Shout Out / The Atomic Time of Monsters

Go To

  • First and foremost, many of the kaiju are expies of famous pop culture monsters:
    • Tyrantis is Godzilla, with his personality harkening back to the late Showa movies, as well as the personality of Showa-era Gamera. His name is a portmanteau of "Tyrannosaurus Rex" and "Gigantis", which is one of the Big G's nicknames.
    • Ahuul is Rodan, though his Hungry Menace attitude brings to mind Gyaos.
    • The Myrmidants are the giant ants from Them!.
    • Girtabane is The Black Scorpion.
    • Tyranta is Ogra from Gorgo.
    • MechaTyrantis is MechaGodzilla, though his appearance is based on Cyber-Zilla from Godzilla: The Series.
    • Tricerak is Anguirus.
    • Gorgalisk is Manda, with personality traits of Mothra and King Caesar.
    • Bobo is both Kumonga and the titular monster of Tarantula!, with the personality of Mothra. Her name comes from "Boris the Spider" by The Who.
    • Chlorespa is one for the monster wasps from Monster From Green Hell.
    • Mantiresia is The Deadly Mantis.
    • Crustakra is the Aggregate form of Destoroyah.
    • Tyrantor is Minya.
    • Kutulusca is Gezora from Space Amoeba.
    • Burudon is not only Baragon, but one for every monster conceived from its suit (Pagos, Neronga, Gabora...).
    • Nastadyne is Megalon.
    • Karamtor is Gigan.
    • Herakoschei is Cherno Alpha, though its role is one for MOGUERA. Parts of its design are also inspired by Robby the Robot.
    • Gorale is what happens when the english translation of Gojira (Gorilla Whale) is taken literally.
    • The Writhing Flesh is one for many of the Body Horror bosses from the Resident Evil franchise.
    • Pathogen is Destoroyah, though his destructive ways are more akin to Showa Mechagodzilla.
    • Minerva is Nancy Archer, as well as every other super-sized human monster movie.
    • Promythigor is King Kong, though he's meant to invoke giant ape monsterdom as a whole.
    • Atomoton is Jet Jaguar.
    • Ullawdra is a combination of Biollante and Audrey II.
    • Kemlasulla is a biological take on the tripods from The War of the Worlds.
    • Sombarvot is the multi-legged lizards from John Carter of Mars.
    • Pleprah is the Giant Purple People Eater.
    • Dorazor is King Ghidorah.
  • Dr. Wilhelmina Lerna is named after Mina Murray, one of the main characters of Dracula.
  • Gwen Valentine's surname is an homage to Jill Valentine from the Resident Evil franchise.
  • Henry Robertson's first name is a shout-out to Henry Fairfield Osborne, who coined the name Tyrannosaurus Rex.'
  • The whole story takes place in The '50s, the golden age of atomic monster movies, and the Superquake hits in 1954, the original release year of the Big G himself.
  • The place that Tyrantis comes from is known as Hollow Mountain.
  • Dr. Lerna is a student of Hausen University.
  • Upon seeing the Hollow World for the first time, Lerna compares it to something out of Jules Verne.
  • The two scientists in Nevada, Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Deemer, are named after the two main scientists from Tarantula!.
  • Chapter 8 of Volume 1 is titled "The Prize Fighter of Antiquity", which is the phrase The New York Times used to describe T-Rex in the past.
    • Likewise, Chapter 20 uses another New York Times T-Rex slogan, "The Most Formidable Fighting Animal".
  • One minor character is Roger Gordon, a particularly unflattering homage to b-movie directors Roger Corman and Bert I. Gordon.
  • Griffith Park is a real-life location in California where many movies have been filmed.
  • U.N.N.O. is a concept taken almost wholesale from King Kong vs. Godzilla.
  • The third part of Volume 1 is called "Tyrantis vs. the Monster of Party Beach".
  • The Reptodites are more benevolent versions of the Reptites from Chrono Trigger.
  • At one point, Dr. Rockwell mentions actors known as Boris Legosi and Lon Carradine.
  • When talking about bonding with kaiju, Gwen proposes that it could make the team a sort of Monster Squad.
  • Every pilot of MechaTyrantis is named after two characters each from the Jurassic Park franchise.
  • At the beginning of Volume 2, the team is attacked on their boat by a shark-like monster named Old Meg. Perhaps inevitably, Henry asks if they could have used a bigger boat.
  • Rinko Tsuburaya is named after both Rinko Kikuchi (Mako Mori from Pacific Rim) and the Father of Tokusatsu himself, Eiji Tsuburaya. Her being the daughter of a famous deceased scientist is from Emiko Yamane from Godzilla (1954).
  • Perry Martin is named after two famous roles of Raymond Burr: namely, Perry Mason and Steve Martin from, of course, Godzilla: King of the Monsters! (1956).
  • The performance before The Thunder Lizards is Makoto and Nagisa Ito, a pair of identical sisters who sing in perfect sync. It's more than obvious that they're stand-ins for the Shobijin that worship Mothra.
  • Another band alongside the Thunder Lizards is The Cashews.
  • The Thunder Lizards are based on The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper. The song they sing for Tyrantis takes some lyrics from the theme of The Godzilla Power Hour, and according to Word of God, it's sung close to the tune of "The Godzilla March" from Godzilla vs. Gigan.
  • The fourth chapter of Volume 2 is called Giant Monsters All Out Attack.
  • Nastadyne, aside from his very existence being a nod to the Sentai genre, has his Burning Justice Mode, which is based mostly off of the Shining/Burning Finger move from Mobile Fighter G Gundam.
  • People dying and/or passing out trying to pilot Herakoschei is based on a minor plot detail from Pacific Rim.
  • The Siberian Monster Zone is based off of the Lawless Monster Zone from Ultraman.
  • Promythigor is described by Clark as "a thinking animal".
  • The last moments of the fight between Tyrantis and Promythigor contains homages to the ones in King Kong vs. Godzilla (the obvious Primate Versus Reptile premise, Promythigor attempting to break Tyrantis' jaw, a monster sliding down a hill to get the other), and Godzilla vs. Megalon (Tyrantis gliding on his tail to kick another monster).
  • After the Time Skip, two events are brought up that reference films that came out between 1954 and 1958. They involve Chicago getting attacked by giant locusts and a giant bird in New York.
  • Issac Rossum's first name is directly based off of Isaac Asimov, who wrote the Three Laws of Robotics. His last name is taken from Rossum's Universal Robots.
  • The entire part with the Martian kaiju is full of references to The War of the Worlds, from metal transportation cylinders to biological look-alikes of the tripods/saucers to the usage of the word ulla.
  • The last part of Volume 2 is a Whole-Plot Reference of Destroy All Monsters, particularly the final battle with all of the monsters fighting the enemy on their island.
  • The concept of Yamaneon being somewhat sapient is based on the premise of The Monolith Monsters.
  • Tyrantis getting a Super Mode after a near death experience to defeat Pathogen is a twist on the climatic scene of Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). Instead of destroying everything around him and killing his foe like Godzilla does, Tyrantis heals every other kaiju, and reserves his punishment for Pathogen alone.
