An official synopsis has been released, and it sounds like our worst fears and then some are coming true.

Maleficent is the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty. A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

At this point, I think it's no longer a question of whether or not this will suck. It's a question of the degree to which it will suck.

...The fuck.

Why did they feel the need to change everything about the original story?

I have faith.

Of course, this smells like the same sort of idea that was behind Wicked- which I agree with in premise and abhor in execution. So I wait to see how it does before passing judgment.

They're turning one of Disney's best villains into a misguided hero. That's rather obnoxious. And if the script that was being passed around awhile back is correct (which seems more likely now that we have a plot synopsis) there were some rather awkward undertones to Maleficent's interactions with Aurora.

[up][up] For me, it depends on whether they're emulating the book or the musical. If it's like the book, then I can see this thing being possibly watchable. If it's like the musical, then...well...you can guess.

Maybe they can end up doing something interesting with it. They've got a pretty decent cast, after all.

Don't tell me the film's going to make Maleficent a Tragic Villian! I mean, Maleficent is one of the most evil Disney villains!

Writing a story centered around your main antagonist is sort of difficult, because you risk "devillainifying" them. Yes, I just made that word up. What I mean though, is that once an audience has watched a character's life, with all of their personal struggles and trials and tribulations and such, it's more difficult to see the character as the Big Bad. The challenge here is to tell the story of Maleficent's life without making Maleficent even slightly sympathetic. I mean, she's wholly and unapologetically Evil, but more to the point, she's kind of a bitch.

Oh god, why. Why? Why couldn't they just have her mysteriously appear and start wrecking shit, lots of her fucking shit up, kicking ass etc, and then at the end of the movie she's pissed but they beat her back/banish her temporarily. Then she hears that the queen has given birth to a daughter... roll credits.

Oh no, it's simpler than that.

Disney, villains don't have to have an altruistic motive to what they do, and most of them don't. What happened to wrecking havoc out of spite or a lust for power?

[up] Because we've suddenly decided that our villains simply have to be more complex than they seem for some reason.

If they want to do a "Maleficent was actually good" thing like Wicked, then start out that way and have her go through a genuine Face–Heel Turn. And FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY, don't make her go evil because her would-be boyfriend leaves her or something. Fuck that shit.

That's probably what they'll do, though.

Better, don't have her original name be Maleficent. Have that be the name she assumes after taking on all the powers of HELL.

The random ideas that we're tossing around are already better than what they're offering us. That's a good sign.

I'll forgive the devillification if the "invadng army" turns out to be aliens. If you are going to go "meh" at least go balls out with it.

The district nine aliens accidentally invading and exacting vengeance on a magical kingdom rather than real earth thus causing a sorceress to go insane and evil in the process of defeating them? I would watch the shit out of that.

I'd write it, but that would require watching District 9, and I have no tolerance for Body Horror.

One of the reason why Maleficent is THE Disney villain is because she doesn't need a motivation. She is just pure evil. The whole movie is based on symbolism and NOT on character development, and she is supposed to stand for everything bad in our world. The last thing we need is some sort of explanation for her behaviour.
