The two boss fights at the end of Chapter Three in Final Fantasy Tactics definitely qualify.

The first is a two-stage battle against Wiegraf where you start the battle as Ramza going solo against Wiegraf. Wiegraf has excellent speed, a ton of HP, and hits like a truck—likely far more than Ramza can do in a single turn if he's not a Glass Cannon or Squishy Wizard. The only feasable way to win the battle is to use several of the game's Game-Breaker abilities and/or exploit the boss's AI and his most powerful attack's poor programming.

Once you knock the boss down to low health, Wiegraf transforms into one of the Lucavi, Veilus. Ramza's reinforcements arrive, but so do the reinforcements of the Lucavi demon. Ramza starts out injured from the previous battle, which doesn't help considering that Veilus is easily the strongest Lucavi fight in comparison to what your party's power should be in the entire game. (Later bosses are stronger, but at that point you can have several party members who utterly curb-stomp even the final boss.)

The second boss battle pits you against only three enemies—Elmdor and two Assassins, a unique enemy Job. In order to win the battle, you must keep the Guest ally alive and inflict enough damage on one of the enemies. Sounds simple? Hell no. All three of the enemies you face have exceptionally high speed. One is practically invincible to standard attacks, and the other two have abilities that can inflict guaranteed Stop from a distance or instant death up-close. All three are capable of inflicting massive amounts of damage as well. If you don't have a character who's fast enough to act before the Assassins (or you don't trick the idiotic AI), you will enter the battle only to get a Game Over before you've even had a chance to act.

The cherry on the cake? These are the second and third parts of a set of three sequential battles. The first isn't even particularly challenging. You're given absolutely no indication that once you step on the area, you will not be able to leave until you've finished all of the battles. And you can save immediately before the second and third battles. Don't have any way to defeat either of the battles? Only kept one save? Enjoy starting a new game, because luck ain't gonna bail you out. This is the game that drove me to make multiple saves for every game I played, because it was hard enough on my first playthrough only to get utterly screwed by an overpowered boss that I couldn't escape from. *

As much as I love the game, the Gohma Squashers from Asuras Wrath are arguably the worst parts of the game. Each time one is fought, it just keeps going on and on, and feels like filler not like something out of an anime, especially the second one fought.

Then again, the fact that it basically is an interactive anime means it makes sense.

Still rather stupid mini bosses, though.

[up] As someone who foolishly thought he could breeze his way through Score Attack mode in Arcana Heart 3, I can vouch for this. Parace L'Sia = Mildred Avalon + steroids + more steroids.

I hope you get tiny bits of eggshell in all your omelettes for the rest of your life!

Anyone remember Facade from Link's Awakening? He isn't really a "hard" boss, much the opposite actually, but he's definitely badly designed. He does basically nothing after his initial tile-throwing shenanigan except spawn holes on the ground which give like, a day to step out of the way before they open up. You can even step on his face without sustaining any damage.

Though aesthetically, he was a cool boss. I'll give him that much credit.

Ninja Gaiden 3 had the derpsaur. It was a cloned, genetically altered and cybernetically enhanced T-Rex, which sounds cool. But it can kill you in one or two hits, and take forever to injure. And the fact that Ninja Gaiden 3 lacks health bars on the bosses basically means you might never feel like you're hurting it. And how do you hurt it? You sit in a corner, watch the thing walk back and forth, then watch it fall over. Then you go hit it. After awhile it... Grows metallic skin for no reason. Then the exact same pattern happens only now you can only hit it in the face. So then a cutscene happens (With one of those oh so beloved Quicktime Events) and you're all happy because it's finally dead but NOPE HERE IT COMES AGAIN FOR ROUND TWO.

Did I mention it kills you in one hit and has TONS of HP!? I did get hit, and killed, several times. But it wasn't because I wasn't skilled. It was because I was really, really bored and frustrated so I took unnecessary risks to try and finish the damn thing off slightly quicker.

Seath. Ok, simply beating him ain't hard, what's bad about him is cutting his tail, which you need to do if you want all achievements.

The tail has a fair amount of HP and the part you need to hit to actually cut it is really small, plus it moves around quite a bit. It takes an hour to circle around Seath to get behind him because of his 2 smaller tails, and he can turn fast enough to always face you anyway. Plus, for some reason, Seath likes to hang in the smallest part of the room, where his tail will clip out.

I can still hear the scream of anger Marc left out while trying to cut it.

Who's an angry moth? You are! Yes you are! You're the fuzziest and angriest moth! Original pic.
