This thread is dedicated to those who are the opposite of "That Guy", and those who create awesome characters.

Huh, that's odd. The thread title is correctly not WikiWord-ified, except on the Edit page and the title bar...

In our group, there is exactly one Player Character whose name we bother to remember: Geram, the guy who fancies himself our leader.

Geram is actually pretty rotten on the inside. He is unscrupulous, ambitious (too much for his own good) and regards everybody else as a resource to be exploited. The upside is that he trades the setting's omnipresent Fantastic Racism for shameless ableism: If he has a use for you, he'll like you even if you're the lowest scum on Earth. And since several of our characters are misfits with an unusual ability, it's fine by us.

The guy is charismatic enough, so we let him do the talking and call himself our leader if he wants. Hell, that makes him a better figurehead than any of us anyways.

And his player is a jolly good fellow, even if he's sometimes too much of a Pungeon Master.

To Geram!

Hida Tankei, our Legend Of The Five Rings Party Tank. The guy's as big as a shed, able to withstand a lot of punishment and dish even more, and he's hilariously gullible. However, he somehow makes people like him enough to go drinking with him, something of a Big Fun, which is another useful thing about him.

After one-shotting pretty much anything with his giant-ass tetsubo.

In the Legend Of The Five Rings court game I'm playing in (current card game timeline, where the spider clan is an accepted, if not respected, great clan) the GM has managed to make all the the Spider Clan NPCs super sympathetic, while still feeling true to their somewhat dark characterization. They're principled (even if it's Villainous Virtues) and just have really good deep characterization:

  • The Spider Clan monk is an absolutely brutal combatant (with insanely high damage), doing things such as eviscerating a really not nice Yoritomo with his own Kama, but it's basically Pay Evil unto Evil, and he's very protective of peasants. He's basically all the Bushi players favorite NPC, and not just because of his damage output.
  • One of the Spider Clan courtiers provokes everyone into arguing, and generally brings out their worst natures, and thinks honor is stupid, but she does it because she hates hypocrisy and feels like she has been fighting her entire life for just the right to exist.
  • Another Spider courtier (of the Dark Whisper school, who has a Kansen (an evil spirit) bound to her soul). Sexy and seductive, and yet strangely straightforward. She's bargained with dark powers, but is a rather morally complex character. She's friends with my character in kind of a Light Feminine Dark Feminine sort of relationship, and really wants to learn how to open herself up and care about other people (which is hard for her, because her philosophy focuses so much on the self), especially her Phoenix Clan lover. Currently Facing Death With Dignity to save her clan because her Kansen has been captured, and it's gradually siphoning away her Life-Force, but she can't go after it because it could condemn every member of her clan at court if she was discovered. My character is not going to let her die. Even if helping her is technically treason because of the whole Kansen thing.
  • The head Spider at court who's Establishing Character Moment was volunteering to help to my Actual Pacifist character with helping peasants who would be hurt in a war between two other clans. Ruthless and intimidating, and yet actually strangely compassionate. Like the monk, he hates it when innocent people are being hurt, and really wants to react with force of some kind.

From a Vampire The Requiem campaign, the two NPC's my players have liked the most:

Pigeon Piper, an elderly homeless woman with a pet albino pigeon. She was a lovable dotting old grandmother type, who occasionally lapsed mid sentence into angry cursing before flipping right back. It really freaked my players out, that and the fact the albino pigeon seemed undead with it's soulful, unblinking eyes. They actually trusted her, she gave them street gossip and intel on big supernatural threats... all for the low low price of pigeon feed! [lol]

Mimi, who rose from a throwaway ditzy valley girl human receptionist for a quickly-forgotten plot-relevant NPC. Said NPC warned the horndog player not to touch her or feed from her or he'd regret it. He though the NPC was threatening him... but on the night of the hookup, it turns out she was a Hello Kitty obsessed BDSM Queen. She deemed him an adequate slave, he tried to get away, but she forevermore chased him around the city for daring to leave mistress.

"Johny, No!"

We had this homebrew d6 based Zelda system where each party member got a NPC side kick. One of us had an axe wielding maniac named Johny who repeatedly broke discipline, charged the opponent, and murdered everything within arms reach. this guy just could not fail. His catch phrase became "Well you're full of blood. Let's Fix That!"

Current Dark Heresy campaign I'm running has a zealous priest from a feral world, that we've affectionately nicknamed "Conan the Baptist". He's always calling high-tech stuff "land beasts" (an APC), "space whales" (starships), etc. He smashes stuff with him hammer, bow and his words. And he actually preaches before he smites.

He's not even the least subtle member of the party. Crazy savage is learning how to play politics very quickly, though he's not into torture or lying just yet.
