  • The Commitments: When Jimmy auditions musicians for the band, one of them plays "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", to which Jimmy, who's not enjoying it, says, "Yeah, I know what you mean."
  • In Shaun of the Dead, Shaun turns on the TV and flips through several channels, the dialogue of which flows from one channel to the next. One of the channels is VH-1, which is playing the music video for "Panic".

Literature

  • In My Dark Vanessa, Vanessa remembers listening to the Smiths with Jenny. She'd never heard of them but pretended she had so Jenny wouldn't think she was a loser.
  • In The Perks of Being a Wallflower, protagonist Charlie dubs mixtapes, and he states that his favorite song is "Asleep". The song itself was included in the film version of the novel.
  • In Beautiful Music for Ugly Children, Gabe lists "How Soon is Now" as an example of a B-side that was a big hit.
  • In Eleanor & Park, Park gives Eleanor a mixtape with some of The Smiths' songs on it.

Live-Action TV

  • Black Mirror has one episode named "Hang the DJ", and sure enough, the corresponding part of "Panic" plays during its final scene.
  • Young Sheldon: In "A Baby Shower and Testosterone-Rich Banter", Connor McAllister says that the Smiths are his favorite band.

Video Games

  • Killer7: Numerous The Smiths song titles are used at some point in the game, which is natural given the names of the protagonists.
  • One mission in Marvel Puzzle Quest is titled "Big Mouth Strikes Again".

Western Animation

  • Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends: There's a telegraph friend called Morsey who talks in either Morse code, or lyrics from The Smiths songs.
  • Gravity Falls: The fourth episode's title is a reference to The Smiths song "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle".
