Recap / Total Drama: "Brunch of Disgustingness"

Go To

The remaining campers are divided into teams of boys and girls for an eating contest.

Tropes:

  • Aborted Arc: Chris tells the final ten campers that the eliminated among them would form a jury to determine who wins the competition; however, the jury concept never gets brought up again in Island and wouldn't be used until the Action finale and even then it was only used due to a tie.
  • Anchovies Are Abhorrent: When Chris serves pizza with jellyfish, grasshoppers, and live anchovies, Lindsay claims she hates anchovies.
  • Battle of the Sexes: How Chris describes the episode.
  • Blowing a Raspberry: Once Chris announces that the last pre-merge challenge will see the teams shuffled to create a battle of the sexes, Duncan winks at Heather and Lindsay, which Lindsay answers by blowing a raspberry his way.
  • Bowdlerise: In the American airing, the beef testicles are referred to as meatballs. The point still kinda gets across (for older viewers, anyway), because they didn't remove the shot of a bull cowering and whimpering in terror, Geoff's comment about bulls being castrated for medical reasons, or Gwen's line, "I'm digesting a bull's precious cohonies! You're gonna eat!"
  • Breather Episode: The first of only two episodes this season after the introductory episode not to feature an elimination.
  • Burping Contest: Geoff is made captain of the boys team because he completely outdoes Owen with a tremendous burp.
  • Creepy Cockroach: To settle the tie and end the game once and for all, Owen and Leshawna are forced to drink the most shot glasses of blended cockroach. Owen wins, but it’s clear that not even he enjoyed it. Leshawna kickstarts a Vomit Chain Reaction.
  • Cultural Translation: Before the eating challenge starts, Owen declares, "I'll eat anything! Even my gitch if I have to!" The word "gitch" is Canadian slang for "underwear", and was changed to "drawers" in the American airing.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Bridgette is the focal character of this episode as she moves to the girls' cabin and has to deal with her bickering teammates.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Heather overreacts to something Leshawna said and gives up playing nice to try to get Bridgette to side with her by dividing the cabin in two. She admits in the confessional that she probably overreacted.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Trent really doesn't like broccoli.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: After both Bridgette and DJ refuse to eat the intended final meal, Chef laments the lack of appreciation for his hard work cooking dolphin.
  • Easily Forgiven: After briefly arguing about Geoff helping Bridgette during the first round, the guys immediately make up and go back to working as a team without complaint. Given what she's been seeing on the girls team, Bridgette is stunned.
  • Eating Contest: Crossed with invoked Nausea Fuel.
  • Eating Shoes: One of the "dishes" the campers had to eat was a flip flop with silicone sealant.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even Owen is horrified at the prospect of drinking shots of blended cockroach juice for the tiebreaker. He manages to drink more than Leshawna, but faints immediately afterward.
  • Evil Laugh: Chris and Chef keep snickering when the campers ask where the food is.
  • Fly in the Soup: When the fourth dish, French bunion soup, is revealed, it is surrounded by flies. A subsequent dish is literal garbage stew.
  • Force Feeding: Trent's parents did this to him when he was going to eat broccoli. He tells DJ and Geoff to do this to him during the second round. It works, though Trent freaks during it. He later insists he was only playing it up for the camera.
  • Friend to All Living Things: DJ and Bridgette can manage to justify eating stuff like live crickets and worms, but they draw the line at dolphins. Bridgette is especially the most passionate on her love for dolphins, stating as a surfer, she swims with them. This in turn inspires DJ to back off from eating the dolphin wieners.
  • Gross-Out Show: Particularly present in this episode, with all the dishes and vomiting that we see.
  • Hope Spot: After nine disgusting courses, the last one appears easy to eat, as it seems to be just ordinary hot dogs. Then it turns out they're made of dolphin meat.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: Extreme Omnivore Owen initially gobbles down the "beef meatballs", only for him recoil when he's told that he ate bull testicles, causing the guys to lose the first dish.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When Bridgette refuses to eat the dolphin wieners, Heather (obnoxious as she's being about it) is right that the dolphin is already dead and that refusing to eat won't bring it back.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: Trent instructs the guys to force-feed him disgusting pizza so they can win the round. Part of his instruction is to ignore whatever he says to go back on it. And so the guys ignore it when Trent tries to convince them he was just joking.
  • The Last Straw: The final meal, blended cockroach shots, is this shortly after being ingested, triggering a Vomit Chain Reaction from Leshawna and all the males.
  • Lost Food Grievance: When Bridgette enters the girls' cabin, the first thing she hears is Leshawna yelling at Heather for eating her pudding pockets.
  • Masochist's Meal: Nine of them served by Chef.
  • Moment Killer: Chris interrupts before Geoff and Bridgette can kiss.
  • Mood Whiplash: Geoff is forlorn after Bridgette leaves the cabin. Trent then accidentally knocks him over with his guitar.
  • Neutral No Longer: In the beginning of the episode, Bridgette is forced to choose between siding with Heather and Lindsay or with Gwen and Leshawna. She picked the latter because of her friendship with them, while also gaining Heather's grudge. Bridgette later cemented her position against Heather after she tried to make her eat the dolphin wieners.
  • No Matter How Much I Beg: Trent insists that the other guys force feed him to ensure they win, no matter how much he pleads. When they follow through with this, he insists he was just kidding, to no avail.
  • Only Sane Woman: Bridgette throughout the episode for the girls team, the only one trying to get everyone to cooperate.
  • Share the Male Pain: The boys can't complete the "Beef Balls" dish after learning they are literally that, giving the girls the upper hand. Even Chris sympathizes with them!
Chris: It's the hardest thing a man can do.
  • Shout-Out: The beef testicles dish comes from an episode of Fear Factor.
  • Single Tear: DJ sheds one at having to eat the beef testicles.
  • Slasher Smile: Chef gives one when Chris says that the contestants will be spending time with him while one of the other teams are on a 5-star resort.
  • Smelly Skunk: During a montage, one of the meals is a skunk’s smell literally squeezed into liquid form, then make into a martini drink.
  • Survival Mantra: Geoff blindfolds himself and chants "I love spaghetti, spaghetti is good," as he eats the earthworms in slime sauce.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: The girls, mostly due to Heather's alliance with Lindsay and Gwen and Leshawna's hatred of her.
  • Tempting Fate: Bridgette openly doubts the claims that guys always remain tight friends and girls are always catty with each other. She then enters the cabin to see an escalating argument between Heather and Leshawna over petty reasons. Meanwhile, the guys are shown having a fun party.
  • This Is My Side: While fighting with Leshawna, Heather lays down a line of duct tape on the floor of the girls' cabin, with her and Lindsay's bunk beds on one side, and Gwen's and Leshawna's on the other.
Heather: This is my side, and that’s your side!
Leshawna: Yeah, that's right. You keep putting down that tape. And if you cross it, I’ll smack you down!
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: Owen enjoys the jellyfish/grasshopper/live anchovy pizza and even tries to grab a second slice.
  • Vomit Chain Reaction: Every single male character in the episode when the challenge finally ends.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Big time. First Trent vomits in the Confessional stall, to the point it leaks out of the window, and then it all gets grosser from there.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: The other guys (Duncan and Trent in particular) condemn Geoff for pep-talking Bridgette through the first round, thus ensuring the girls wins it.
  • You Are Fat: During a trash-talk argument, Leshawna insults Heather by calling her chest and butt flat. Heather's insults go in the opposite direction.
Heather: ...especially that. (points to Leshawna's bra) That is bugging me.
Leshawna: Yeah, it'd bug me too, if I didn't have anything in the front or the back to shake!
Heather: Yeah?! Well, you've got so much junk in your trunk, your jeans should come with a trash compactor!
