Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.

Looks like we have a big page lock coming. Big in the sense of many pages and big in the sense that the pages to be locked are too big.

It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine

They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.

I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

I've split Adult Fear. Also, if a page is already split by headers, folders etc., should we always split along these pre-existing separations?

Got Characters. The Secret World. And Septimus, I have been splitting it by pre-existing separations, and that usually works, but I've run into a couple examples where it's soft-split into groups of two or three characters each, which obviously are too small for their own pages. Do you remember back when Characters.A Certain Magical Index had twenty subpages? Like that.

Mohs Scale Of Rock And Metal Hardness had over 700k characters? How is that even possible? Did Fast Eddie fix the underlying code and forgot to tell us? ;-)

Well, did a brute-force split on WMG.Warhammer40000. Just chopped it up into archives. It's ugly, but it works.

Someone split Mohs Scale Of Rock And Metal Hardness into level subpages.

Author Appeal is over 430K characters...it's currently sorted by the last names of the creators and then some other criteria but a medium subpage split shouldn't be hard.

Surprisingly-Similar Stories has tipped the 500,000 mark a while back. There are suggestions on how to deal with it in the discussion page. The proposal that's supported by a majority of the commenters (read: 3 out of 5) is to split off a separate Surprisingly Similar Characters page where only the characters are similar, not the plots or settings (which would stay on the page).

Also, there is the issue of this being a Just for Fun page with no attribution standard, so splitting off the attributable entries from the non-attributable ones and locking the latter in an archive is also an option.

I'm going to go on ahead and try to construct the two pages with attribution comments, so that if they become too large again, we can split off into "unattributed" archives, followed by Sub-pages by original contributor, per the Paint the Hero Black page.

Update on the Surprisingly-Similar Stories page: When I actually counted as opposed to relying on third-party reports, the character count came out to be 280,000 characters. Large, true, but not anything requiring immediate action. Again, plans have been formed but they can be implemented at a non-hurried pace. I apologize for the inconvenience.

[up]If you scroll down to the very bottom of the page and look at the bottom left, that's the number that matters for our purposes, and it's in the 540k range. Considering that the "third-party reports" are coming directly from TV Tropes and even the page itself, I wouldn't brush them off too lightly.

Also, given that 547607 is the indicated character count, I have to wonder where you took your number from.

DarthWiki.OnePiece-StrawHatPirates is on the list. The thing is, it appears to be a mirror (probably horribly out of date) of Characters.OnePiece-StrawHatPirates. Like someone tried to sandbox it and didn't know what they were doing. Should it just be cutlisted?

So was going to brute-force WMG.Poison Oak Epileptic Trees, but I really have to ask if we need it at all. It just seems...like a random dumping ground of dark theories. Not really seeing the distinction from normal WMG.

700 wicks, though.

Inbounds, technically. Only 170 wicks proper.

I think that some items on that page could be archived.

Noting Characters.Kill La Kill here, since it's just grown to 634185 characters and people have been complaining about lag time. Would a split along headers work.
