Crossovers
  • In the Worm/Dishonored crossover fanfic A Change of Pace, the Outsider points out that Emma thought that shoving Taylor into the locker and letting her suffer for it would make her stronger for it. Riiiiiiiight...
  • Friendship Contract: During the battle with Deidara and Sasori, Naruto and Sasuke both attempt to help Sakura out... repeatedly impairing and imperiling her in the process, as she's nearly shuriken laced with wind and fire chakra. She screams at them both to stop helping her.
  • In Harry Potter and the Gaining of Faith Faith, Harry and Sirius go to Sunnydale to help Buffy and the Scoobies deal with Glory.
Dawn: I really donā€™t think her kind of help is what we need. I think Glory has enough henchmen, donā€™t you?
Faith: (sarcastically) Glory isn't my type. Nowhere near affable enough.
    Buffy: Faith? Stop helping.
  • In Laughing As I Pray, Thor fights the X-Men following a misunderstanding giving him the impression that mutants are a danger to Midgard. Fury bawls him out for almost starting a civil war.
Thor: I was just trying to help!
Fury: SPARE ME YOUR IDEA OF HELPING!
  • In The Prayer Warriors, Stalin's last words are "But I was only trying to help," after the Prayer Warriors confront him over his deciding to allow freedom of religion (while it might seem like a Pet the Dog moment, it's treated as his Moral Event Horizon). They then say "They only person you were trying to help were yourself! You evil satanic Kant!" and kill him.
  • When Raven attempts to teach Willow how to use wandless magic, starting with Balefire, in What Happens in Vegas, Professor Lupin interrupts and tries to show Willow how to cast it "properly" (with a wand). Raven is not remotely amused.
  • The Mountain and the Wolf:
    • The Wolf is clearly trying to help Daenerys win the war against Cersei, unfortunately he does this by trying to establish her as an iron-fisted tyrant who rules through fear, always coming up with new and nauseating ways to make her The Dreaded as if she were an average Chaos Lord. All it does is convince her to do the opposite and dial down her aggressive instincts for fear of becoming like him.
    • It also applies to other characters: when he comes across Jon Snow and Grey Worm about to come to blows over what to do with the Lannister prisoners of war, the Wolf solves the issue by starting to butcher them in as needlessly violent a way a he can, leading to Grey Worm calling off their execution out of sheer disgust.
  • Metal Gear: Green:
    • Bakugou and Kirishima decide to fight Kurogiri, like in canon. This results in the bulk of 1A being scattered across the USJ, 13 being severely injured and Fudaki dying when he decided to fight the Anti-All Might Nomu.
    • Likewise, Shoto's ice and Bakugou and Kirishima deciding to fight the three main villians is not only unwarranted to All Might and the Ocelot unit, but actually makes things more difficult. Apart from the fact the Anti-All Might Nomu can break out of the ice easily, had Ocelot not asked Ochako where to aim, Kurogiri and Shigaraki would've been able to escape from the USJ.

The Ghost and Molly McGee

  • An Unpleasant Surprise: Ashley honestly believes she's trying to help Molly by trying to turn her straight. Unsurprisingly, Molly makes it clear that she does not need or want that sort of "help".

Harry Potter

  • Changed:
Harry: [Hermione]'s going to become unbearable, isn't she?
Ron: Can't say, mate. She could go either way, really. She might just be really supportive and try to help.
Harry: Her 'trying to help' is usually the exact opposite of what I'm trying to do.
  • Harry Potter and Grief's Wisdom:
Harry: So you're saying that muggle ideas are of no use?
Ron: That's not what I said.
Ginny: Actually Ron that is pretty much what you said.
    Ron: Stop helping Ginny.
  • Like a Red-Headed Stepchild:
Hermione: Indeed. I had hoped those rumors about werewolves being vicious monsters were false, but it seems you're nothing but another Death Eater!
Sirius: Moony? A Death Eater? Fat chance of that. He's a werewolf and a bit of a git, but he's no more a servant of the Dark Lord than I am.
Remus: Sirius, that is not helping my case at the moment.

Homestuck

  • In Pawnstuck, Hearts Boxcars offers to prototype/upgrade Diamonds Droog's sprite with a doll in order to speed the game along. Droog explicitly tells him not to do so as he wants to make certain that the object he prototypes his sprite with will be helpful before doing so. Than, the second Droog turns around, Boxcars throws the doll in anyways, permanently turning the sprite into a snarky and only vaguely helpful Aradiasprite. This causes Droog to absolutely lose his shit and accidentally awaken the Lich Queen with his yelling.

Love Hina

  • For His Own Sake: Mutsumi is determined to do whatever it takes to help Keitaro and Naru get back together... after Keitaro broke up with Naru for being an abusive, delusional Spoiled Brat. Neither one wants to rekindle their relationship, yet Mutsumi ignores any and all protests, thoroughly convinced that they have to be a couple so that her previous sacrifices aren't rendered completely pointless.

Miraculous Ladybug

  • It's not unusual for Chat Noir and/or Alya to run headlong into this in fan works critiquing their behavior in the series:
    • Chat Noir's tendency for self-sacrifice is depicted more along the lines of Senseless Sacrifice, with him refusing to work with Ladybug or listen to her plans in favor of reckless action. Often, this is combined with him seeing/treating her Miraculous Cure as a 'Get Out of Consequences Free' card, taking the idea that she'll win and set things right completely for granted.
    • Alya remains a Shipper on Deck for Marinette and Adrien no matter what the circumstances, arrogantly claiming that she 'needs to be pushed' no matter how much she resists her efforts. She also frequently ships LadyNoir over Ladybug's protests.
  • Feralnette AU:
    • In one of the early vignettes, Alya attempts to figure out what's "gotten into" her estranged friend by breaking into Marinette's locker. Upon finding a gift in there, she promptly steals it with the intent of delivering it to Adrien on Marinette's behalf — after all, who could it possibly be for other than her crush?! Kagami catches and calls her out on not only invading Marinette's privacy, but leaping to assumptions based off her Theory Tunnelvision and "helping" without being asked for her assistance.
    • During Birds of a Feather, Luka tries to help Marinette by visiting the bakery and informing her mother about how she was called to the principal's office, trying to explain HER side of the story on her behalf. Marinette doesn't take this well, since she's far too used to Lila twisting the facts around — while Luka was trying to counteract that, he still took the chance to explain herself away from her without intending to.
    • Later on in the same arc, Alya decides that she's going to help Lila find just the right club to join, regardless of how little her bestie actually wants her help. Unfortunately, while she's secretly doing this to try manipulating the manipulator, her recruiting Rose for help has the unintentional side-effect of Rose discovering Felix's ballet troupe.
  • Juleka vs. the Forces of the Universe: Alya is dead set on helping Marinette hook up with Adrien even when Marinette herself is questioning whether or not she wants to continue pursuing him. She also ropes the rest of the 'girl squad' into her Zany Schemes while trying to convince them that Marinette is outright incapable of making her own decisions or accomplishing anything on her own.
  • Nymph and the Corrupted Miraculous: Marinette is paraplegic here, and is repeatedly irritated by how others keep trying to assist her at times where she doesn't actually need the help. Most are willing to back off when asked, save for ChloĆ©, who's intent on 'making amends' for how Marinette was hurt helping her in the first place.
  • The One to Make It Stay: Marinette moves on from Adrien, eventually starting to date Luka. Alya misses the memo and continues trying to 'help' her hook up with her former crush, throwing a fit when she refuses to go along with her plans at the museum and staging an 'intervention' in Marinette's bedroom afterwards. Her stubborn refusal to listen to anything her 'bestie' is telling her strains their friendship to the breaking point.
  • Tales of Karmic Lies Aftermath has Damocles attempting to become a superhero and aid Team Miraculous as the 'Dark Owl'... despite his advanced age, lack of physical prowess or powers. This gets particularly bad when Ignoblia shows up, as his attempts to help only succeed in pissing her off and making her vow to destroy Paris in response to the insult of his challenging her.
  • Played for Drama in Weight Off Your Shoulder: Bunnyx turns out to be a Shipper with an Agenda intent on manipulating the timeline so that Marinette and Adrien end up living Happily Ever After. Problem is, she doesn't care about anything else — including the horrors wrought by Hawk Moth and any other villains. She just brushes all that off as stuff that "needs to happen Because Destiny Says So", even though the only one determining that is her.

My Hero Academia

  • Accidental Successor: Sir Nighteye's efforts to help All Might retrieve his Quirk after One for All willingly transfers itself to Izuku turn out to be counterproductive at best and actively undermining All Might's decisions at worst. This is mainly due to Nighteye being a Control Freak who has his own plans as to what should be one with One for All, and eventually leads to their falling-out once Toshinori learns what he's been doing and confronts him.
  • Played for Drama in Butterfly: As Izuku continues to suffer mysterious seizures, his teachers and classmates look after him more and more, tending to his needs. This leaves Izuku feeling even worse, not wanting to be treated like a baby or burden anyone with his troubles.
  • Dekugate: A significant chunk of the titular community have convinced themselves that All Might and David Shields are Star-Crossed Lovers whom are being forced to 'live a lie' by the Hero Commission. Their efforts to 'help' them are not appreciated by the people they've projected all these conspiracy theories onto.
  • A variant happened in Fluffy Hero Izuku when Izuku recalls that when he started out cleaning Dagobah Beach as part of his training, an Instant Fan Club of all things formed to try and help him, which of course would have defeated the purpose of the training exercise.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • Greenfire: Briefly when Rarity argues for an outside picnic as Greenfire tries to hide her on the day a knight comes trying murder Greenfire. This obviously drops when she meets the knight.
  • Celestia trying to save TD at the start of No, I Am NOT a Brony, GET ME OUTTA EQUESTRIA!!! ends up kicking off the plot when it traps him in Equestria. Later in the sequels, TD's pet phoenix also has a habit of trying to help, but ends up causing even more trouble for TD.
  • RealityCheck's Nyxverse: In Nightmare Night & Nyx, Princess Luna wants to throw her own party for Nightmare Night. The courtiers Pomp and Circumstance are convinced this event needs to be treated like a Royal Gala, despite her insistence that she just wants a party. Their 'assistance' includes things like locking all the kids into a nursery with a Misplaced Kindergarten Teacher that treats them all like preschoolers, and casting an aversion spell to keep the upper-class and lower-class guests from mingling.

One Piece

The Owl House

  • Our Week Off Together!: Eda intercepts and throws away the homework assignments that were being sent to Luz. When Luz finally learns about this, she's devastated; having fought really hard to convince Principal Bump to let her into multiple academic tracks, she now has to rush to complete all that homework so she isn't kicked out.

The Powerpuff Girls

  • Villain: Redux: When she realizes that Buttercup is crushing on Robin, Bubbles attempts to help her sister out by revealing how she feels to her. This only succeeds in making things awkward, as Robin doesn't return her sentiments.

Worm

  • Camera Shy (Worm): One side-effect of Taylor's powers in this AU is that she can only see through the eyes of others, not her own. A well-meaning doctor offers to have Panacea come in and heal her, which risks exposing her powers and secret identity instead.
