Episode 47 - Frozen - Tales of Philipe the Ice Skater

Marigold tells Chat Noir that she was originally meant to have the Ladybug Miraculous. He takes the news just fine; it makes sense, after all. However, Marigold isn't as enthused about this: while it's a huge lead on Scarlet Lady's identity, it's also a huge lead on her own, which makes her uncomfortable.

But Chat Noir dismissively declares that he's, like, 85% sure that he's figured that out already, much to Marigold's shock — she's only 75% certain about her theory of who he is! Gloatingly, Chat Noir declares that he's so certain that he's going to ask her civilian alter ego out tomorrow, stunning her further—"You think you know who I am and that makes you want to DATE ME?!"

Flexing, Chat Noir presses her: "You will say yes, right? Since you're in looooove-" Smacking and scolding him for his overconfidence, Marigold retorts that he'd better say yes when SHE asks HIM out!

As he prepares for school the following morning, Plagg asks Adrien just what his angle is here. Adrien replies that it should be obvious: Even if Marinette's not Marigold, he still gets to go out with her either way. Plagg wonders what happens if Marigold misses her guess, and Adrien idly declares that clearly that means she'll go out with some other guy... then stops dead in his tracks as the full implications of that hit him. Much like they've hit Marinette regarding what happens if her kitty misses his guess.

Fortunately, when they arrive at school, they immediately march towards each other and simultaneously ask each other out on a date. Their classmates cheer them on, though Chloé is visibly angry and jealous.

At the end of the day, the two agree to have their date after school next Friday and split off, happy that they finally have a date with each other... only for both to realize that this is their first date ever and that they have no idea what to do. They both then run to ask their classmates for ideas.

Adrien, unfortunately, keeps striking out as every one of the couples he asks (Alya and Nino, Ivan and Mylène, and Marc and Nathaniel) just mentions how they got together because of akumas, much to his chagrin. He then quickly rushes over to ask Juleka, who unfortunately can't say much on account of Rose being the one who did most of the wooing. To Adrien's relief, though, Luka is willing to give him a hand on it and offers to tag along to help take the pressure off of Adrien.

Meanwhile, Marinette runs into similar problems when Kim and Ondine remind her they got together after they were both akumatized. Marinette turns to beg Kagami for help, particularly after she learns Luka will be there as well. When Kagami agrees to go and support her, Ondine suggests Marinette take Adrien to the ice rink because it'll be a nice and quiet place for a first date. However, Kim misses the point and decides to take Ondine there as well before suggesting the same to all the other couples in their class, with the end result of Chloé learning about it by accident.

Next Friday, the mayor shows up, intending to close the ice rink and replace it with a gym for Chloé- ahem, for Paris: given how low attendance is, it isn't as if people will miss it. However, just then, the dating pairs arrive to the rink, ready to make use of it, so the mayor decides to give Philippe, the ice rink caretaker, one last chance: if Philippe manages to sign someone up for skating classes within ten minutes, he'll put the renovation on hold. However, Chloé isn't going to let that keep her from ruining the dates, so she puts on some skates and reveals a matching skating outfit underneath her coat.

Adrien asks Luka for some last-minute ideas, afraid about the possibility that Marinette may not see this as a date, but Luka encourages him. Meanwhile, Kagami states she's only there because she thought it'd be funny to watch everything. As they go into the rink, Alya wonders if Luka and Kagami are together, but they both shoot it down on account of Kagami being only into girls.

Kim and Ondine are the first on the rink—but this also means Kim is the first to slip and fall since he doesn't have as much experience in skating as Alix. Philippe asks if he's interested in lessons, but Kim rejects the offer.

Between Philippe harassing the students to sign up and Chloé just shoving people around, Nino notes he now understands why no one comes to the rink. However, Marinette and Adrien are still having fun as they try to skate, holding onto each other and talking, even as Luka and Kagami show off their skating skills. Philippe approaches the duo, who quickly shoot down Philippe's offers of lessons.

Even as Nino has fun faking being a bad skater to hold Alya tight, things aren't going as well for everyone else due to Chloé and Philippe. The latter, after failing to recruit either Rose or Juleka, finally notices Adrien Agreste is at the rink and quickly skates over to him, bowling Marinette over without any regards to her safety and injuring her. Seeing that Philippe failed to sign anyone up for lessons and instead got someone hurt in the process, the mayor scolds the rink manager for trying to force people to sign up and convinces Philippe to give up.

Adrien takes Marinette to the locker rooms to check on her injured leg and apologizes for the date, but Marinette doesn't mind— she's having fun with him, and that's all that matters. Chloé, meanwhile, attempts to further ruin the date by crashing the couple's moment alone in the locker room, but Philippe becomes akumatized before she can, which suits her just fine. Adrien splits off from Marinette in order to "go get help," and the three heroes give their Kwamis food with the ice magic power up.

Frozer immediately moves to cover a good part of Paris in ice. Marigold states they need to slow the akuma down with a trap, causing Chat Noir and Marigold to flirt once more, much to Scarlet Lady's confusion. As they try to skate away from Frozer, Chat Noir suggests Marigold to spring up her trap idea, calling her "Ma Princesse"—a nickname he's only ever used to address Marinette—in the process, much to Marigold's shock. Scarlet Lady, for once, has to keep the other two on task, informing them that she already summoned Lucky Charm while they were being weird.

Despite all this, Marigold's trap works, and Chat Noir manages to destroy the akumatized object—Frozer's skates—allowing Scarlet to fix everything. After the fight, Marigold asks Chat Noir why he called her princess. Scarlet interrupts that it's obvious—it's because she has a tiara.

In the end, Adrien saves the day by endorsing the rink and Philippe, making the mayor realize that trying to shut everything down will mean dealing with Adrien's rabid fangirls. Much to André's relief, Chloé doesn't care about it anymore—as far as she's concerned, the date was ruined, so there's no way Adrien and Marinette will try again after that disaster. However, she's quickly proven wrong when she sees them embracing each other.

Adrien tells Marinette that he really likes her, a sentiment Marinette happily reciprocates, particularly since she now knows for certain he's Chat Noir. Of course, things are slightly marred by the unwelcome presence of their friends, who are all too happy to keep peeping on the new couple...

This episode contains examples of:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Played for Laughs when Plagg asks Adrien, "So, what if Goldilocks is wrong about who you are?" which triggers belated realization from Adrien.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Adrien is not thrilled with the Date Peepers during the denouement:
Adrien: And do you all mind?!
    Rose: Nah.
Alya: [filming and offering them a thumbs-up] Keep going.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • When Chat Noir tells Marigold he's 85% certain of her identity, she reacts in shock—because she's only 75% certain of his identity.
    • When Chat Noir calls Marigold "Princesse", she asks why he called her that. Scarlet Lady states that it's obvious... it's because she's got a tiara. Both heroes, who thought she was about to deduce Marigold's identity, sigh in relief. Thank goodness Scar's an idiot...
  • Big Entrance: Both Marinette and Adrien walk into school shouting each other's names and yelling "PLEASE GO ON A DATE WITH ME!"... then cheerfully agreeing while their classmates scream for joy and Chloe fumes.
  • Big "NO!": Chloé belts one out upon seeing Marinette and Adrien share a hug after their not-so-ruined date.
  • Blush Stickers:
    • Marinette has these when Kagami agrees to accompany her on her first date.
    • Rose gets a pair while planning on inviting Juleka to the ice rink on Friday, blissfully unaware that she just accidentally informed Chloé of everyone's plans.
    • Ondine and Kim sport a matching set when they're the first ones out on the ice.
  • Brick Joke: Back during "Animan," both Nino and Marinette regarded the idea of spending time together at the zoo with Adrien and Alya as a "chill hangout" rather than a "date." Two seasons later, Marinette and Adrien panic over the fact that neither has ever been on what they considered to be a date before.
  • Brutal Honesty: Philippe is prone to this, such as telling Nathaniel and Marc that they look like they could use some lessons after the two fall on top of each other and dismissing Juleka and Rose as "normies" compared to Adrien Agreste.
  • Call-Back: Adrien and Marinette spend a good deal of time panicking over their date because neither of them have been on one before and their friends aren't really a good source for pointers sincevirtually all of them got together because of akumas:
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Chloé, of course. Not only does she try to ruin Adrien and Marinette's first date, she also tries to crash on them when they are alone.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Kim doesn't realize that Ondine suggested the ice rink as a place Marinette and Adrien (and Kagami and Luka) could have some privacy, proceeding to invite himself and his girlfriend along before extending an invitation to all their other friends.
    • When Philippe asks Kim if he's interested in skating lessons, Kim asks if Philippe can turn the rink into a pool.
    • Kim also doesn't understand why Nino keeps wiping out, not realizing that he's intentionally pretending to be worse at skating than he actually is in order to get closer to Alya.
    • Scarlet Lady doesn't seem to realize that Chat Noir and Marigold are flirting with each other, simply dismissing their behavior as them being weird.
    • Marigold asks Chat Noir why he just called her "Ma Princesse," a nickname he's only ever used for her civilian identity. Scarlet Lady interrupts by stating it's obvious—she's wearing a tiara!
    • When Adrien shouts at his date peeping classmates if they don't mind (clearly wanting them to give him and Marinette some privacy), Rose deliberately misses the point so she can keep watching. Alya likewise tells the couple to keep going as she films them.
  • Continuity Nod: When Marinette tells Adrien she always has fun with him, Adrien asks her if the time when they were chased all over Paris by his fans also counts.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Chloé intended to shut the ice rink down using her father's influence. However, she still arrives at the rink wearing an ice skater outfit under her long coat in case her original plan doesn't pan out.
  • Cut His Heart Out with a Spoon: As mentioned under Implied Death Threat, Kagami responds to Chloé trying to ruin every date at rink by threatening to use her own skates "more creatively."
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Deliberately Invoked by Nino, who pretends that he's not very good at skating so that Alya will laugh at his flailing about and let him lean on her for support.
Kim: Hey, 'nette? I thought Nino was good at skating.
    Marinette: [flatly] He is.
  • Date Peepers: Alya and Nino agree to go to the ice rink for a date just to peep on Adrien and Marinette's first date. Then, at the end of the episode, everyone just watches them confess to each other, even if they're being Moment Killers supreme.
  • The Determinator: Deconstructed. Philippe is desperate to find someone to sign up for skating lessons so his rink won't get shut down. However, his refusal to take no for an answer just ends up driving people away. It takes him accidentally injuring Marinette in his attempts to find a new student and the mayor scolding him for trying to force teens to sign up before he's finally willing to concede defeat, and he ends up getting akumatized over it.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Chat Noir brags to Marigold about his plans to ask her out in her civilian identity, goading her to declare she'll be asking out the person she suspects is HIM in response. He doesn't consider the potential consequences of either of them being wrong until Plagg points them out, though luckily, they both turn out to be correct.
    • Played With regarding Chloé's scheme. Her initial plan is simply to shut the rink down entirely, but when her father offers Philippe a chance to save his business, she reveals that she's already dressed to skate and proceeds to harass... everyone but Marinette and Adrien. However, her sheer satisfaction at how "an akuma ruined their date" implies that was her intent from the get-go... though she clearly doesn't consider that Adrien would still be able to recognize her blatant meddling for what it was.
  • Dressed in Layers: Chloé wears a puffy long coat to conceal the fact that she's wearing aa ice-skating costume, which she dramatically reveals as she prepares to sabotage every date at the rink. Philippe can't help questioning why she is wearing such a thing in the first place when she intended to shut his business down.
  • Easily Forgiven: Adrien holds no rancor towards Philippe despite how the rink manager had harassed his classmates and hurt Marinette, even endorsing the rink on his social network accounts.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While Philippe is desperate to sign someone up for his skating lessons, he backs off from Rose when she mentions she has health troubles. He also eventually concedes that he can't force the teens present to sign up for lessons when they've all made it clear they aren't interested.
  • Evil Is Petty: Much like in canon, Chloé tries to have the ice rink closed so that a gym can be built in its place. However, here, her actual intentions are much pettier: she's just doing it to ruin Adrien and Marinette's first date. Getting to ruin several other dates in the process is just a bonus.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!:
    • When Adrien casually informs Plagg that if Marigold hasn't figured out his Secret Identity, then she'll obviously ask some other guy out and date HIM instead, he promptly stops dead and repeats. "Oh. She'll go out with some other guy."
    • Marinette and Adrien separately congratulate themselves for finally getting a date with the other... only to freak out once they each realize this will be their first date ever (they don't count the "dates" they went on in "Evillustrator" and "Animan").
  • Flipping the Bird: Nathaniel does this when Philippe approaches him and Marc at the wrong time:
Philippe: [beaming down at the pair who have just fallen on top of each other after being shoved by Chloé] You two look like you could use some skate lessons!
Nathaniel: [flipping him off] I think you could use a lesson in tact.
  • Hidden Depths: Both Luka and Kagami are revealed to be very talented ice skaters. Not only that, but it's implied neither of them have received any formal training, with Kagami apparently having learned it just by watching the Martial Arts Skating Arc from Ranma ½.
  • Hope Spot: It appears as though Philippe may have finally found a new student when Mylène expresses interest in skating lessons, remarking that they sound fun. Then she sees Chloé zooming by with Luka and Kagami hot on the bully's tails and promptly changes her mind.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Chloé, who was planning on making her father close the ice rink due to low attendance, shows up there wearing an ice skater outfit. This might just be due to her being Crazy-Prepared, though.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Despite being interested in Marinette himself, Luka is willing to tag along on her date with Adrien to assist the latter.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Upon realizing that Adrien Agreste is currently visiting his rink, Philippe immediately wonders, "Why was I wasting my time on these normies when he was here?!" He's still standing next to Rose and Juleka, one of whom points out that they can still hear him.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Luka and Kagami shoot down Alya's attempt to suggest they should hook up by pointing out that he isn't her type.
    Alya: Huh? What's her type?
    Kagami: Girls.
  • Implied Death Threat: Kagami threatens to use her skates "more creatively" if Chloé doesn't stop harassing everyone else.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Philippe, the ice rink caretaker, is so desperate to find someone to sign up for skating lessons at his rink that he keeps acting insensitively towards the teens who are there.
  • Insult of Endearment: Marinette lovingly calls Adrien "dork" after having already called him that while they were in their superhero identities.
  • Irony: Scarlet Lady at one point is more focused on the fight against the akuma than Chat Noir and Marigold, the latter of whom is too busy blushing over being called "Ma Princesse" by Chat Noir, who typically only uses that nickname for Marinette. She even informs the Bee heroine that she already used Lucky Charm (unprompted) to get Marigold to snap out of it.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Though Mayor Bourgeois is only trying to shut down the rink because Chloé told him to, he's right that just because a bunch of teens happened to show up on this particular day, doesn't mean the rink is no longer suffering from chronic low attendance, which is vindicated when Philippe fails to get any of the teens to sign up for skating lessons. Then, after the rink manager's attempts to find a new student result in Marinette getting hurt, the mayor rightfully scolds him for trying to force the teens to sign up when they've all made it clear they aren't interested. Philippe reluctantly agrees.
  • Loony Fan: Adrien Exploits this in order to save the ice rink: he takes a selfie with Philippe and gushes on social media about how much fun he had hanging out with his friends there. Mayor André balks at the prospect of how the model's fanbase would react if he shuts the place down.
  • Moment Killer:
    • Marinette and Adrien hold hands and remark on the Contrived Coincidence of the two of them asking each other out on the same day... right before Philippe knocks the former down while approaching the latter.
    • Shortly afterwards, Philippe ruins yet another romantic moment between Marinette and Adrien in the locker rooms when he gets akumatized into Frozer. Even if he hadn't, Chloé would probably just have done it herself.
    • At the end of the episode, Marinette and Adrien try to confess to each other while their classmates watch.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Philippe is genuinely contrite upon seeing how he accidentally injured Marinette in his haste to approach Adrien.
  • Never My Fault: Downplayed when Chloé remarks to herself that an akuma ruined Adrien and Marinette's date without directly acknowledging that it was an akuma SHE caused.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Many of the couples among Adrien and Marinette's friends formed because the appearance of akumas either pushed them together or caused them to acknowledge their feelings for each other in some way.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Philippe's attempts to convince people to sign up for skating lessons repeatedly fall flat due to his poor timing, lack of tact, and refusal to take no for an answer. He approaches Kim, Marc, and Nathaniel immediately after they've wiped out and harasses the clearly nervous Juleka and Rose, pursuing them as they're trying to get away.
Nino: [to Alya, watching Philippe] I think I know why no one comes here.
  • Not So Above It All: Kagami admits she mostly came to the rink to have fun watching everyone skate (or try to). She also learned how to skate after watching anime (namely the Martial Arts Skating Arc from Ranma ½).
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Nino fakes being a newbie at skating so he can hold tightly to Alya.
  • Pair the Spares: Defied by Luka and Kagami. The latter makes clear that she's only interested in women.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Chloé invokes this once more, convincing her father that they should shut down the ice rink and replace it with a gym.
  • Shipper on Deck: The entire class (save for Chloé, obviously) cheer when Adrien and Marinette finally ask each other out on a date.
  • Shout-Out: According to Adrien, Kagami learned to ice skate by watching the Martial Arts Skating Arc in Ranma ½.
  • Spanner in the Works: All the couples at the rink have their dates ruined by Chloé because Rose unwittingly mentioned that Adrien and Marinette would be having their date at the ice rink while Chloé was around to overhear her. Moreover, Rose only learned about that because Kim decided to invite all the couples in the class to the rink after his girlfriend Ondine suggested that Adrien and Marinette have their first date there.
  • Speak in Unison: Adrien and Marinette ask each other out at exactly the same time and using exactly the same words.
  • Splash of Color: Lucky Charm objects and Kwami eyes aside, the ice power ups that the Kwamis eat are light blue in color.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Adrien and Marinette have the same realization about how things could go wrong if either of them is wrong about the other's identity. They also realize at the same time that they don't know what to do on a date and ask their friends for pointers.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Nathaniel and Marc both mentally remark that this date is their chance to look good in front of the other... right before Chloé shoves them both as she skates by, causing the couple to fall in a pile.
    • Adrien tries to reassure the self-conscious Marinette that none of their friends will judge them for being inexperienced skaters, noting that there are no professional athletes around... right as Luka casually hoists Kagami overhead and spins her around.
    • Chloé gloats to herself that there's no way Marinette and Adrien would be willing to give dating each other another shot after their date was ruined by an akuma, only to immediately spot the two embracing right outside her limo's window.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: After Mayor Bourgeois seemingly manages to get the rink shut down like Chloé wanted, the most she does in return is give him a half-hearted "U-huh, good job or whatever," too busy focusing on ruining Adrien and Marinette's moment alone in the locker rooms.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Kim deciding that he and Ondine should hit the ice rink on the same day as Marinette and Adrien leads to several other couples inviting themselves along... and Chloé overhearing their plans when Rose gushes to herself about the idea, enabling the bully to go on the offensive with her scheme to shut the whole place down.
  • Verbal Backspace: Mayor Bourgeois does this when he declares that he's turning the ice rink into a gym for "ma chére fille—uh, for Paris," underscoring how he's blatantly abusing his station again.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious: A variant. When planning out how to deal with Frozer, Chat Noir calls Marigold "Ma Princesse," which is the nickname he uses for Marinette.
