  • Beastars: Ironically, Tem's Killer, the Arc Villain for the Murder Incident Solution Arc. Despite being a major villain, in canon, he receives a lot of Character Development meant to show that he wasn't a monster, and there was a good person underneath his actions and circumstances that led to the killing of someone he considered a dear friend. In fanfics, though, he's more often portrayed as a mindless monster that killed Tem sometimes out of jealousy, sometimes in a spur of the moment decision, but always much more monstrously than in canon and is often more willing to kill innocents than in canon. He is also rarely on the receiving end of the Alas, Poor Villain treatment Legoshi and Louis give him.
  • David's ripperdoc from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners seems to get a bad rep in the fanfic community. Granted, while his credentials are dubious and his morals are beyond questionable in canon, he nonetheless puts on an air of professionalism, especially when he gives David vials of immunosuppressants to go with the exoskeleton near the series' end, advising him to use them sparingly. In fanfiction, however, the narrative will go out of its way to imply or outright state how crooked he really is, some of which state that he grafted the Sandevisdan on David, expecting him to die later so he can rip it off and sell it for a quick buck, among other things. This usually also involves David becoming a patient of Viktor Vektor, the much more professional Nice Guy ripperdoc from Cyberpunk 2077.
  • Digimon Adventure:
    • Tai(chi)/Sora shippers have a recurring habit of demonising Yamato/Matt by either portraying him as an unfaithful man to Sora, an abuser who attempts to beat up Sora just because she hung out with Tai a bit more often, or someone who prioritises other activities over his girlfriend to the point that Sora feels more closure in hanging out with Tai than Matt. Some even go as far as demonizing Matt to the point that he is willing to beat up Sora and even murder Tai himself. These fanfics are largely frowned upon by many Digimon fans, complaining that even Matt wouldn't be this out-of-character.
    • Whenever the author either invests in Daikari (Davis/Kari) or Takari (TK/Kari) shipping fics, you can expect the rival (TK and Davis respectively) to be demonized as callous jerks who are not above sexually assaulting Kari just to have the male love interest rescue her and became an Official Couple, with the rival ending up either being humiliated or even dying, completely ignoring their experiences as a Digidestined.
    • Even Ken and Wormmon of all characters got this treatment on occasion in the show's heyday, with some fanfics portraying them as homicidal. Sure, Ken was pretty cruel as the Kaiser, but Wormmon never was!
  • Dragon Ball:
    • In canon, Yamcha and Bulma are depicted as being on good terms after their breakup and he's fine with her hooking up with Vegeta. But because the circumstances of their breakup are never elaborated on, it's not uncommon for fanfic authors to apply this to Yamcha. At best, he'll be portrayed as an irresponsible boyfriend who drives Bulma away with his unfaithfulness. At worst, he'll be portrayed as an unrepentant Jerkass who abuses Bulma and tries to kill Vegeta and/or Bulma when she breaks it off with him.
    • Chi-Chi. In canon, she can be an overbearing person whose Education Mama tendencies can reach annoying and illogical levels, which the anime plays up. She is also a dedicated mom and wife who dearly loves her family and most of her actions are done out of fear of them being hurt or killed. This last part is thrown out the window in many fanworks which turn up her negative attributes to the point that she hates her husband and doesn't care if he gets killed and abuses Gohan. Even the Funi dub and Super tend to play up her worst traits while ignoring her good ones.
  • Fairy Tail: All over the fandom.
    • Both sides of the Natsu/Lucy and Natsu/Lisanna divide pull this on the other. Lisanna gets derailed into a jealous harpy out to ruin Lucy and Natsu's relationship while poor Lucy is Slut-shamed and is treated as a Replacement Goldfish for Lisanna.
    • Natsu's canon Jerk with a Heart of Gold characterization is pushed to straight up Jerkass in alternate Lucy pairings, and he's often made to be abusive on top of that.
    • Jellal gets this from most alternate Erza pairings, especially Natsu/Erza, for being her canon Love Interest, even though he'd willingly step aside if Erza did get with someone else. They keep harping on the stuff he did in canon while brainwashed, while whitewashing Ultear's crimes against him to boot.
    • Some rabid Erza/Jellal fans even go after poor Simon, whose only crimes were getting killed by Jellal as a Heroic Sacrifice to protect Erza and carrying an unrequited torch for Erza.
    • Juvia often gets this for liking/being in love with Gray. Canonically, while she is a Clingy Jealous Girl around him and people (read: women and oddly, Lyon) close to him, all in all, she's a sweet and caring person. Also, most, if not all of her antics concerning him, are pure comic relief, and later on in the manga, she does tone down her obsessive behavior. But that doesn't matter to some non-Gray/Juvia shippers (mostly Gray/Lucy fans) along with the facts Juvia is actually friends with other women (including the ones she thinks are her "love rivals", such as Lucy) and does care for the guild and all its members. They just zero in on her obsessive part of her personality and slam her for being a total creepy bitch who won't ask Gray out like a normal person (completely ignoring how she attempted to hang out with him a couple of times after she joined Fairy Tail and asked him out to lunch) and needs to die. Or get together with Lyon Vastia since Sherry is (conveniently and blessedly) out of the picture. One fic has Juvia drugging Gray into loving her and eventually driving him to suicide out of despair and the author actually claims it's something she would do in canon!
    • While Lucy's dad, Jude Heartfilia was a very flawed parent, he did love his daughter and tried to reconcile with her after losing his fortune and Taking A Level In Kindness. Fics will often turn him into a Corrupt Corporate Executive criminal and flat-out Abusive Parent. It's just disturbing how many fics have him raping his own daughter!
    • Parodied In-Universe in The Worst Play Ever, where a stage play portrays Fairy Tail, who are usually good-hearted despite being Destructive Saviours, as a dark guild that deliberately causes destruction and torment to various towns. The only exceptions are Lucy (who is the play's protagonist and gets forced to join the guild), Wendy (who is also forced to join), and Laxus (who actually gets a Draco in Leather Pants treatment in regard to the Battle of Fairy Tail, much to the real Laxus's disgust). Unsurprisingly, most of the guild isn't happy at this portray or any of the other artistic licenses.
  • Girls und Panzer
    • Some fanfics portray Maho in a significantly more negative light, as well as more openly hostile to Miho, although it is in large part due to the authors not reading Little Army and not knowing that she does what she does for Miho's sake. This has mostly died down with time, but there are still occasions in which Maho is portrayed more negatively than in canon.
    • Shiho, while largely devoid of sympathetic qualities in the anime, often comes off as even worse in fan works, to the point of being cartoonishly evil. Her disowning Miho is commonly used as a plot point in fan fiction, resulting in her becoming Hated by All if she isn't already.
    • The student council sometimes gets bashed for trying to pressgang Miho into the tankery team under apparent threat of expulsion, even after the fact that the school was at risk of being shut down was revealed. The three of them, especially Momo Kawashima, also come under fire for their initial incompetence in running the team, since with Anzu being too lazy and Yuzu being too much of an Extreme Doormat, Momo ended up taking charge despite being an atrocious gunner and a lackluster commander.
  • High School D×D fics have a notable and visible sub-genre of fics that do this to Rias Gremory. These fics insist that Rias allowed Issei to die from (often Draco in Leather Pants troped at the same time) Raynare and mistreating her peerage in general. This trend is generally believed to have originated from the anime where the main characters were all shown off in episode 1 and thus makes it seem like she was watching Issei, and it not only ignores such things as her canonical closeness and kindness to her peerage (with many foils to demonstrate what more neutral or negative treatment looks like), but also the fact that if Rias really wanted Issei in her peerage so badly to set up his own death she'd have many other ways of getting him in her peerage (up to and including just asking him).
  • In many, many Kikyo/Inuyasha fanfics from Inuyasha, Kagome is turned into a shrill Alpha Bitch who bullies the eponymous half-demon every chance she gets, by making him "Sit" at even minor things like simply looking at Kikyo instead of her. Inuyasha eventually dumps her in favor of the revived Kikyo, or sends her back to her own time and covers up the well. It's gotten so bad there are actual groups where Kagome haters join to write bad fanfiction about Kagome being a Tsundere at best and a Alpha Bitch at worst. Likewise, in many Kagome/Sesshomaru fics, Inuyasha will be turned into a selfish Jerkass Fetishized Abuser to Kagome, who bullies the sweet angelic Sesshomaru by using the Wind Scar on him, or slashing him with his claws until he bleeds to death. There are actual groups on fanfiction.net that are dedicated to not demonizing either Inuyasha or Kagome.
  • Naruto:
    • Kakashi is one of the most (if not the most) bashed character in fanfiction for reasons not related to shipping. Most of the fanbase's hatred towards him was due to the belief that because he taught Sasuke his signature move, Chidori, as well as giving him intensive taijutsu training, while only teaching Naruto and Sakura the tree-climbing exercise (which improves chakra control, a vitally useful skill), he favors Sasuke over them (not, you know, the fact that Sasuke needs all the advanced training he can get to face off against Gaara without getting killed, not to mention that as the only other person in the village with a Sharingan he is the only one suited to training Sasuke).
    • The adult villagers of Konoha as a whole suffer from this in many a fanfiction. In canon their mistreatment of Naruto amounted to sometimes talking bad about him behind his back, urging their children to not associate with him, and on rare occasions openly insulting him, but mostly just shunning him (Naruto developing into a prankster in an effort to make them pay any attention to him). In fanfiction though, Naruto is often the subject of routine savage beatings from roving bands of bloodthirsty villagers, and even the target of attempted assassinations. And where in canon the Konoha villagers are depicted as mostly decent people traumatized by the Nine Tails killing so many of their fellow villagers (and most of them shown outright coming around to trusting Naruto by the end of Part 1 of the series thanks to his accomplishments), in fanfiction they are often depicted as one-dimensional and hate-filled to the extreme even after the time skip. This sort of depiction leads to many a story where Naruto turns against the village or leaves it as a child, or where the villagers behavior is depicted as irredeemable.
    • While Sasuke has done more than a few morally-questionable or outright evil things as a result of his desire for vengeance against Itachi and later Konoha, it's common for many fans to portray him as outright lacking any redeeming qualities, with fanfics having Naruto or Sakura imprison him for the rest of his life or kill him, after some event, canon or otherwise, causes them to decide he is Beyond Redemption.
    • Ever since the manga's Distant Finale confirmed multiple Official Couples, numerous Die for Our Ship fics have appeared to demonize one part of the couple so that their husband or wife can either sympathetically cheat on them or divorce them.
  • Saki: The eponymous character's estranged older sister gets this. It's established early on that their parents are separated and the two are not on speaking terms, (which is why Saki hopes to compete against Teru), and late in the anime, Teru denies having a sister, but Teru's personality remains an enigma for much of the series. It's understandable that fans would need to fill in the gaps, but it can be hard to swallow her being portrayed as not only hating Saki (something that canon disproves around the time of the finals), but is also emotionally unstable and even violent in some fanfics.
  • Soul Eater:
    • While Spirit Albarn had numerous flaws as a husband that led to the breakup of his marriage and strained his relationship with his daughter Maka, he is nevertheless shown to be a genuinely loving father who is fiercely protective of his daughter and wants to reconnect with her, as well as a highly powerful and talented Death Scythe, many fics often portray him as being an incompetent and alcoholic moron whose success depended solely on meisters like Dr. Stein and Maka's mother as well as an Abusive Parent who is physically violent to his daughter, is completely uncaring towards her, and there are even fics that depict him sexually abusing her!
    • Maka's absentee mother often receives this as well, sometimes as a direct response to the treatment Spirit gets. While canon describes her as a genuinely talented Meister and a victim of her husband's infidelity, as well as stating she is travelling the world, it's not uncommon for fics to depict her as abandoning Maka outright with no intention of returning, as well as being an Abusive Parent who turned Maka against her father and emotionally manipulates her. Many Spirit/Stein fics also portray her as a shallow and vindictive Alpha Bitch who manipulated Spirit and turned him against Stein as well. Unlike Spirit, however, who at least has screen presence to show his actual personality, almost everything known about Maka's mother comes from what other people say about her, the two major sources of which (Spirit and Maka) are highly biased themselves.
  • Coco from the Yes! Pretty Cure 5 duology and Power of Hope ~PreCure Full Bloom~ is one of the four major fairy partners from this group of works and probably one of the most hated people in the Pretty Cure franchise. The hatred stems from the Student/Teacher Romance between his human form and Nozomi/Cure Dream. While some of the fandom being Squicked by this is very understandable, there are some who categorize Coco as a groomer and desperately hope that Toei will one day sink that ship. Not helping matters is that episode six of Power of Hope reveals that Coco had been watching Nozomi grow up and achieve her dream from a distance and ultimately backed away once she did, reasoning that him being a king and her a teacher on Earth and they weren't meant to be together; the fandom saw this as a groomer being completely uninterested in a former lover who grew up too old for him to enjoy and dumping her. This hatred towards Coco is so bad that fans are hoping that his marriage to Nozomi completely falls apart, Nozomi somehow realizes he's a creeper and abandons him for Rin.
