The names of the characters are not actually their names
The characters are what the audience perceives. We only know them by their Punny, meaningful, and sometimes unfortunate names. Like how could Bocchi's parents name her Bocchi aware that their family name is Hitori; meaning her name combined in East Asian order would be a pun for "being alone". The characters in universe has perfectly normal names.
  • The only problem for this theory would be the existence of the pun-filled Aru Song. Maybe their names are normal in their universe.
Bocchi is Komi
Bocchi is Komi Shoko in her middle school. This occurred in an alternate universe where Bocchi entered another school and therefore did not meet Nako, Aru, and Sotoka and lived a lonely middle school life. Kai was deeply disappointed with this and she and Bocchi had a irreversible fall out. Bocchi decided to enter another high school than Kai entered to move on.

Both characters have crippling social anxiety and Bocchi is good in academics managing to write a haiku in just minutes and score high in exams without much effort and are kind in heart.

Alternatively Bocchi is set in the same universe as No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!
Same as above but going to a darker route. Bocchi is Tomoko Kuroki and instead of pursuing friends despite her anxiety decides to blame the world for her friendless background. Kai of course is Yuu and still remains friends with Bocchi.
  • Most likely jossed from what we know from Tomoko's middle school life.
    • It could still be in the same universe, just different prefectures.

Nako could probably be Yoshida though.

Regarding Kurai's past
Kurai Kako's name is a pun for "dark past" suggest that this is a big reason for her policy of not making friends so she could be stronger. She could have been a victim of abusive parents or bullied by All of the Other Reindeer due to being different in someway since Kids Are Cruel, or was betrayed by her friends and decided never to get close to anyone again and adopted a tough disciplinarian and emotionless facade. Bocchi somehow manages to break this at times.

Kurai is Hanekawa
Think about it, Kurai's name means "dark past" which could relate to Hanekawa's issues with her abusive or neglectful adoptive parents. Yes Hanekawa was shown to have a single braid as a preschooler but could have sported a bobcut hair in middle school and Kurai's green eyes could are just inconsistency that her eyes could have really been purple. Kurai's name could have not been her real name after all and it was mentioned how Hanekawa frequently changed names due to having multiple adoptive parents.

Kurai's policy of not having friends could have given her all the time in the world to improve her academics and knowledge to Hanekawa's level or she could have been smart even then. Her credentials of being Bocchi's class moral officer could have helped Kurai as Hanekawa get selected as their class representative. While less bossy and somehow more open to friends in Monogatari, Kurai when she first met Koyomi Araragi as Hanekawa still seems not to have any other close friendship giving credence to this theory.

Also Hanekawa's second apparition is the Hysteria Tiger, which is also known as "Kako", and is a nod to her past as Kurai Kako which aside from being a manifestation of her envy towards other characters's happy family life also reflects her envy towards others having genuine bonds with others which her perfect "white" facade makes it hard for her to forge relationships on her own.

The Wahaha Song is real
The Bocchi School of Laughs song is actually a song from the author's childhood and decided to incorporate the song in the series that is why they were able to adopt the song in the anime.

Aru really had a younger sister
Aru just didn't made it up. She really has a younger sister named Mieru. She fortunately didn't bump into Mieru's classmates when she accidentally dresses up in full elementary school attire or goes to a different elementary school than her.

Hitoribocchi is set in the same universe as Doki Doki Literature Club!
Aru is Monika. Both have brown hair, sport a ponytail, and has green eyes. Aru is unfortunate to be the only one character to know she's fictional. Just Aru....

Hitoribocchi is set in the same universe as Danganronpa
Aru will be admitted in Hope's Peak Academy or another affiliated school for gifted students as the Ultimate Class Vice President.
  • Her real title is the Ultimate Unfortunate student or less cynically the Ultimate Motivator.
  • She will be a participant and survivor of a Killing Game by Monokuma and convince the other eventual survivors to choose hope over despair with her "beams". Monokuma will taunt what's left of Aru's class that there are unfortunate but instead of getting triggered will make a speech that they may be unfortunate but as long as they have hope they will keep moving on.
  • Or alternatively Aru will grow up to become Chisa.

Bocchi will return to her role as the Head Strategist of the baseball team, but this time it will be for the boys in her class.
So far, all of Bocchi's classmates have been given names and distinctive appearances. Among them, four male classmates, Ruhito Tamato, Ran Homu, Reito Suto, and Banto Tokui, have names which are baseball references (ball catcher, home run, straight and good at bunt, respectively). Knowing how sometimes the characters in the series are named after something they do, they must be part of some baseball team. After Bocchi's achievements as a head strategist in making her baseball team victorious, her classmates will need her help at some point in the future.
  • Josed. Bocchi actually managed to befried Raku along with all her male classmates in one og.

Bocchi will not fulfill her promise to befriend everyone in her class, but will make up with Kai anyway
Considering that she only has six friends out of 28 at the end of her first year, she's severely behind schedule. That being said, I think Kai has to acknowledge that A)It was unfair of her to expect Bocchi to befriend everyone in her class, and B)that Bocchi has come a long way. The series climax at the end of Bocchi and Kai's third year of middle school will probably involve Bocchi calling upon all she learned, as well as her new friends, to reach out to Kai, finally getting through to her.
  • Josed. Bocchi do manages to befriend all her class by the end.
