I could imagine a case where Toplessness from the Back applies to men (there's a few Boys' Love or Otokonoko Genre series where male nipples are treated as extreme Fetish Fuel), but it's highly unlikely. It is possible, however, for males to wear Sexy Backless Outfits, and I didn't know if that might be what it was referring to. If it's not Sexy Backless Outfits, then we should just cut that part as misuse.

Calling someone a pedant is an automatic Insult Backfire. Real pedants will be flattered.I'm going to take it on faith that Degrassi doesn't have a scene involving male characters wearing sexy backless outfits and get rid of that example, but that still leaves "Holly J, Jane, and Fiona at times during Degrassi Takes Manhattan."
No, I think males can count for the original trope as long as the camera focus is right and it's meant to be sensual or sexual rather than just guy with his shirt off.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickThen the description's gonna need some changing.
And it only counts if you see the guy topless from the back, but never from the front, right?
Huh? I thought we decided it's a Discretion Shot to show some nudity while avoiding showing the female breast; how do shirtless guys fit into that?
Calling someone a pedant is an automatic Insult Backfire. Real pedants will be flattered.Same way girls do. I watch enough yaoi to know it happens.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickGotcha (see post 52). But I doubt that many of the examples around here are doing that.
Calling someone a pedant is an automatic Insult Backfire. Real pedants will be flattered.Okay, so it counts for guys, but only when it's done to avoid showing their nipples. I'll edit the description to fit that.
Last batch of stuff I need help with (I guess that if there is stuff that nobody can identify, we should move it to the discussion pages and let Wiki Magic sort it out):
- Series.Pan Am
- Music.Rick Astley
- Film.Scum
- Shantae
- Music.SHINee
- Something Else Also Rises
- Characters.Star Gladiator
- The Incredible Hercules
- Characters. The King Of Fighters The Orochi Saga
- Manga.The Last Uniform
- Characters.Timesplitters
- Wakfu.TropesD-F
- AvatarTheLastAirbender.TropesQ-Z
- Series.Twenty Four
- Characters.WWE Divas
- Characters.X-MenFilmSeries
- Characters.Yosh
- Anime.Zero Zero Nine One
Everything else should either probably stay (like the translation projects) or is a reference to the song.
Calling someone a pedant is an automatic Insult Backfire. Real pedants will be flattered. It's not so much avoiding showing their nipples as showing them only from the back makes the nudity more sexual/sensual because of the implied censorship. Nipples have nothing to do with it.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickSo it's just about seeing their physique from the front?
It's the idea of shooting them from the back, while avoiding shooting them from the front as a sort of censorship. That last bit is the bit most male examples fail at. Most male examples even if they are shown from the back in one shot, get shots from the front as well.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickRight, I think I'm with you (you might want to check the description and make sure you agree with the wording.) I was just wondering if there was a specific reason for avoiding the front, or if it was just a general "the front is sexier, so we won't show it" thing.
I think it's largely the later. It's sort of hard to pin down because it's one of those things that they just do, but rarely lampshade. It seems to most be because what you don't see is hotter than what you do.
EDIT: I tweaked the wording. What do you think?

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI kinda don't like it. Toplessness from the Back is supposed to be a trope for showing nudity while keeping at a PG age rating, while the uses that you are referring to are about tease; as you note, they usually do end up showing you everything, a page or two later. So that doesn't really fit.
Anyone have anything to say about the remaining unsorted wicks?
Calling someone a pedant is an automatic Insult Backfire. Real pedants will be flattered. No, that's not the only reason for the trope. A lot of censorship tropes are also fanservice for people and used as such. Works use tropes for more than one reason. Even in the fanservice versions though, it's generally there to keep things softcore rather than hardcore.
If they do end up showing you everything a page or two later, it's not the trope as per the description.
This trope is does not count if the character is also seen topless from the front.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI moved all the ambiguous examples to their respective discussion pages, the only remaining wicks to Sexy Back are from the translation projects and a wick referencing the actual song. I think this is done.

Crown Description:
Sexy Back is being misused for "backs which are sexy". It is actually about female toplessness, seen only from the back.
I got Always Sunny, Lost, and Buffy "Blood Ties."
I have a question about that Degrassi example. I know that "Emma in the purple dragon episode" is Toplessness from the Back, but it mentions some male characters - do they even count? I'm going to assume that they aren't wearing backless outfits, and only females qualify for Toplessness from the Back, right?
