Created by ZerJox, Undertale: Last Breath is a Fan Game of the 2015 smash hit role-playing game Undertale, which presents a distinctly different ending to the game's Genocide Route thanks to the intervention of a mysterious man who speaks in hands teaming up with an old friend.

The original version of Undertale: Last Breath was released on September 14, 2019. You can download it to play for free on GameJolt here.

As of 2021, a remake of Last Breath, called Undertale: Last Breath Retouched, is currently under development.


Undertale: Last Breath features examples of these tropes:

  • Amnesiac Hero: Sans starts out as this thanks to the original game's lore on resetting, but a chance encounter with Gaster results in Sans remembering everything, setting Last Breath in motion.
  • Anti-Frustration Features: Every time you finish a phase, your HP is maxed out and your ITEMs are restored. As you don't get any turns after the first in Phase 3, the latter is essentially useless at that point, though. In addition, the menu bones in the original Undertale's Sans fight are removed no matter what phase you're on.
  • But Thou Must!: Even after killing Sans, you still cannot interact with the SAVE star in the Last Corridor, meaning that you can't use it to reload and avoid dying to Asgore and Flowey. Even if you do replay the game twice and reach the final cutscene both times, the Fallen Child still does nothing to avoid being caught by Flowey.
  • Beyond the Impossible: At the end of Phase 1, Sans gets hit while offering mercy, causing him to go into a speech asking why the Fallen Child is engaging in the Genocide Route so much, he waits, expecting to turn to dust, before noticing something that shouldn't be possible for him of all Monsters; his HP didn't reach zero from that hit, but 0.0001, giving him another chance to end the Fallen Child.
  • Dem Bones: The main focus of this Fan Game is a battle with Sans and Doctor W.D Gaster, although whether the latter is/was a skeleton is up for debate.
  • Didn't See That Coming: The Fallen Child is caught completely off guard by Gaster's plan, and is thrown for a loop after noticing Sans hasn't died. All they can muster is a simple "What just happened?" before Sans wakes up and begins the intro to Phase 3.
  • Downer Ending:
    • Despite the Fallen Child being defeated and the world saved from destruction, the situation is even worse than in canon. At least beforehand, the Monsters would all be brought back during the world's resetting/recreation, meaning that if the Player was stopped earlier, many more lives could be saved - even more if they chose to turn away from the path of Genocide to begin with. As is, everyone aside from Alphys' evacuees, Flowey, and Asgore are all dead, and none of them are coming back as the Player's permanent defeat means their SAVE FILE cannot be reloaded anymore.
    • The player and Frisk are permanently killed, meaning that any hopes of successfully completing the Pacifist route are dashed entirely.
  • Delaying Action: Sans's fight with the Fallen Child, while ultimately hopeless in that the player still wins anyway, gives Asgore enough time to gather his resolve after being informed of everything the player did via Flowey, and the two set up an ambush which ultimately kills off the Fallen Child once and for all.
  • Game Face: Once Gaster's in control, some of his facial features manifest over Sans's face, such as his distinctive cracked head and drooping eyes. When he goes into his full power state, Sans's eyes are replaced with static and his teeth disappear.
  • Grand Theft Me: A rare willing case of this trope takes effect when Gaster takes control of Sans's injured body for the final phase of the fight. It eventually backfires when Sans's body tires out, allowing the Fallen Child to get another hit in, destroying him entirely and seemingly killing Gaster as well.
  • Guide Dang It!: Anyone who has played through Sans' battle in the original Undertale knows that Sans' offer of Mercy is normally a trap to backstab you before you just come back, and aside from a bit of new dialogue ubiquitous with the fight, there is next to no indication that this time, it's actually genuine; sparing Sans now will have him genuinely let you go this time, made even less obvious by the color of his name not being yellow.
  • Hold the Line: Once Phase 2 ends, you're no longer able to do anything but avoid incoming attacks, as your options are destroyed in the intro to Phase 3, and the final 'turn' of the fight is entirely out of your hands.
  • Interface Screw: Once Gaster's in control, he can flip the screen mid-attack to disorient you.
  • Neutral No Longer: Sans, Gaster and Asgore.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: By opening the door to Gaster's room and interacting with him, the Fallen Child inadvertently set in motion a chain of events that would result in their eventual, and very final death.
  • No-Sell: At first, when you slash Sans in Phase 3, you deal no damage to him. Only after he exhausts himself does the Fallen Child finally get the chance to finish him off.
  • Possession Burnout: In Phase 3, Gaster seems to be able to fight for an indefinite amount of time once he takes control of Sans's body, but eventually the body tires, and this spells the end of the fight.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: Sans, with Gaster in control, delivers a particularly long pre-battle speech before activating his Game Face and destroying your actions:
    Sans: "Oh hey there! I see that you finally arrived, huh? Oh well, kid. You will now face something that you will hardly forget. I told you from many genocide routes before... reset. But you didn't listen to me. You could have fixed all this with only a press of a button. You could make your decision, and finally have a good ending. But now, it's too late. Now, you will face out your consequences... that have driven you into this."
  • "Ray of Hope" Ending: Almost the entirety of the Underground is dead, and its survivors face an uncertain future. However, the Fallen Human is no more, and with their death, so ends their constant killing.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Gaster, who had previously been contained in his room, happened to be released by the Fallen Human by chance after the latter came upon the room during their 30th Genocide.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: During the beginning segment of Phase 3, Gaster destroys all of the options available to the player, which in turn prevents the player from having their turn... For a short while at least.
  • Taking the Bullet: Each time that you successfully hit Sans before the end of Phase 3, Gaster blocks your slash with one of his hands, reducing the damage you deal to Sans to a survivable level, even for him.
