Tropes

  • Agonizing Stomach Wound: Ogden is shot in the stomach by a sniper when he tries to get help. Pilgrim tells the sheriff that he will be dead in three hours if he isn't brought to a hospital.
  • Anachronic Order: The scenes with Madani are all during the day until she shows up in Ohio. Frank's and Rachel's take place over the course of a full day and into the night, hence Madani has time to make it to Ohio in time to rescue Frank.
  • As the Good Book Says...: Pilgrim recites scripture as he chokes Marlena.
  • Bad Boss: For unexplained reasons (presumably You Have Failed Me) Pilgrim kills Marlena after busting her out of the holding cell. Later he kills the man that Frank gutshot.
  • Brick Joke: After claiming to have lost the five dollar bill Ogden gave her, Rachel gives it back to him as he's being taken away on an ambulance stretcher, in gratitude for having spoken against her and Castle being handed over to Pilgrim.
  • The Cavalry: Madani arrives at the nick of time with a DHS helicopter and reinforcements to save Frank's ass, just as Pilgrim is about to shoot him In the Back.
  • Changed My Mind, Kid: After Russo escapes, Madani has second thoughts about leaving Frank in the lurch and turns up to bring him back to New York.
  • Conveniently Timed Attack from Behind: The sniper is about to shoot the female cop when Frank gives him a Boom, Headshot!.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Once Frank leaves the precinct, he absolutely massacres all of Pilgrim's people. The watching police officers can only be Glad He's On Our Side.
  • The Dragon: Pilgrim is acting on behalf of the leader of his community.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Pilgrim has a family and a community he cherishes.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: By the end of the episode, Frank and Rachel have bonded with everyone in the sheriff's office.
  • Friend or Foe?: One mook shoots another, only to get shot by Castle who's actually coming up from the other direction.
  • The Fundamentalist: We see that Pilgrim is more extreme than the rest of his church. They are a conservative sect, but they still wear normal—albeit conservative—clothing. Pilgrim takes it up a notch by dressing like a Mennonite.
  • I Have Many Names: Turns out Rachel is just one of many aliases. Marlena too claims to have multiple passports she can use to flee the country.
  • In the Hood: In the jail, Frank dons a hippie baja pullover with a hood.
  • It's Personal: For Marlena with Frank; she wants to kill him personally at all cost. Pilgrim is having none of it, and kills her instead.
  • It Works Better with Bullets: When Marlena insists Only I Can Kill Him, Pilgrim hands her his pistol and invites her to show him the plan of attack, only to grab her in a chokehold. She tries to shoot him but the gun is empty.
  • I Was Never Here: Agent Madani says that Castle is needed for a Homeland Security case and so he was never there. The Sheriff offers to let Frank escape from her too in gratitude for saving their asses, but Frank leaves on the DHS helicopter taking Rachel with him as well.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: It's early days, but Frank and Rachel seem to have warmed up a bit towards each other by the end of the episode.
  • Kill It with Fire: Two of Pilgrim's men attempt to firebomb the Sheriff's office with a Molotov Cocktail, but Frank shoots it just before they throw it, dousing both of them in burning gasoline.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Ogden's brother points out that Frank and Marlena sound like they're married from the way they snark at each other. They share a You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me! look.
  • Moment of Weakness: While Frank makes quick work of Pilgrim's men, he is nearly killed by a lucky shot from Pilgrim sneaking up on him, only surviving because Madani showed up and threw off his aim.
  • Mook Horror Show: Frank brutally decimates Pilgrim's men, picking them apart one by one in the darkness.
  • Must Have Caffeine: Rachel says this when she asks Ogden for a coke.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Krista Dumont helps set Billy Russo free by not calling for help, hoping to convince him to give himself up instead.
  • Oh, Crap!: The Corrupt Cop Pilgrim uses to get the sheriff to hand over their prisoners gets this look when the Sheriff refuses, realising what's going to happen next.
  • Old Shame: In-Universe, Pilgrim's Nazi tattoos are seriously faded, indicating that he's had laser treatments to help remove them.
  • Pet the Dog: Russo uses Dr. Dumont to escape from the secure wing of the hospital but makes no effort to harm her, likely because he realises she was genuinely trying to help him.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: The Sheriff still doesn't know who Frank is or what's going on by the end of the episode, but he knows Frank saved a lot of lives standing up to bad guys.
Sheriff: You saved a lot of lives tonight. There's a scenario where you don't leave with her and you were still never here.
  • Red Shirt Army: Subverted with the Larkville Sheriff and his deputies who really seem present just to die; Dobbs in particular due to being so overweight he's unable to put on a bulletproof vest, but against odds they make it out, even the gutshot officer who is mentioned to have a wife and kid.
  • Shout-Out:
  • The Shrink: Dr. Dumont seems to fall into the well meaning but ineffectual variety.
  • The Siege: Pilgrim and his mercenaries attack the Larkville County Sheriff Station in an attempt to get Frank and "Rachel".
  • Tattooed Crook: Pilgrim has remnants of several tattoos resembling an Iron Cross, a Skull, and the image of a Reichsadler, indicating him to be a former Neo-Nazi.
  • Title Drop: A church choir sings a song at the beginning that includes the line "God's gonna trouble the water."
  • Traveling at the Speed of Plot: Madani travels all the way from New York to Ohio and picks up DHS backup, and it all takes the exact time necessary to save Frank's ass.
  • The Unreveal: Russo takes off his mask, but keeps his back to the camera so the audience doesn't see his scars yet.
  • You Have Failed Me: After getting broken out of the jail, Marlena asks for a new chance to kill Frank by herself. Pilgrim kills her, having had it with her failures and collateral damage.
