YMMV / Dragon Ball DC

Go To

  • Awesome Ego: Par the course for Vegeta. He's a Smug Super but given that he proved to be Kakarot's better when they fought and almost single handedly defeated the Injustice Gang despite the Amazons' restraints limiting his strength, he's more than capable of backing up his power.
    • Lex Luthor fights in the Doom Saga and he proves he's as capable of backing his bragging ever by demolishing the Superman Revenge Squad.
  • Catharsis Factor: Much like canon Dragon Ball, this series nicely sets up villains the audience wants to see defeated.
    • The Saiyan Saga, seeing Kakarot come back and defeat Raditz are getting beaten so badly the first time.
    • In the Entity Saga, Kakarot turning Super Saiyan and inflicting a Curb-Stomp Battle on Rogal Zaar. This was after Rogal Zaar had just established himself as being prepared to kill any surviving Saiyans at any cost no matter who got in his way, and had killed Batman.
    • Along with bringing back the heroes and innocent people killed in the Saiyan Saga, Raditz and Nappa are also brought back to life. Both characters were criticized as wasted in canon, so it was instantly satisfying for fans to see them brought back to life.
    • The Super Saiyan Saga sees Broly finally decide to stop bending over to Paragus' abuse, in a moment where Paragus undergoes a Jerkass Realization.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Larfleeze proved one for his funny dialogue, to the point where he appeared in his own side video series.
    • Broly instantly proved one with his introduction. His sympathetic backstory cemented it.
  • Escapist Character: Kakarot Kent. He is a Composite Character of Son Goku and Superman, who were already famous examples of this trope.
  • Foe Yay Shipping: Vegeta and Wonder Woman, even with Steve Trevor as Diana's lover.
    • Their first meeting is the two fighting in the Saiyan Saga, Vegeta being impressed by Diana's power.
    • After Vegeta's defeat his held prisoner by Wonder Woman and visited by her a regular basis. Vegeta states that as royalty he owed Diana more respect than commoners. Diana somewhat enjoys their meetings and knocking Vegeta down a peg, while hoping he will change his ways.
    • Orion comes to Earth to kill Vegeta and Wonder Woman saves him from being killed.
    • After putting up with Vegeta proclaiming that Virtue Is Weakness, Diana pins him to the ground and ties the Lasso of Truth around his neck. She also ties it around her own arm. After Vegeta states that he has to be evil because no being would ever love him after all the evil he has committed, Diana states she loves everyone, even him.
    • Vegeta saves Diana from the Injustice Gang. After returning to his cell he tries to deny caring about her, but when grabs the Lasso of Truth to try and prove it to himself, he is forced to admit that he does care about her. He then states that he deserves her and suffers a Despair Event Horizon that causes him to turn Super Saiyan when he grabs the lasso again and states he deserves nothing.
    • Vegeta shows off his Super Saiyan state to Diana. He expects her to be impressed by it. She is impressed, by how beautiful she finds it.
    • Kakarot is a Friendly Enemy to Atomic Skull and Metallo, treating them like friends despite them trying to kill him. And Metallo largely returns his politeness.
  • Ho Yay: The final of the Entity Saga has Hawkgirl and Martian Manhunter pull a Big Damn Heroes in the fight with Rogal Zaar. They teleported using the Violet Light of Love. Whose love did they use? Larfleeze's admiration for Kakarot.
    • When Kakarot is sent to an alternate universe he finds Caulifla and Kale, a duo already well known for this trope in canon, the latter outright being referred to as the former's girlfriend.
    • Caulifla and Kale's A Day In The Lime Light doesn't beat around the bush and makes it clear the two are lovers.
    • Kakarot sees Atomic Skull and Metallo and says they act Like an Old Married Couple. To his shock, they duo explains they are married.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the outtakes for the Saiyan Saga, Raditz complains that he doesn't get a redemption arc. Come the end of the Entity Saga, Raditz is brought back to life, giving rise to the hope he will get a redemption arc.
  • Jerkass Dissonance: Like in canon, Vegeta has a fanbase in spite of, or arguably because of what a jerk is, with many fans have stated plots revolving around him are better than story's focused on Kakarot.
  • Jerkass Woobie: All three of the villainous Saiyans;
    • Raditz was only a boy when they were abducted by Darkseid. Unlike in canon he was horrified at the thought his younger brother had been killed Planet Vegeta was destroyed. But thanks to Darkseid's torture he gave up any hope of his brother ever coming for him and grew to hate him instead.
    • Nappa was used as a gladiator and speaking out of turn got him beaten. When asked by Aquaman where he pride as warrior was, Nappa somberly states he had it beaten out of him years ago. When subjected to the Lasso of Truth by Wonder Woman, Nappa actually starts to consider life outside of servitude to Darkseid, only to be killed by Vegeta.
    • Vegeta has it the worst. He is the same Jerkass he was in canon, but at the same time his life managed to be even worse. He was personally raised and tortured by Darkseid, hoping in vain to one day grow strong enough to kill him. Apparently he succeeding only to realize Darkseid was an enemy he could never surpass, Vegeta surrendered to a future as Darkseid's slave. After his defeat in the Saiyan Saga he is kept a prisoner on Earth, attempting to make escape only to see there was nowhere for him to go before he is humiliated by Wonder Woman, Vegeta admits he feels that no being could ever love him. In the Super Saiyan Saga he admits he does care about Wonder Woman while touching the Lasso of Truth, no matter how much he wants to deny it. When he tries touch the lasso and claims he deserves her, he instead is forced to admit he deserves nothing.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Rogal Zaar initially comes off as Well-Intentioned Extremist trying to rid the universe of the Saiyans who will Never Hurt an Innocent. But then after he loses his patience with Kyle Rayner standing in his way, despite him not posing a threat due to the lose of his ring, he tries to kill him.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Rogal Zaar was much better received in this series than in canon since due to him fitting in much better in the story the destruction of the Saiyans than the destruction of Krypton.
  • Shocking Moments: The Entity Saga; Batman dies taking a hit aimed at Kakarot. And at the end, Lex Luther reveals he has this universe' version of Gohan as a son. Voiced by MasakoX no less.
    • The Entity Saga sees Raditz and Nappa brought back to life, something fans weren't expecting.
  • Unexpected Character: Rogal Zaar wasn't a popular addition to the Superman mythos so he wasn't high on the list of DC characters people thought they'd see in a crossover with Dragon Ball.
  • Unpopular Popular Character: As usual, Vegeta. At best other characters can tolerate him. But fans love him all the same.
  • The Woobie: Broly. He and his father spent their days on War World before Mongul showed up and Broly acted as Mongul's champion in his Gladiator Games out of fear Mongul would kill Paragus. Despite all he did for Paragus, he turns on Broly when Flash and Mera try to rescue him, berating Broly for threatening his position with Mongul and threatening to kill him. The Super Saiyan Saga reveals Broly was tortured for disobeying Paragus, but it was never the physical pain that got to him, it was the pain of his father's betrayal.
    • Superboy/Gohan. He was raised by Lex Luthor, who is a controlling Abusive Parent who talk about him like he's an object when he's not around. And when Superboy nearly dies against the Parasite, Luthor calls him a disappointment and says he's leaving him to his fate.
