YMMV / Llan-ar-goll-en

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: In "Y Fâs Flodau", Prys starts a vacuum and an unsuspecting Ceri gets her tail sucked in. However, because her tail is small, it looks like her butt is getting sucked up by the vacuum instead. Her cries for Prys to stop the vacuum, and her sigh of relief when he does surely doesn't help. Needs to be seen to be believed.
  • Award Snub: In 2015, Llan-ar-goll-en was nominated for the first (and only) time in the British Academy Cymru Awards for Best Children's Programme, but it lost to Boom Plant's #Fi.
  • Awesome Music: The show's theme tune will get stuck in your head very easily, even if you don't speak Welsh, and for good reason. The song has a silly yet mysterious vibe, perfectly fitting the series while also having an awesome rhyme scheme to it.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: In "Y Pysgodyn Aur", Beti's goldfish, Orenda, is missing. Prior to this, Ianto, a cat, whines about how hungry he is. The moment Orenda goes missing, you can immediately tell that the cat would eat the fish, to the point where it's a bit unbelievable that Prys, against all odds, didn't immediately come to such an easy conclusion.
  • Crossover Ship: There's some Ceri X Blue (Bleri) shippers out there, due to both being smart problem-solving female dogs.
  • Fanfic Fuel: There are some curiosities that were never answered in the show itself, and it has opened the doors for many fanfic ideas that could explore these concepts, such as:
    • How exactly did Prys and Ceri meet each other, befriend each other, and become the detective duo for the village (named for how things usually go lost)?
    • What was the village like before? Were there other detectives who lived there before Prys and Ceri, willing to solve mysteries for their friends?
    • What about the rest of Ceri's family? Or anyone else's, for that matter?
      • Also, Ceri's nearly identical cousin, Caradog. What kind of adventures does he get up to anyway? Does he have a human friend who he solves crimes with, like Ceri and Prys?
    • Mrs. Tomos. Who wouldn't want to know more about the time she visited Iceland just to hunt a huge yeti?
  • Fan Nickname: You'll often see fans of the show refer to it as "Welsh Blue's Clues", due to the welcomed similarities between both shows.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Fans of Blue's Clues are very friendly with fans of Llan-ar-goll-en, due to both Preschool Shows sharing similar premises (a live action man and his animated dog solving mysteries).
  • Gateway Series: Llan-ar-goll-en can be considered a child's introduction to the Detective Drama genre, as it is a lighthearted example of one.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: While the show did well in Wales to garner a second series and a half-hour Christmas Special, the show attracted a very small audience in other countries thanks to a Colbert Bump on Twitter years after it ended. Worth mentioning the show was never distributed to anywhere else but Wales. This is most definitely due to Ceri being seen as cute to many, but also because of the show's clever and witty humor and charming characters.
  • Moe:
    • Ceri the dog is a big cutie that clearly stole the show. Harsh truth is that the show wouldn't have caught many eyes if it weren't for her.
    • That isn't to say that silly Prys doesn't have his adorkable moments either as he struggles to solve mysteries.
    • The mice featured in the episode "Het Radli" are CUTE.
    • In fact, just about any animated animal in this show is adorable, such as Myfanwy the cow and Carwyn and Cadi, Santa's reindeer. But Sugar Lump, Mrs. T's red cat especially qualifies.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: Pretty much every dog-like sound Ceri makes counts as this, such as whenever she whimpers or barks.
  • Periphery Demographic: As the show had a recent resurgence in popularity, teens and adults became interested in the show and what it was, which is far from its intended demographic of young children.
  • Popular with Furries: Not exactly "popular", seeing as how underrated this show remains even after the Colbert Bump, though if there is anyone who will take interest in this show, it will almost certainly be a member of the Furry Fandom. And you can thank Ceri for that.
  • Quirky Work: From flying bikes to talking hand bags and singing letter stamps, and with a main cast comprising of a pirate and wizard, Llan-ar-goll-en is nothing short of a Mind Screw. Of course, it's probably not helped by the language barrier caused by an English dub not existing, therefore the only way a non-Welsh speaker could understand the show is through subtitles.
  • Spiritual Successor:
    • Llan-ar-goll-en is this to Blue's Clues, as both shows feature a live-action man solving mysteries with their animated female dog (a la the Roger Rabbit Effect). The former show (likely unintentionally) filled in the gap that was left by the latter, even if Blue's Clues would receive a reboot years later.
    • The show also isn't without its comparisons to LazyTown, as both are cult classics from relatively obscure countries (Iceland and Walesnote ) with a similar style of Medium Blending (one uses puppets while the other uses animated animals, both interacting with humans), and a great usage of Eccentric Townsfolk.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: This show is a pure and funny Preschool Show about two friends solving silly mysteries in their small town filled with Eccentric Townsfolk. All of the characters are guarantee to make you smile with their witty banter, and its shown many times that they care for each other. Prys and Ceri's friendship is especially heartwarming and sweet, and overall the show just has a relaxing charm to it. All of the characters are also really cute and adorkable, animated or not.
  • This Is Your Premise on Drugs: The show is basically regarded as LazyTown meets a Welsh version of Blue's Clues on ecstasy.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion:
    • One may have mistook Sugar Lump for a girl, considering that he has no Tertiary Sexual Characteristics and is only capable of making animal noises, plus having a female owner; he is a male cat however.
    • The opposite case could also be made for Cadi the reindeer, considering she looks nearly identical to her male partner, and once again, there is nothing (outside of her voice) to easily identify her as a girl.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The animation of all of the animals is smooth and glorious, especially when interacting with the real-life environment around them, which isn't always an easy thing to pull off.
