Shout Out / Sunset Overdrive

Go To

  • Sunset City is a mix of Pacific City and Jet Set Radio's depiction of Tokyo.
  • Fizzie looks like a cross between a Raving Rabbid and Sackboy.
  • Assassin's Creed:
    • The The Killer Jacket.
    • The Synchronization mechanic of the games is referenced in the Harbor binoculars dialogue:
Player: Okay, I'm here. Do I synchronize now, or what? Oh, wrong game.
  • If you customize the character to look like a Bushido girl scout trooper (Female - Slender Body Type, Pigtails Hair, Troop Bushido Shirt/Shorts, Nautical Shoes (or Floyd Shoes)) and play as her, you're being mistaken for being Lara Croft (especially her Legend incarnation).
  • The Dirty Harry is a model 29 .44 magnum revolver used on several extremely unlucky punks.
  • The Dude is a bowling ball launcher. The tutorial even urges you to abide by it.
  • Captain Ahab, a harpoon based launcher that will impale and kill an enemy in a single shot, or deal massive damage to a larger specimen. It will also spill a delicious puddle of Overcharge to distract enemies.
  • While using the Kitty Cannon, a weapon that relies on the awesome power of a murderous pet robo-dog, your character will happily reference Doge.
  • When writing a virus for you, Sam looks up information on Reddit.
  • While searching for clues regarding a crane you need to operate your character asks "What would Batman do?" They find a note and read it with his growly voice.
  • The Player, when Air Dash is being tutorial-ed, they mention GameFAQs to note how good the tutorial is:
Player: I didn't even have to check Game FAQs.
  • The players sputters a few non-sequiturs while high on medicine.
  • During the Fake-Out Fade-Out, the protagonist walks in and complains that ending the game like this will incur NeoGAF's wrath.
  • "The Most Epic Quest for EXP" is one gigantic reference to Dungeons & Dragons, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Lord of the Rings, and every other fantasy-based work out there (Hodor/Hardcore being perhaps the most obvious one.) Your character continuously calls out King Ignatius' blatant plagiarism.
    • During the quest, one of the faction members back at the base exclaims "Praise the Sun!"
    • One of your amps is called "Winter is Coming" and you encounter a guy named Hardcore who can only say his name.
    • King Ignacious sits atop a throne of foam swords.
  • Similarly, an early sidequest where the player has to assist a local moonshiner is one long extended Shout-Out to Breaking Bad with the meth replaced with alcohol.
    • One of the people you run into is a man named Jess, who wears a beanie and swears a lot. When you throw an explosive barrel at some Scabs, he says "Yeah! Science, bitch!"
  • The portals that can be a respawn animation or something that saves you from a long fall are colored orange and blue, much like Portal.
  • "Welcome to the pigeon dome"
  • When ramming someone with the triceratops head, the player mentions that nothing like this happens in Goat Simulator.
  • After receiving some pithy encouragement, the player says that this is Sunset Overdrive, not E.T.
  • One of the things the player says after delivering a bomb is "Don't feed it after midnight."
  • The player sometimes says "Warrior needs food, badly!" when low on health.
  • After your band has finished playing, the leading man floats away with an umbrella.
  • One mission in the Mooil Rig DLC is given by a person who is inspired by Norman Bates of Psycho. The player even says that anyone under thirty probably won't get the reference.
  • While rolling around in the electric ball in the Fallen Machines DLC, the player sometimes says "I'm the King of All Cosmos" and "This is too Metroid-y". You can also perform a Spin Dash while in the ball (and yes, the move is actually named "Spin Dash" in-game, so it's definitely not a coincidence).
  • One respawn animation has you coming in a car that looks like a DeLorean, which a Marty look-alike then takes.
  • A member from the scabs and Las Catrinas have a forbidden love, which has caused the deaths of many people. The player even remarks that it's a Shakespearian tragedy.
  • Fizzie makes references to both 2001: A Space Odyssey and Terminator.
  • While observing a large swarm of OD, the Player might breathlessly observe, "They do move in herds!"
  • The Player will occasionally brag that they should be cast in a Gymkata remake while scaling buildings.
  • There's an iced banana stand near the roller coaster at the amusement park which can be destroyed, and doing so drops a bit of cash. There's always money in the banana stand.
  • In the DLC called The Dawn of the Rise of the Fallen Machines, after you defeat B-Win, he can clearly be seen giving a thumbs up Terminator Style.
  • The name of the above DLC itself is a refrence to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen.
  • One of the respawn animations features the player arriving in a Dimension X transport module.
  • Lou smashing Snackwrap and Fiona trying to restrain him is a reference to the fax smashing scene from Office Space.
  • Stanley's choice to rename Sunset City for his comic references the Twilight series and its female fandom:
Stanley: I need a good name for what Sunset City has become. Something darker...like Twilight City!
Oh man, that's good, and it appeals to girls too!
  • Bomb Delivery's bomb placement voice lines references:
    • Oregon Trail's dysentery deaths:
Player: You died of dysentery! I mean bombing.
    • To Bomberman:
Player: I will make a Bomberman reference but I don't wanna get sued.
    • To Speed:
Player: Defuse the bomb if I go too slow? It's kinda like that movie about the bus...or was it a boat?
  • In the "Smash Crates" challenge, the players may reference Portal's companion cube:
Player: Lotta crate killing. This isn't the game if you want cubes to be companions.
  • When forging Excalamune, when needing to quench it and being faced with OD, the player references "Lucky Charms" commercials that have the leprechaun say, "They're after me lucky charms!", where the player says:
    They're after me lucky sword!
  • The Eazzy Pizzy pizza of "Veg Out", a vegetarian and cannabis joke, and a reference to Cheech & Chong, as its description is: "Dave's not here, man...". It's made of cheese, mushroom, peppers, olives, onion, tomato
  • Demolition Man and the three seashells for its bathrooms are referenced as Portal Potties are made by "Three Shells Sanitation".
  • Cthulhu Mythos of H. P. Lovecraft: The Kuturu sushi restaurant billboard near Traversal Challenge #7, slogan: You'll Love Our Craft, icon / mascot of an anime-style octopus/squid-like-being with closed eyes, two slender tentacles and also multiple tentacles with suckers.
