Say, I got a diabolical idea. evil grin

Shinji: History's Mightiest Disciple. Shinji Ikari, tired of being a wimp who gets picked on even by the nerdiest and most bullied of nerds, takes his childhood friend and long-time martial arts enthusiast Asuka's advice and visits the Ryōzanpaku dojo for guidance... and finds himself being roped into a daily regimen of Training from Hell under six master martial artists of questionable mental soundness if not actual sanity. And a steadily constant stream of increasingly stronger enemies either out for his head, for one or more of his friends' or acquiantances' heads, or for one or more of his eccentric masters' heads (metaphorically or literally). And a growing Unwanted Harem. All on top of an eccentric set of parents that he has to deal with every day, to boot.

What do you think?

I didn't manage to get through a whole lot of Kenichi, but I really like Full Contact, so I give you a tentative [tup].

....actually (somewhat hilariously given how Ryuuichi Otowa actually looks) Akito Tenkawa might work better than Shinji for a Full Contact fusionfic.

Also, Marq, I think you'd love the shit out of Full Contact. It's fucking perfect for those mundane AU stories you seem to like coming up with so much.

RE Kenichi: Well, let's put it this way. See Asuka's part in the premise? That was played by one Miu Furinji to Kenichi Shirahama in the original story. This is Miu. That purple outfit under her ripped-up school uniform is her gymnastics/martial arts uniform. No, she is explicitly not wearing anything underneath it. And she's the main Love Interest.

Now try imagining Asuka filling Miu's role to Shinji.

In terms of perspective: I know that Kenichi ran for hundreds of chapters. I got through, perhaps, five or six episodes of the anime. So I at least know who Kenichi and Miu are.

Well, I thought that you were implying that it was a long enough time ago that like with Witchblade, you don't remember the particulars. Thus the reminder, which in hindsight is also useful for anyone here who is not at all familiar with Kenichi, unlike you.

One problem that I'm facing: No idea where to put Rei, Mari, and other EVA characters in the story. Maybe I'll figure it out once I Archive Binge Kenichi and get a feel for the way I want my story to play out, which is certainly not going to be a copy-paste of Kenichi... even though I am abso-positive-lutely certain that Chikage Kushinada (or an expy/ersatz thereof) will feature prominently. Seriously, just... Look at her. So adorable! She's supposed to be on the antagonists' side.

Oh, it has been probably about as long or longer. I certainly couldn't tell you who any of the martial arts masters are, although I could at least recognize most of 'em on sight.

Also, I initially misread that name as Khushrenada. Must be because I spent the last few days working on an extended verion of his theme track.

...Kaiser, would you consider me weird for having had a JRPG-style dream about Shinji/Mana?

Like, with classic JRPG graphics. So, the Shinji figure is going about in The Overworld (a cityscape) and upon entering a certain building just next door to Misato's, there's a cutscene of Mana lying around on a bed in a room somewhere, musing to herself that Shinji promised to wait for her. Then Shinji goes all the way up to the roof, where there is a small-ish shack thing that wasn't visible from the overworld view. He goes in and finds Mana inside, in the same room the cutscene showed (it's Bigger on the Inside - much bigger). She doesn't notice him immediately but for some reason (probably out of surprise, I don't know), he closes the door louder than normal and the noise startles her (read: her figure bolts upright with two exclamation marks above her head). A Beat passes... then she slowly turns towards him with this huge, happy grin. Shinji walks up to her and Mana promptly crash-tackles him in a hug. Can't remember the rest anymore but I seem to recall that they reaffirmed their feelings.

Yes, I actually dreamed this last night. Trippy as fuck. And I have no idea why Mana, after saying in canon that she was going to a different city, ended up in the apartment building right next to Misato's.

And for some reason, it was all in classic JRPG graphics. Like, 8-bit. Complete with overhead view for outside and rotating isometric for inside.

I've never played any JRPGs. The only reason why I know how an 8-bit JRPG even looks like is a thumbnail I've seen on Kaiser's Youtube profile.

Bitch you need to get on that.

I have no idea what you're in reference to, unless you're talking about my LP of Fire Emblem 7. In which case, that's a strategy RPG (more like Super Robot Wars, rather than what I think of as JRPG like Final Fantasy or Mother). Also, FE 7 is GBA, which IIRC would be 16-bit, not 8-bit.

Basically, amita, 8-bit would be NES. If you're thinking more like SNES - which is what I'm thinking you're thinking - then yeah, I think you're thinking more in 16-bit graphics.

And you thought I wasn't going to post any actual prose this month.

"This is Rei Ayanami, in EVA-00. I have visual confirmation on the target. Should I commence the attack?"

Within Central Dogma, Operations Director Misato Katsuragi shook her head. "It pretty much looks like a human, so we might actually be able to communicate with it. Ask it to give up and come quietly, first. If you get an unfavorable response, follow up with a warning shot."

"Understood."

From the upper level, Commander Ikari asked, "Do you honestly expect that an Angel can be reasoned with, Operations Director?"

Her response was harsh. "No, I don't. But since it looks so similar to a person, there's a part of me that questions whether it's really an Angel."

Ritsuko Akagi, head of Technical Division 1, scowled. "Even though it was just giving off a confirmed Blue Pattern a few minutes ago? That isn't like you, Misato."

"I know, I just... if that actually turns out to be a human, one of us, then..." Misato let out a heavy sigh. "I'm a soldier, and I'll do it without hesitation if that's what it comes down to. But killing people was not what I had in mind when I accepted these responsibilities."

Makoto Hyuga, a systems analyst, zoomed in on the enemy from his terminal. "For what it's worth, she looks pretty spooked. If we can communicate with her, we just might be able to avoid bloodshed."

At that moment, EVA-00 fired, and the enemy dodged, before throwing a car at the EVA with her mind.

"...or, maybe not."

Rei's dialogue is bolded here, but in the actual document is underlined, due to being a comm transmission.

... Wait, why is Kaede giving a Blue-pattern signal? Are her vectors supposed to be based on AT Field manipulation in this story, and thus Diclonii are human/Angel hybrids of some sort? (This is similar to some of my EVA story ideas, where superpowered humans and even ancient deities and demigods are justified as a result of unintended "contamination" of the "primordial soup" of Lilith-type LCL with Adam-type LCL, with only a fraction of the human population throughout history actually manifesting the otherwise dormant superpower-giving genetic factors.)

That's been explained previously, both in this thread and, IIRC, in-fic.

Diclonii in this fic are the product of a retrovirus that happened in the aftermath of Second Impact. TL,DR is, Diclonii are sort of like naturally-occurring Nephilim (what Rei is, and maybe part of what Kaworu is). But they have their vectors, instead of the kind of all-purpose AT Field that Angels and EV As are shown to exhibit.

Still puttering away at my ship fic. I was getting monthly chapters out, but that collapsed around the end of February and it's been a few months since I've written everything. I'm currently finishing up chapter 12, which in a best case scenario should be published by the end of May.

I've been making it extremely WAFF-y, to make up for my absence, but I'm going to cut some of it before it waters everything down. I don't want Sweetness-Induced Audience Apathy.

I've decided to give Shinji grey eyes. The manga was the adaptation with the prominent subplot with Rei, so I thought it'd be fitting to have Manga!Shinji being the "canonical" Shinji, so to speak. I'm also introducing Hikari as the owner of a cafe, and Kensuke as a cook/odd jobs guy working there. No romantic subplot though, just hanging out.

I'm kind of interested in a companion piece exploring Shinji and Asuka, but it'd end up more like the Alpha Couple - that is, a hopeless co-dependence between 2 bitter people who hate each other. There's an interesting dynamic that no-one seems to tap without mangling horribly (i.e. choosing a bad guy - why can't they both be deplorable?) if at all, so I kind of want to give it a go.

But I'm not touching another multi-chapter story until A Shared Existence is done. I've spent the last 2 months slacking off, but I want this thing done.

You're right. I wonder where I got grey eyes from.

I kind of want to give him the grey eyes anyway, but I feel like changing his eye color like that would veer my already not-exactly-a-classic fanfiction right off the rails into "OC with a character's name" territory. I guess I'll just give him blue eyes.

Marq, that manga you mentioned to me recently, plus me having watched Oda Nobuna No Yabou last month, gave me an idea while I was on the train today.

Shinji and the girls are all heirs of yakuza clans. Different clans. That are in direct competition with each other. And fate seems to have a strange sense of humor, as they all end up going to the same class.

Hilarity Ensues... or not, considering that any one of them offending another could end up triggering a brutal gang war. Not exactly the typical High School AU, now is it? grin

[up][up] Which manga are you talking abo— Wait, did I mention it here, or in one of our e-mail conversations?

Anyway, your setup reminds me of an actual manga where one or both of the leads are teenaged scions of different yakuza groups. Don't remember the title at the moment, though.

Oh yeah, that one! Heh, the premise is so funny.

... and only now have I made a connection that I should've done long ago: TVT's article on Nisekoi was my first "contact" with it, and yet I had completely forgotten about its premise when I re-"contacted" it again by coming across a set of hilarious motivaitons on Deviant Art, revolving around the fact that the two leads are both tsunderes (and one of those motivationals showing the guy's very un-tsundere behavior during a bout of amnesia, and its hilarious effect on the girl).

I don't think it's really elaborated on, but I think there's a school lecture in one of the show's episodes about how humanity has rebuilt itself to a decent level or something. And there are other NERV offices in America, and more than one Magi. And as shown in End of Evangelion, Japan has a government with a substantial amount of control over the JSSDF. I think it's safe to say that the world of Eva is definitely somewhere in a state of order.

Not to mention in Rebuild, the world's been put back together well enough for the world's nations to sign treaties limiting the amount of EV As kept in use by each country. I'd say the world's doing alright if bureaucracy like that is going on, as opposed to "reform the social care system to adjust for all the Second Impact orphans" or something. So aside from some lacking consumer electronics (i.e. no/few smartphones for the general public) I'd say the world of Evangelion is doing okay. Definitely decent enough for cargo smuggling to be a thing.

Depends. Is it a fused universe with Juushin Liger or Demonbane? Probably not.

Otherwise? Probably yes.

But just because it'd look odd, doesn't mean you shouldn't go for it if there's some kind of practical reason for it.
