But this trope isn't Broken Bird, so Haruhi can't apply to it just by being a Broken Bird.
Even before she met Kyon, she wasn't shy, just a misanthrope, but she wasn't afraid to say and do outrageous things.
Yuki is a Kuudere, but Disappearance!Yuki is a textbook example of Dandere.
This is a Fan Speak page. Examples go under Shrinking Violet.
Similar to Dojikko
EDIT: Fan Speak is no longer an Index, I guess we have to go directly to Anime Fan Speak then.

Except that they are not the same trope. The Shrinking Violet is only the "Dan" part of Dandere, that is a bipolarity trope.
That's like if we would use Kuudere as a fanspeak term for Emotionless Girl.

Except the Shrinking Violet always conceals a sweet girl under the shyness. It's part of that trope.
And the "dere" in Dandere doesn't refer to romance (at least not in the common fan usage of the term that I've seen), just that she has a sweet side under the shyness.
Which means it's the same trope.
Believe me we had quite the argument about it back when this page was created. Many of us would have preferred to just make it a redirect.
Seriously. This trope is Shrinking Violet but with a Japanese name. It doesn't need examples.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickWell it is and it isnt. Shrinking Violet and some of what we define as Kuudere is Dandere (and a little gray area in the middle). After reading the two tropes closely.
Dan in Dandere is "unsocial, Silent for the sake of being silent, tacturn, shy." while Kuudere is "acting cold and strict like giving the person the cold shoulder but lacking the abrasiveness of Tsundere" while we define it to include Emotionless Girl s and some The Quiet One s.
The different Yukis in both worlds are Dandere in the way the world uses the term however as we handle it she is Shrinking Violet in disappearance and Kuudere in the rest of the books.

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!So Dandere is not (only) related to shyness after all? It is definitively different from Shrinking Violet, then. I am not sure I get how it is different from Kuudere, though.
The reasoning behind it Kuudere at it out of hate, indifference, or hasrh teacher types they have emotions and they are working right they just do not wish to share them most of all with the love interest till she does. Lulu from Final Fantasy X best example I can think of.
While Dandere is Broken Bird on the inside (causing them to be just silent, min about of words needed or just flat out a loner) or not knowing how to properly handle their emotions causes them to be it.
They can sometimes look exactly the same.
But it does cover Shrinking Violet if you read the trope carefully although it says "not always" do they open up in the 5th paragraph while this term is always + a little more since the word Danmari is a tiny bit broader than "Shy" as most japanese words are.

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Oh, here's another example:
- The title character from Rain. Due to "her" transsextility, and her natural shyness, she never had much friends. However, once she was found out at her new school, she opens up a little to her new friends.
I think if you want to redefine this to "Someone who only opens up to a small group of people" you should:
- Pick another name because this isn't just something that happens in anime and the word is better known as a music genre.
- Take it to YKTTW and flesh out the definition to be balanced to all media types.
- Pick up examples from more than just anime.
So I'll launch this YKTTW under Dandere.
Seriously, pick another name. We should find something more descriptive.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickYeah that would need a new name because thats not Dandere means, its just what I thought Dandere was till I actually looked it up elsewhere thanks to the confusing writeup.
Dandere is a broader term to Shrinking Violet that covers anything unsocial instead of just shy.

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Quiet Around Strangers? It's not perfect but it's a descriptive working title for while it's in YKTTW.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI think the whole Dandere concept could be described as a shell, which only certain people can get through.
EDIT: Also, I'm going to post it as Dandere anyways for convinece, for now.

Why post it under an inaccurate obtuse name?
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickIs 'dandere' a music genre? Google doesn't shows anything like that to me. All pages seems to be about Dandere.
Here's the YKTTW: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/discussion.php?id=4ha7pof8fzw27zmzj7x1j5d0
EDIT: I suggest you think up a good name.

How is this? using most of the original language.
A dandere will be more or less a normal person, but, will not talk unless spoken to/required to. He/she will avoid talking because of his/her shyness, but if need be, he/she will speak. Also, a dandere tends to feel more power in numbers. If he/she is with a group that he/she is comfortable with, then the shyness factor of said dandere will very likely decrease if another, unfamiliar person is introduced at that time.
The name comes from an abbreviation of 'danmari deredere'. 'Danmari' means silence, taciturn, shy, while 'deredere' means lovestruck.
We at T Vtropes have split this into Shrinking Violet and included the rest in Kuudere as the rest that do not fit Shrinking Violet can be visually identical only the reasoning behind it is slightly different.
Not to be confused with Dan Dare.

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!"Split" isn't the proper term, not all Kuudere and Shrinking Violet are Dandere.
Kuudere can be stoic instead of shy, and Shrinking Violet isn't necessarily warming up.
But then Haruhi would be discluded, since she's neither a Shrinking Violet or a Kuudere. She's a Genkai Girl with a Dandere cover.

Damnit your right... Can I scream now?
Toss examples that do not fit Shrinking Violet or Kuudere on the page?
Haruhi is really the only one I can think of.

Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Sigh... it's been modified since it was last discussed here.
Is that really how "dandere" is used in fandom now? Or did someone try and narrow it down?
Most of the time I've seen dandere used just to mean "quiet and shy" girl, ie Shrinking Violet.
For example, Shinobu from Love Hina is one I've seen referenced as a dandere.
What I am saying is that, in the manga, there is no indication Nodoka Does Not Like Men. Even because there is little men in the first place. She, for what I remember, is not particularly more shy with Takahata or Kotarô.
About Haruhi, if the trope has to do with shyness then it is not related to her, at all. If it is just about unsociableness, then she is a good example.
Mikuru probably doesn't count either. She is shy with her friends as well. Yuki either, for she is neither shy nor more social with her friends.
