The Latin word/phrase for left-handed is often rendered as "sinister". Being left-handed was considered A Bad Thing because It Was Not Normal, and the trope is about that use in fiction.

Personally, I like it. Of course, the first person I knew to be left-handed was the character Harry Anderson on Night Court, and he's a nice if somewhat dingy guy who does magic tricks. smile

The reason Southpaw is common, and yet people may not heard of it, is that its most frequent use is in reference to left-handed pitchers. Those who cross paths with baseball or baseball fans will eventually hear it and may reuse it, while those who don't do baseball may go a long time without hearing it.

Actually I am quite sure the trope (as originally intended) is left-handers being at an advantage in certain competitive situations. It's not about left-handedness treated as bad, or left-handed characters being 'sinister'.

Let's just say and leave it at that.

I used to read stories where one of the traits of the evil guy was he was left-handed. Drove me nuts, especially when it was thumped into the anvil that it was a trait he was evil. Sheesh.

[up] I am pretty sure what you describe is A Sinister Clue, not The Southpaw. Anyway, I just realized there is already an open TRS about The Southpaw.

Let's just say and leave it at that.

The quote in Serious Business is over 20 lines, which is seriously way too long for any page quote.

The Quotes subpage has a lot that are much more concise. I like the Bill Shankly one. The Scrubs quote is also good.

I too, enjoy the Bill Shankly quote. It's up there.

Hey, I made a ykttw for page quote rules. Any input will be very welcome, since it would be relevant here when it launches.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

We already have one. It's at the bottom of Text-Formatting Rules.

[up]More like the middle, and that's only part of what I put in the ykttw.

What do you think of this quote for Mundangerous? The song itself doesn't fit the trope (it's about Disaster Dominoes) but the chorus is quite nice:

It's the little things in life that'll kill you,
It's the little things that'll make you wanna cry.
Oh, you can search for peace of mind,
But the hand of Fate is blind,
It's the little things that'll really do you in.

Do Well, But Not Perfect was recently brought up in Ask The Tropers. It's another self-quote.

The quote on Road Runner vs. Coyote is about the chase, when the trope is about the chase and failing repeatedly.

For a good quote, there could be #9 on the rules the Road Runner cartoons had to follow: "The coyote is always more humiliated than harmed by his failures".

It can go from You Keep Using That Word because it's repeating the trope title practically

[up][up][up]I honestly prefer the second quote to the first

[up][up]The first two lines from the FoxTrot quote in the Quotes page seems like a good replacement.

Panty Fighter has a quote that doesn't really have anything to do with the trope. The only other one I can think of is one for Ikki Tousen, which is almost certainly too long. Posting it anyway, just for context.

  • "The spirit of the legendary San Gokushi Period (panties) is alive and well within a secret (panties) system of High School warriors, skilled (boobs) in varied styles of martial arts and constantly (panties) at war with one another, controlled (ta-tas) by the whims of mysterious group leaders. Each warrior's destiny (crotchshot) is controlled by their sacred bead, a mystical pendant (bewbies) worn as an earring that bestows both the powers (moneyspot) and the fate of the masters from the famous Romance of the Three Kingdoms (poontang) era. Hakufu Sonzaku is one such warrior, the (chacha) reincarnation of Sun Tze, ditzy and childlike, but ( jubblies) harboring a great power that many rival students are after (naughty bits), sending their own superpowered Battle Vixens, like (junk in the trunk) strong, quiet Ryomo, reincarnation of Liu Mang (shakabooms) who only finds freedom in battle, or the sultry, manipulative (beaver) Ryofu, reincarnation of Liu Bu, who suffers (hoo-ha) from a cursed destiny. Through it all, Hakufu's cousin Koukin, reincarnation of (MORE PANTIES) Xiao Yu swears to protect her from all threats, even if he must protect her (baby gots back) from herself. Also, panties. And yes, that's exactly what watching this show is like."
