Designs

• One of the first Pokémon you'll likely encounter while surfing is the Commando Pokémon Ramboyant, who play war with their beloved machine gun-like sticks.
• There's a line of clown Pokémon named Barnom and Baelee.
• Illuxury, this game’s stand-in for Celebi, is a living Touhou Project reference, complete with being a red-clad Miko a la series protagonist Reimu.
• Blue Rudey (and by extent its pre-evolution) is a homage to the Blue Meanies.
• Sidficious is named after Sid Vicious.
• Swazzage is confirmed to be a nod to Punch and Judy, with its overly violent slapstick and the mixed reactions it garners referencing the Values Dissonance arising from the show's surprisingly violent subject matter.
• latenight has described Crustazer as "a blatant ripoff/loving homage to Ebirah".
• Respectre's gravestone shell having an F on it is a reference to the legendary "Press F to pay respects" meme, which originated from Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
• The Loomen line is heavily based on The Moomins.
• Wormacho is a homage to Earthworm Jim.
• Olchap is based on Oddjob's razor-sharp Dastardly Dapper Derby.
• Mt. Noot's name is derivative of Pingu's "Noot noot!".
• Lamyglama has several references packed into it; its design is confirmed to be inspired by Dr. Seuss's art style, its front sprite pose is modeled after the infamous photo of John Lennon strutting, and the fact that it's inexplicably able to Soar is a reference to the song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".
• In addition to also being inspired by Seuss, the Odditten line was also designed with the Ziggy Stardust era of David Bowie in mind.
• The Umberjerk line was made by latenight as a kid, and was based on the Hockey Mask and Chainsaw scene from The Simpsons episode "Cape Feare".
• In addition to being based on Kaiju suits, Casanocte is designed after the Kaiju Destoroyah. Its category is even "Destroyer".
• There's also a King Ghidorah-based Pokémon in the form of the secret Mist Stone evolution to Ganzerker, Ganzorah. Its shiny form is even a hue of gold.
• Both Slowhog and the Happig line have green shinies, which when combined with their porcine designs reference Green Eggs and Ham. The Happig line's shiny palette is also based on the Game Boy's iconic green monochrome screen.
• Soaro is a Composite Character of Sonic the Hedgehog, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon, with its name being derived from those three characters'^note Sonic, Crash, and Spyro. Additionally, its shiny coloration is based on the Jazz design, which is most notable for appearing on Solo's Jazz cups.

Other

• Among the newly introduced moves is Bibbidi-Bop, a Fairy-type multi-hit move.
• Route 34 adds a Mini-Boss trainer in the form of Hunk Chad, whose name and design are a reference to the infamous Chad meme.
• If you surf far enough north of Cianwood, you can find and battle the game’s Superboss, who is none other than Yotsuba&!.
• Examining the Moperdor on Route 39's farm has the player refer to it as "Good dog. Best friend."
• With the exception of Saturdays, the Actor in Lavender Town's TV Tower will dress up as different movie characters, many of which are Captain Ersatzes of iconic movie and TV characters. These include the T-800 Model 101 Version 2.4, a Xenomorph, Sadako Yamamura, and on Sundays, straight-up ALF, complete with a team of cat-like Pokémon.
• Speaking of the Lavender TV Tower, one of the trainers in Lavender Town's Gym is dressed in a suit that looks near-identical to Showa-era Godzilla.
