Trivia / EZ2DJ

  • Creator Breakdown: It is said the song "20000000000" was based on its artist (Croove) being told by an executive (presumably of AmuseWorld) that they needed to meet a sales target of 20 billion won, and getting an ashtray thrown at him by a manager when they didn't meet it. Plus the background video (by Lassoft) has Ache (one of the other visualizers) as the stressed person in it, and the song itself was also That One Boss just to rub it in. A subsequent song, "The Ashtray", may also be a reference to this.
  • Dueling Games:
    • With beatmania IIDX, especially after Konami began to make a larger push for current BEMANI titles in the region. The standard 5-key mode, to an extent, closer resembles the short-lived beatmania III, a spin-off of the original 5-key beatmania games that ran on upgraded hardware, and also incorporated a foot pedal into charts.
    • With DJMAX, though there was overlap in the initial development team of both. What helps is the fact that ez2on was once aided by Neowiz, as seen in the ez2on money card for Neowiz PC Game Cafe. ez2on Reboot:R, likewise, has some similarities to DJMAX Respect in terms of its approach, and especially its PC port DJMAX Respect V. This eventually became full circle when a collaboration between Respect V and REBOOT : R was announced in a DJMAX developer livestream and by the official EZ2ON Twitter account.
  • In Memoriam: The remastered background animation of "Lovely Day" has a few Gratuitous English messages added in tribute to SeeD, the visualizer of this song, who passed away from cancer.
"Wherever a beautiful soul has been there is a trail of beautiful memories. We’ll remember you forever, SeeD."
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: RETRO EZ2ON and EZ2ON REBOOT, by nature of being Defunct Online Video Games. Fortunately, a number of songs previously exclusive to them (as in, not in the arcade games) would be rescued from this status in EZ2ON REBOOT : R.
  • Newbie Boom: REBOOT : R introduced a lot of people, especially those outside of Korea, to the series, being the first game to not only be officially available worldwide, but being released on the immensely popular Steam digital distribution platform.
  • No Export for You:
    • The arcade games have only been released in South Korea.
    • The original EZ2ON and EZ2ON REBOOT were not only exclusive to South Korea, but like many other Korean MMO games, a Korean resident ID number was required to even register for them.
  • Preorder Bonus: Players who purchased the REBOOT : R base game before its Early Access period ended (specifically, before the maintenance period for the official launch of the game) got the CODENAME VIOLET and QUANTUM COMPLEX DLC packs for free. Those who didn't can still get these DLC sets by buying them.
  • Reformulated Game: EZ2ON, rather than attempting to replicate the arcade version's controls, instead uses its own control scheme consisting of the home row keys on a conventional keyboard. It features 4-, 6-, and 8-key modes not found in the arcade version, and while it does have a 5-key mode, it uses different charts instead of reusing the 5K Only charts from the arcade games.
  • Release Date Change:
    • According to the January 2022 developer stream for REBOOT : R, the game was originally scheduled to exit Early Access on March 31, 2022. However it was then delayed, with the March 2022 stream announcing the new release date of April 14 of the same year.
    • Chapter II of the PRESTIGE PASS DLC pass was supposed to release as one set of 15 songs in September 2022. However, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic setting back development, it was split into two parts, with the first part released on September 30 and the second part to be released at a later, currently-undisclosed date.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: Konami, as mentioned, won a patent lawsuit against Amuseworld over the franchise's major similarities to its own beatmania, preventing the production of new cabinets. However, as you may have noticed, the game has managed to survive on software alone. Even the game itself seemed to be acknowledging that this wasn't the end, given that the Engrish on the 7th Trax Bonus Edition Revision A title screen contained the message "Our passionate spirits are still burning and won't be extinguished forever". Oddly, despite the Konami lawsuit, the final few versions of EZ2AC and REBOOT : R manage to get away with implementing early/late note indicators, which were infamously patented by Konami, although with some restrictions; this is notable because DJMAX Respect had such indicators only to remove them due to the patent and DJMAX's rights owners have previously been sued for similar reasons to Amuseworld. The arcade version's implementation is based more on how early/late indicators were done in StepMania (and in turn In the Groove 2), with triangles on either the left or right of the judgement.
  • Sequel First: The game did not receive any international releases until REBOOT : R, 22 years after the original EZ2DJ and 13 years after the original ez2on. In fact, by the time of REBOOT : R, the arcade EZ2DJ/AC line was already retired.
  • Sequel Gap: If only counting EZ2ON games, then REBOOT : R was released eight years after the previous EZ2ON game.
  • Similarly Named Works:
    • DJMAX also features a song called "Fallen Angel".
    • beatmania IIDX also features a song called "Holic".
    • "The Back of Beyond" is also the stage 5 second half theme from Crimzon Clover, albeit without the "the".
  • Troubled Production: Final is full of this. The previous lead developer FOX-B had stepped down because he had overworked himself during the development of Night Traveler and Time Traveler wasn't interested in working on EZ2AC anymore. The rest of the team remained, but then their distributor pretty much requested that they put a new full release together... in a month. The "final" product shipped out was an Obvious Beta, with a very small number of new songs (including a few, such as "Gehenna", which were just secret songs on Time Traveller unlocked for regular play), an incomplete user interface theme (a few elements, such as the failure screen, were reused verbatim from Time Traveler, and the loading screen was just a static slide), and bugs. Realizing how poor the release was, FOX-B decided to return to the team. Final began to see some improvements and a bit more content in subsequent patches. The game received an Updated Re-release, Final EX, in August 2020.
  • Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things: "Sudden Death", the infamous "tiny timing windows with extremely harsh lifebar" track, was removed from multiplayer mode in REBOOT : R because of too many room hosts picking the song, causing everyone else to flee the room.

Non-"trope" Trivia:

  • EZ2DJ arcade games run on Windows 98, even long after Microsoft abandoned support for it in favor of Windows 2000, XP, and 7.
