Encountered pretty promising new manga (yeah still just one chapter): The wrong way to use healing magic.

Classic isekai settings. Three people get summoned one is here by chance. MC got affinity with healing magic. After that's is revealed whole castle go full panic mode and for his own sake they try hide him, because if she learn there is someone with such talent there nothing can save him from being recruited into "rescue squad" and forced going through Training from Hell even strongest of knights can't endure. Healers are always targeted first and lack in offensive department as well, that's why they need to be toughest guys on battlefield. Ability heal their self helps a lot apparently.

Yeah don't expect any fragile clerics here

Just binged Imawa no Kuni no Arisu ("Alice in Borderland"). That was one heck of a mindscrew, and I'm not entirely sure what went down at the very end, but it was an engaging read.

[up] I'm now imagining Alice in Borderlands.

Does anybody remember offhand the series about scientists trying to uncover the mysteries of love via the Scientific Method?

EDIT: Found it. Not as far back as I thought it was. Series I was asking for was Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumeishitemita (Science has fallen in love, so we tried to prove it)

[up][up] An awesome blend of survival and death game manga, and with considerably more character development than most of its contemporaries.

Need more survival/death game manga in my life overall.

New chapter out for Romsen Saga… Though just a bonus chap, alas. Gustav is falling to the dark side. I also suspect Chaos Bandiera to be related to the king of Satan's Secretary, somehow.

Alice in Murderland has been eyeing at me for a while now, but I've never tried it out. It's one of those series I'm constantly thinking I should read but never get around to, along with Aku no Hana and ERASED.

As for more obscure works, I stumbled upon Gojikanme no Sensou ("The War in the Fifth Period"). Futami Saku is a middle school student living with his childhood friend Miyako on a small remote island, far from the war that the country has been fighting for years. There's also Shinokawa Reina, an (initially) Emotionless Girl girl who had to run away from Tokyo after her school was bombed to ashes.

Life is going by... until the war does draw near to them. Thus one day, it is decided that the students will have to participate to the war effort, and so every friday during the fifth period, one student is picked and sent to the battlefield for a couple of hours. Only two students in the class are exempted: Saku and Miyako, without knowing why. And the first student sent there is none other than Reina. Oh, and the war is against aliens.

Having read the first volume (out of 4) I have mixed feelings about this series. It seems a bit in-your-face in its execution, but it feels very sweet and genuine in the emotions it conveys. The boring comfort of daily life, the fear of seeing war suddenly at your doorstep, the desperation that leads to seemingly absurd measures, and the relief to come back alive to taste a delicious meal… I wouldn't call it a masterpiece yet, but it's a little hidden gem for sure. I'll definitely read it to the end. Some aspects remind me of Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction, though not nearly as weird or tongue-in-cheek.

On my current reading list (for what it's worth): some fluff.

  • Ninja Shinobu-san no Junjou (tl: "The ninja Shinobu's pure feelings"?) Basically, Slice of Life in an average high school with the usual nice guy protagonist and a love interest (Shinobu) who is most definitely not a ninja.
  • Sheriff Evans' Lies: Sheriff Elmore Evans became the fastest gun in the West for one reason only: to be popular with women. Unfortunately, the only guidance he has in this comes from the (usually misapplied) words of his father. Stupid romcom hijinks ensue.

I guess I should probably start on Kaguya wants to be confessed to.

[up] That Sheriff Evans is quite funny imho. Dito for Ninja Shinobu-san no Junjou.

Edit: One manga I found a while ago:

KONYA WA TSUKI GA KIREI DESU GA,

The premise is that there is an affliction that makes people bloodthirsty, with the urge to kill the most important person in their life (they also end up killing others) while granting them some sort of special ability that makes them even more dangerous. The protagonist is in love with his childhood friend, but becomes infected and now must try to control his urge to kill her, while using his newfound power to protect her from others who have the same affliction. The manga is very fond of cliffhangers, but there are already 12 chapters so it is not as bad as it used to be (it was very frustrating that there were no new releases after chapter 3 for some time, that is btw. how you end a chapter on a dark note).

Most of the manga I read are pretty well-known, but as I've mentioned in other places I'm a big fan of Mohiro Kitoh. My favorite works by him are Narutaru and Bokurano, but the one I'm reading right now is Futago no Teikoku. It's a really bizarre series, set in steampunk fantasy version of the 1930s with flying battleships and "sky containers" that can teleport objects. The protagonist are a boy whose people were nearly killed off by the Kou Empire (the equivalent of Imperial Japan in this world) and a girl cursed to kill anyone who touches her. If you're into weird, offbeat fantasy settings or alternate history with a few supernatural elements, this is for you.

Tokiwa Kitareri!!: Written by Matsuena Syun (History of Strongest Disciple). Main protagonist Tokiwa like write web novel and it turns out that his only reader is super advanced robot who move in to live in his house. Crisis Crossover shenanigans ensues when he has to team with Ninja and Magician from authors one shots published before to save world. Despite being pretty established Long Runner seems it's pretty unknown outside Japan, which is shame as it's great.

[up][up] I was so engrossed with Bokurano when I was a kid, I'd consider it a formative experience. Man, I feel like reading it again.

[up] Tokiwa Kitareri has some pretty good action scenes, but honestly I'd prefer more Kenichi, now that was the good stuff.

Yo, s'been a while. Was running out of material, so I had to take to 4chan to find some new stuff.

Anitomo: The story of a young couple whose combined total experience with romance equals zilch. The girl has always been old-fashioned, so she finds herself befuddled over conceptions of love. This only gets worse when she hears her older brother's friend admit that he's crushing on her from the other side of her bedroom wall (her room's got shitty acoustics). From that blossoms a relationship between two huge virgins, and a (sadist) older brother on the side playing wingbro.

Kine-san no 1-ri de Cinema (I Love Cinema, I Am Lonely): An office lady grew up subsiding on Hollywood action movies, but her tastes as a movie buff forced her to live a life of loneliness and isolation well into adulthood. She now hides her desperation for companionship behind a professional and fashionable mask with the cynical mindset of a social reject, but her prayers seems to be answered when a fellow office lady walks up to her doorstep and asks for a place to stay. Except, this person is completely ignorant of movies in general... Well, at least she finally has somebody she can watch her films with.

Nomi Joshi: A yonkoma about Hard Drinking Party Girls enjoying liquors and various foods that pairs well with alcohol after a hard day of work, which can mean pretty much anything so long as you have the appropriate booze. Very comfortable and lovingly details tastes and aromas. Beergasm galore.

Kawaii Joushi o Komasaretai: Another yonkoma. The 31-year-old boss lived a content life as a bachelorette, only to one day wake up in bed next to her insubordinate subordinate. Although a known womanizer, he's actually done nothing to her, merely following the demands of her very drunk self. Still, she's never experienced love before, so perhaps they can make a relationship work out.

Taisho Wotome Otogibanashi: Set in 1910's Japan, the son of a wealthy family is all but disowned after a car crash took his mother and his writing hand, and is privately tucked away into a distant mansion so as not to be an embarrassment. News that his cold father bought a bride to play caretaker for him did nothing to alleviate his depression. However, the girl he's been arranged to marry is the sweetest thing in existence, determined to make the most out of her situation, and capable of seeing the good in him. With time, he comes around and feels love again, all thanks to her influence.

Kenichi was a very good series for the most part, although I felt that the quality fell down somewhat after the Tidat arc.

Tokiwa Kitareri was pretty good from what I've read of it, and I like the Crisis Crossover thing it has going on. Bit of a scheme that it's not translated anymore.

Not a manga, but an anime:

Mahoujin Guru Guru (2017) - Originally a 90's anime, it's a rapid-fire comedy and Affectionate Parody of JRPG's following the story of Nike and Kukuri as they set out to fight the Demon King... much to Nike's reluctance. The remake harkens back to such an age by imitating techniques and conventions commonly used in anime comedies during the era. Very nostalgic.

Big ups to Mr. Cheffailure: Kine-san is the realest thing. It's adorable.

Fallen Angels Scans are back at it. It's been awhile, but Baby Steps is getting chapters translated again.

It's a great tragedy the anime never picked up in popularity, because Baby Steps is sublime.

Just finished a Chiho Saito manga named First Girl. It's about a girl named Miu Mito, whose mother is a simple barmaid who does tango, with Miu herself knowing it too. However, the bar isn't doing well, to the point Miu, aged seventeen, is desperately trying to hand out flyers to get customers. She then runs into a man from a South American Banana Republic named Leon Rosas.

Miu and Leon then end up dancing a tango together. Afterwards, Miu comes home, only to hear that her mother sold her into a marriage to a certain man. The man in question comes for Miu, and it's Leon.

Leon then takes Miu back with him to his home country, and despite initial opposition to the idea, Miu falls in love with him. However, a revolution strikes the country, with Leon's entire family slaughtered. The reason for the revolution is that the Rosas family are accused of really running the country from the shadows. Leon and Miu end up separated in the midst of this chaos.

If it means seeing each other again, Miu and Leon will end up tangled with the consequences of revolutions, drug dealing, tango dancing, and love triangles.

I'm reading a yuri manga called Bright and Cheery Amnesia by Tamamusi. The premise is that a woman named Arisa has amnesia and is trying to reconnect with her girlfriend Mari. It's very light-hearted, especially since the very first thing Arisa does when she wakes up from her...coma?...is fall in love with Mari at first sight all over again.

Some of the comedy comes from the hints of what Arisa was like before her amnesia. The most prominent thing you learn about her at the end of the first chapter is that she is the one that usually initiated their sexual encounters and future chapters reinforce that she was quite the lustful woman when it came to her girlfriend.

Yeah, it's been mentioned here already at least once (by yours truly). So funny and heartwarming at the same time. I do wonder, though, if Arisa from 3 years ago was this super-embarrassed about sex (to the point that even when she initially musters the resolve to kiss Mari, she ultimately loses her courage every single time), then how did she end up becoming the dominant partner in the couple's love life?

…Maybe I'll give it a try. surprised Sounds like a cute story.

In the "…wut?" department we have Salman, the story of a guy who masturbated in a river and accidentally gave birth to a fishman. It's by the author of Virgin Dog Revolution, where dogs rise and rebel against humans, led by a virgin dog-man.

I haven't read either, cause they're pretty hard to find, but they sound… interesting.

Watched the first three episodes of Tsurezure Children and it's been great. Of course, my favorites established their relationships relatively quickly and have an interesting dynamic (Akagi and Kaji, Chiaki and Kana). For individual characters, I do like Minugawa and Sasahara.

This is probably one of the few times I wish a <22 minute short anime were full 22-24 minute episodes because there's a lot of romances.

Something a little different: Yomawari Sensei (Night Watch Teacher). It's based on the accounts of Osamu Mizutani and his experiences in working with Japan's troubled youth - drug and sexual abuse, bullying, self-harm and suicide, etc. - and it's a very candid look at the problems they face, especially in societies where open discussion of these topics is discouraged. It does tend a little towards the melodramatic (mainly in the short notes from the author at the end of each chapter), but given the weight of these cases, I don't blame him at all. And don't expect happy endings.

Sobering.
