Yes, I like that a lot better.

Yeah, let's go with that one. I was thinking it myself just before it was posted.

Ray Gun now has a picture from Star Trek, and the quote fits Disintegrating laser more than the general trope. How about Han Solo's line "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid."?

EDIT: Wait. I think it fits Weapon Of Choice better, since it's Han explaining why he uses a blaster over other weapons. The current quote just recites the trope name a couple times.

I've removed the page quote from Society Marches On. Sorry, didn't know it should've been first discussed here. Anyway, I posted the quote and my reasoning on the trope's Discussion page.

It needs a new page quote now.

rodneyAnonymous Sophisticated as Hell from empty space Since: Aug, 2010

It was:

->"If you're so adored
Where's
your Academy Award?
I'm the smart female heroine
That can't be ignored
The moral of the quarrel
And why I've got you beat:
It's what's
inside that matters
Not the size of yo' feet"

—>—Belle to Cinderella, "Princess Rap Battle"

...with the removal edit reason, "Removed the following page quote, since it has nothing to do with this trope."

It's not that great a page quote, but it does have something to do with the trope: Belle is a more recent Disney princess than Cinderella, and there are more contemporary features of her personality, like being smart, whereas Cinderella is extremely old-fashioned including being not much besides pretty, having her highest aspiration to be "rescued" by a man, and lines like "leave the sewing to the women". I think it was okay, better than nothing.

edit: also the page quote used to be...

->"Come mothers and fathers, throughout the land,
And don't criticize what you can't understand,
Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command,
Your old road is rapidly agin',
Please get out of the new one, if you can't lend your hand,
For the times they are a-changin'."

—>— Bob Dylan, "The Times They Are A-Changin'"

[up]I elaborated on my reasons on the trope's Discussion page:

Removed the following page quote, since it had nothing to do with this trope. This trope is about outdated societal norms in old media depictions of the future. Disney's Cinderella (which is humorously criticized in the quote) wasn't an attempt to depict the future. note

Basically, the trope is about works depicting The Future featuring social standards that became outdated even before that "future" would come. Disney's Cinderella, while definitely "old-fashioned" in certain ways, has nothing to do with flawed depictions of future societies. Dylan's song was better as a quote, since it talks about how the passage of time changes society in general.

I agree with Rjinswand. The trope is

"Many works set in the future presume that people in the future will have the same social mores and values as they do in the present, excepting a few superficial changes in order to facilitate the plot, demonstrate the foreignness/"futureness" of the setting, or satisfy Author Appeal. The assumption is that our future will be essentially the same as our present — bigger, smaller, sleeker, faster, or more automated, but still recognizable as our world. "

Neither BatB or Cinderella were set in the future; the fact that the social expectations changed between the times they were made is not this trope. The Dylan one is a bit better, but only a bit: it's still more about the fact that social expectations have changed between the past and now, not that the future is going to be little different than the present.

Han solo's quote would be a good replacement.

[up]The "second" quote seems to be intended to continue off the first one, and is not only unrelated to the trope, it seems to to try to subvert the previous line. Deleted.

Umbrella Drink Looks like it's going to get a new page image. It could use a better quote, as well. The current ("Hey, cabana boy! My drink needs more umbrellas! What kind of deserted island is this, anyway?", from "Strong Bad Email #148" )is okay, but doesn't really say much about the trope.

I'd like to suggest this, from Tim Mc Graw's song "It felt good on my lips"

She ordered us a drink, it was a purple kind of pink; she said it’s got a shot of a little bit of everything
Mellow yellow umbrella for a fella like me, it was just a bit mellow for me to be seen with
But I took a sip; yeah it felt good on my lips.

Anyone else think the quote on Chronic Backstabbing Disorder isn't terribly indicative of the trope? Certainly not on the chronic part, at least...

There's one I think would fit better, from the series Kaamelott (translated from French, but I tried to keep it as close as possible):

"I have just one question: When are we betraying?"
(beat)
"Wait... do you mean, we're not planning any betrayal? Uh... that's new! I've never tried this before..."
King Loth, Kaamelott

Anyone else like Han's quote for Weapon Of Choice?

[up][up] The existing quote isn't terrible (one could expect a character who really, honestly "doesn't give a damn about anybody but himself" to chronically backstab others), but I do think your proposed one is better.

[up] I'm not wild about it for WOC. It's not bad, but explaining why it's his weapon of choice doesn't really explain what a weapon of choice is.

On the other hand, the current WOC quote is absolute shit, so almost anything would be better.

The quote on Alas, Poor Scrappy really doesn't make any sense to me. Like, who's The Scrappy? The speaker? The speaker's father? Anyway, the quotes page has some really good ones, like The Gokudo one or the first Persona4 one.

[up] Aye. Bad quote. Very bad quote. I'll take a look through the quotes tab.

EDIT: I agree with you. I'm thinking the "Male Student" quote from Persona4, or the Gokudo quote. On balance, I think I like the Persona4 quote. It's slightly less indicative (but still really indicative), but I think it's wittier.

Speaking of Star Wars, we've got disagreement on the quote for the page.

->"There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? The Dark Side... and the Light." vs.: —> The Force is strong in my family. My father has it, I have it, my sister has it. You have that power too.

The arguments for the first are generally "It directly ties into the title of the movie, it's from the original trailer, and the second quote is actually a line from ROTJ that was used in the second trailer."

The arguments for the second are "The first is pure Vagueness Is Coming, and even if it's from ROTJ, the fact they chose to use it shows it presumably ties into the movie."

Personally, I lean towards the first. It does somewhat bother me that to have the quote for the page be originally from another work when it's not directly referencing it.

I do too. It's too bad it's totally Vagueness Is Coming, but that's a work page, and that's from the work, not a different one. Regardless of how appropriate the ROTJ quote is, it's from a different work. That's a big deal, I think.

Also it "fits" the name better.
