Honestly, I was a bit confused with how things were playing out near the end. The ending appeared to be a bit bittersweet, but I was a bit lost on the details. Sorry. I wish I could describe it.

It did go on to have more of those goofy robot noises (that he somehow didn't make before the audience knew he was an android), and more of that "android who somehow has human-like desires" sci-fi silliness, but I'm having a hard time remembering more specific details. I remember something funny happened right after you left, but I don't even remember what.

I'll have to find the time to watch that last 15-minutes on my own. I really did enjoy that.

Anyway, while I'm gonna have other plans tonight, we'll be setting up an evening here with Michael Caine, Luis Guzman, Vanessa Hudgens, Josh Hutcherson, and Dwayne Johnsonnote  in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Fun Fact: This movie is presented as a sequel to a loose adaptation of Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth, but Verne originally wrote The Mysterious Island as a sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Well, there you have it...

I can say with confidence that even with the sheer corniness of tonight's movie, it's still a better version that we'll enjoy more.

One thing I noticed is that it follows the "Save the Cat" formula to a tee.

Your wish is my command. The film was Mr. Holmes (the modern one with Ian McKellen). I don't think it was my cup of teabut... , but I'm sure someone can find enjoyment in it.

Re: Android movie: Turned out the guy they unfroze wasn't an architect, but an ex-football player. Prez's daughter, immediately after being rescued by our protag (BTW, the black guy from the beginning didn't show up again until the... denouement, I think you'd call it, and never got to be useful), demands to be able to change her clothes from pants and real shoes to a thin dress and heels.
She is later seen throwing one of the protag's grenades without taking the pin out first.
The worst kind of DID isn't one with a shitty AI; it's one who thinks she's an action girl and very, very much isn't. Everything about her was annoying to watch from there.

And also the 'bot's "creator" shows up, takes command of the good guys, abruptly turns out to be evil, has a confusing conversation with the 'bot, invents something to kill the bot with, then eventually shows up and kills Violet Berlin with it instead and tries to side with the bot, which... I kinda forget how that turns out and what happens to him.
And yeah, it just kinda goes predictably from there.

EDIT: Aforementioned DID follows up her fashion statement by trying to impress the protag with her combat usefulness, listing a whole shitton of things you'd expect a spoiled rich kid to try once and give up on immediately, including tennis, swimming, fencing, uh, track, and lots of other things that aren't remotely related to combat.
