So much for "wahaha"

WARNING: Unmarked spoilers.

General

  • Nearly anytime Bocchi cries.
  • Really, Nako's situation before meeting Bocchi. Nearly anyone she came across perceived her as a delinquent or, in the teacher's case, were terrified of her solely because of her appearance. It does explain why she acted abrasively towards Bocchi when they first met. She most likely anticipated that she'd be like the others and assume the worse.
  • While she is vehement at not making friends, Kako appears to be genuinely saddened when watching Bocchi and the others ride on the Do-Your-Best-Fairies. While standing on a cliff, she has a look of longing on her face.

Anime

  • Episode 1:
    • Bocchi is clearly not looking forward to middle school because her Only Friend made her promise that until she befriended her entire class, she would be severing her ties with her.
    • Bocchi tries to introduce herself to her classmates only to vomit out of stress.

  • Episode 2:
    • Bocchi accidentally makes Nako upset when she carelessly reveals that she befriended her as part of the promise that she made with Kai. Just the fact that Bocchi could've chosen anyone makes Nako feel that there really wasn't anything special about her at all.

  • Episode 3:
    • Bocchi worrying her friends has abandoned her when she was out of school for being sick. She imagines a scenario when Nako befriended someone, and that girl mocks her for being shy and not being able to be friends with everyone.

  • Episode 6:.
    • Bocchi is distraught to learn that Nako failed her math test meaning that she would have to stay behind to take supplementary lessons and retake the test.

  • Episode 7:
    • Bocchi's nightmare of Kai not becoming her friend during her first year at the middle school.
    • Bocchi nearly falls into the Despair Event Horizon when being chewed out by Kako for failing to dress properly by the school's standards.
    • Coincidentally, Kai was attending the same karaoke establishment Bocchi was. Bocchi calls out to her and... Kai starts to walk off without as much as glancing at her, even as Bocchi reports her progress and introduces her newfound friends. Bocchi breaks down over Kai's lack of response, but we cut to the outside of the karaoke and we discover that Kai had been beating herself up over forcing the promise on Bocchi, and was fearing Bocchi would hate her for it.

  • Episode 8:
    • The episode opens with Sotoka getting ready for school, and before heading off, bids her farewells to an empty room.

  • Episode 10:
    • Bocchi is saddened that another semester was coming to an end, and she had yet to befriend the entire class.

  • Episode 12:
    • In some ways, while the ending is overall happy, Kako still refuses to become Bocchi's friend in response to Bocchi inviting her to walk home with her and the others. The only solace is Bocchi's influence is still gradually eroding Kako's tough girl persona.

Manga

  • Chapter 60:
    • We're introduced to Omoi Kakeru, a mysterious loner who often goes to the roof to try and talk to aliens. Turns out she's trying to talk to them because she believes aliens have the technology to talk to her deceased mother. Thankfully, Bocchi befriends Kakeru and offers to help her transmit messages using the Do-Your-Best Fairy.

  • Chapter 75:
    • Nako's backstory is revealed; due to her family constantly moving, she changes schools often and can't form lasting friendships as a result, causing her to stop trying to make friends and act abrasively to discourage others from talking to her.
    • Nako is informed that her family will be moving away again and she will have to leave her friends behind. Despite her telling Bocchi in the nicest way possible, the latter doesn't take this news well at all.
