General

  • Bocchi misunderstanding situations due to her crippling social anxiety.
  • Aru headbutting Nako after being called "unfortunate".
  • Oshie being deathly afraid of Nako despite her not doing anything threatening to her.
  • The talking chickens that appear randomly in the episodes. The fact that they can speak is never contemplated on.

Anime

Episode 1
  • Bocchi attempts to abolish Class 1-1 but ironically attracts fascination by the other students who assume that it must have been a prank or that it was a superior version of the original class. Bocchi herself thought that she went too far and was contemplating if she would be arrested for it.
  • Bocchi tries to introduce herself to the class...but vomits instead.
  • Just the fact that Bocchi is delighted that Nako spoke to her in spite of her calling her "Barf" is this as well as her confusion on what a gofer is.
  • Bocchi makes herself a Human Notepad, with instructions on which of her limbs to check for a response to something Nako says. Unfortunately, she apparently didn't realize that people could play games on cell phones, so she's left at a loss for words and frantically looks for her scripted response.
  • Bocchi lends Nako her umbrella so that she wouldn't go down a further downward spiral.
  • After exchanging cell phone numbers with Nako, Bocchi finds herself constantly walking into things.
  • When she first asks Nako if she wanted to exchange phone numbers, Bocchi cries and says that when she goes home, she'd die, even though Nako was really just messing with her.

Episode 2

  • It takes Bocchi almost half the episode to explain to Aru why Nako seems to be mad at her, and most of her explanation is extraneous. Naturally, Aru starts wondering what the point of all the lead-up was, as well as why Bocchi didn't just start with saying that Nako got mad at her for claiming to have befriended her to fulfill a promise to a friend.
  • Nako passes Bocchi a message about going to the roof that day. After initially intending to treasure it, Bocchi responds back by giving Nako information on alpacas.
    • Nako spouts a "lewdish" Big "NO!" when Bocchi pokes her back. This disrupts the class and causes Ms. Oshie to drop her chalk in fright.
  • Bocchi tells Nako that she loves her even though she had started to speak with her because of a promise she made with Kai. Naturally, Nako is taken aback and informs her to watch her words lest others take what she said the wrong way.

Episode 3

  • When Bocchi is having difficulty with asking Aru to walk home with her and Nako after school, Nako karate chops her to get her attention. She confesses to doing it just because.
  • Nako and Aru get into an argument with each other which Bocchi assumes indicates that they got along nicely. But when they disagree with her, Bocchi starts to cry, and they quickly cover for her.
  • Bocchi's "serious suit", a bear costume that she wears around the house whenever she invites guests to her home.
  • Bocchi breaking all of the tea cups in her scramble of getting Nako comfortable.
  • Bocchi catches a fever but tries to refrain from crying when Nako tells her that she's heading home.

Episode 4

  • Sotoka believing that Bocchi's a ninja.

Episode 5

  • When caught wearing a full elementary school outfit, Aru tries to pass herself off as being her own fictional sister. Her friend and Bocchi both fall for it.
  • The fact that even though she had spent a great amount of time attending the tennis club, Aru sucks at the game.
  • Aru's Image Song plays as she feebly tries to even make a serve against Nako, and by the time she finally succeeds, she's behind 7-1, making this one of the most embarrassing cases of a failed Theme Music Power-Up in anime.

Episode 6

  • As part of helping Nako on how to study properly, Bocchi tickles her sides to make her laugh.
  • Bocchi’s mom’s advice: ‘everyone’s a potato’.
  • The math teacher was out for the day, so Ms. Oshie was tasked with giving the students their math tests back. And she's not ready to hand Nako hers.
    • Oshie's suspicions lead her to rationalize that Bocchi's secretly a gang leader and so tells her directly that she'll never be her friend. Cue Bocchi's freak out.
  • Bocchi's attempt at comedy by adding "wah ha ha" in a flat monotone voice. Made more hilarious when she forgets about it for a moment, then adds it in a few seconds later.
  • Nako succeeds at making a higher grade on her retest, and the episode ends with the girls laughing maniacally. Even the teacher joins in from afar.
    • The special ending credits show the girls singing a song in the same monotonous laughter Bocchi makes to humor Nako earlier in the episode.

Episode 7

  • Bocchi decides to teach Nako how to swim when they decide to go to the town pool, and Aru pokes fun at Nako for it. Unfortunately, she did not realize that Nako had gotten out of the water and she gets tossed in.
  • Aru opts to do some stretches before going into the pool but tells Sotoka not to exercise in front of her after seeing that Sotoka's pretty endowed.
  • Nako asks Bocchi to apply some sunscreen on her back, which she does... in a frenzied manner.
  • Again, Nako calls Aru unfortunate, prompting another headbutt. But since Aru's swimming at the time, she makes an impressive backwards jump to do it.
  • Sotoka trying — and failing — to run on water.
  • Bocchi announcing that she's attending karaoke with her friends over the microphone.
    • Bocchi is asked to sing, only to toss the mic across the room out of embarrassment. This also has the after effect of the droning sound causing the other girls to cover their ears.
  • When the gang is doing karaoke, Aru is asked to start them off by singing her self-help song.
Nako: "Lose Aru, don't shine, Aru..."
  • After some tearjerker-worthy scenes of Bocchi and Kai crying separately, they both vomit.

Episode 8

  • Bocchi tries to return the spare bow tie she received last semester to Kako, but she only stares, succeeding at only annoying her.
  • Kako constantly telling Bocchi to stand properly without slouching over. When she offers to assist her in cleaning the desks, Bocchi tries to wipe the desks while still standing upright.
  • Bocchi's "strong" face, where she puffs up her cheeks and has Blank White Eyes.
  • Nako is unsurprisingly the worst jogger in her P. E. class.
    • Bocchi does a more refined march while still having that serious look on her face.

Episode 9

  • Bocchi is assigned to work in a different group for cooking class and naturally nearly botches it.
    • After the group successfully makes some pancakes with whipped cream (thanks to Aru's intervention), Bocchi's groupmates ask her whether she'd want to work with them again. She then apologizes immensely, causing confused reactions.
  • When introducing her friends to Kako, Bocchi offhandedly mentions how Aru dressed up as an elementary student in one episode as well as how she wore a clothes hanger in her debut episode. The funniest gem, however, is when she gets to Nako and simply says that she sits in front of her. Nako is not amused by it.
    • Later, when Kako asks how much she knew about Bocchi personally, Nako replies that Bocchi was the girl who sat behind her and barfed often.
  • Nako, Sotoka, and Aru eavesdrop on Bocchi inviting Kako on their outdoor trip, and Aru basks in the attention that she's getting. Nako tells her not to get her hopes up, and Sotoka bluntly agrees.
    • Aru headbutts Nako even though Kako was the one who called her "unfortunate" that time.
  • Despite her stern girl exterior, Kako becomes ecstatic about joining Hitori and the others in making curry during their outdoors class. She even creates a guidebook on how to make the perfect curry...something she had contemplated on for a week.
    • She also sulks at Sotoka saying that she personally enjoyed seafood doria.
  • Kako is tasked with fire control; Aru with water; and Bocchi and Sotoka are assigned with cooking. Nako herself gives herself the task of "observing the work," and goes to lay down on a bench.
  • Bocchi decides to take a group picture with her friends, but realizes too late after she made it her screensaver that she had forgotten to include herself in it.

Episode 10

  • Aru prepares to headbutt Nako again, only to relent when she realizes that she wasn't talking about her.
  • Kako recites the same chant Sotoka and Bocchi make.
  • When asked what her dream is, Nako remarks that she wished to be a little better than she was before. Aru laughs at her wish only to realize that she was alluding to her dream.
  • Kai mentions having befriended Aru, only for her friends to note that she's wearing a jinbei instead of a yukata as she intended. Aru's misfortune is rubbing off on her.
  • Bocchi successfully apologizes to her groupmates (Peko and Ito) after the pancakes fiasco...but she was a far distance away from them.
  • Aru loses her cotton candy to a gust of wind. A little later, as she's about to send a picture of Bocchi sleeping to Kai, her cotton candy lands directly on her phone.
  • Upon seeing Bocchi making good friends with the aforementioned groupmates, Sotoka walks over to Aru and asks for her help by repeatedly shaking her.
    • Nako bemoans on why she has to assist Sotoka and Aru with dealing with Bocchi, but Aru reminds her that she didn't have anything planned anyway.
  • When Bocchi calls her "Sotoka-san" again, Sotoka is so upset, she decides to go home.
  • Bocchi asks Aru how her little sister Mieru is doing. Aru tries to pass it off as her moving far away only to make Bocchi cry.
Aru: Wait, you're crying?! You're making my heart ache!
  • Aru stretches Nako's cheeks irritably asking her why she always takes the good moments.
  • Sotoka tosses a shuriken at Bocchi's head to get her attention.

Episode 11

  • Mayo tries to help Bocchi stop the class shuffling from happening by attempting to buy the school for 500 yen.
  • Sotoka shows that she isn't just limited to crafting paper shurikens by making dozens of cranes in less than a minute.
  • Nako decides to lightly bully Bocchi by telling her that in order to join the "cellphone tap tap group," she needed a smartphone. Sotoka then pokes her as punishment.
  • While the girls are trying to take a group picture with Mayo, Mayo, Bocchi, and Sotoka get so distracted by the different styles of the photos, Aru angrily chooses the options for them.

Episode 12

  • Bocchi finally gets her smartphone, and upon learning that she can speak to hers, she asks it to be her friend. She even faints.
    • Bocchi tries to get air into her phone after hearing how the other girls got air in when they were putting their screen protectors on.
  • Kako actually smiling. Later, it's revealed that she was really running a high fever.
  • After Kako collapses, Bocchi, Sotoka and Nako follow her home. When Kako goes outside for a moment, Bocchi tries to hide by pressing her face against the wall to the Kurai residence, while Sotoka tries a camouflage sheet that doesn't match the wall at all.
  • Kako lends Bocchi a DVD, as she promised. Unfortunately for her, she only gave Bocchi the DVD case, without the DVD inside. Kako's rather shocked when she opens up her DVD player to see the DVD still inside.
  • In a game, Aru has the girls guess what her dream was. Sotoka concludes it to be gold bars, which Aru initially accepts after pondering on it, but then she starts to feel bad when Sotoka talks about her dream, saying that having fun learning ninjutsu from Bocchi and having made more friends was enough for her.
  • Bocchi asks Nako permission to take her picture but is revealed to be recording her. She then takes Aru's picture, upsetting her when she actually takes one of her, and Nako responds by recording Bocchi on her phone.
  • Bocchi offers to put Nako's corsage on, but is so timid, she comes within hairs' length of accidentally stabbing Nako.
    • Bocchi assists one of her upperclassmen with placing the corsage on, and then congratulates her on her baby.
  • After a major absence since episode 6, Oshie returns still as terrified of Nako as ever.
  • Bocchi ends the season (and potentially the anime series as a whole) the way she began it: by vomiting when called on to introduce herself.

Manga

  • The "Bad End" gags at the end of every volume are always good for a quick laugh:
    • Volume 1 has Bocchi accomplishing her goal by bribing everyone to be her friend.
    • Volume 2 has an afro fall onto Bocchi, and the next page shows her becoming a DJ.
    • Volume 3 has Kako realising she could just live alone on a deserted island to ensure her policy of not making friends gets carried out.
  • In Chapter 66, Aru comes to terms with herself and accepts her role as vice-chairman of her class. She then comes to school with a hanger around her neck once again.
